In order to investigate spin-charge coupling in multiferroic oxides, we measured the optical properties of BiFeO3. Although the direct 300 K charge gap is observed at 2.67 eV, absorption onset actually occurs at much lower energy with Fe3+ excitations at 1.41 and 1.90 eV. Temperature and magnetic-field-induced spectral changes reveal complex interactions between on-site crystal-field and magnetic excitations in the form of magnon sidebands. We employ the sensitivity of these magnon sidebands to map out the magnetic-fieldtemperature phase diagram which demonstrates optical evidence for spin spiral quenching above 20 T and suggests a spin domain reorientation near …

Temperature Dependence Of Radiation Induced Conductivity In Insulators, Jr Dennison, Jodie Corbridge Gillespie, Joshua Hodges, Ryan C. Hoffman, J Abott, Steven Hart, Alan W. Hunt

Journal Articles

We report on measurements of Radiation Induced Conductivity (RIC) of thin film Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) samples. RIC occurs when incident ionizing radiation deposits energy in a material and excites electrons into conduction states. RIC is calculated as the difference in sample conductivity under an incident flux and “dark current” conductivity under no incident radiation.

The primary focus of this study is the temperature dependence of the steady state RIC over a wide range of absorbed dose rates, from cryogenic temperatures to well above room temperature. The measured RIC values are compared to theoretical predictions of dose rate and temperature …

The discovery of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at the interface between insulating oxides has led to a well-deserved level of excitement due to possible applications as “in-plane” all-oxide nanoelectronics. Here we expand the range of possibilities to the realm of “out-of-plane” nanoelectronics by examining such all-oxide heterostructures as barriers in tunnel junctions.

High-Temperature Phase Transitions In Rbh2po4, Heber Jair Martinez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Recent studies have shown that the proton conductivity of MH2PO4 (M=Cs, Rb) solid-acids exhibits a sharp, several-order-of-magnitude increase upon heating above a certain temperature threshold [Boysen et al., Chem. Mater. 15, 727(2003), Boysen et al., Chem. Mater. 16, 693(2004)]. This so-called superprotonic behavior allows the above-mentioned compounds to function as fuel-cell electrolytes at intermediate temperatures [Boysen et al., Science 303, 68(2004)], a remarkable application that has attracted much interest. Yet, the crystal structures and microscopic mechanisms responsible for this heating-induced proton conductivity enhancement are not fully understood.

Our group has previously demonstrated [Botez et al., J. Chem. Phys. 127, 194701(2007)] …

X-Ray Diffraction Study Of Dysprosium Single Crystal Samples In A Diamond Anvil Cell (Dac), Ognjen Grubor-Urosevic

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

X-ray diffraction is the basis of crystallography, the study of the structure of crystals. It uses X-rays of a wavelength on the order of the size of atoms, so it can resolve the positions of individual atoms in a crystal. Illuminating the crystal with a well-collimated X-ray beam produces X-rays diffracted in a certain direction for a specific crystal orientation. By analyzing the relative phase of the incoming and outgoing scattered X-rays, the unique arrangements of atoms can be determined and the structure of the crystal can be solved.

There is a long standing controversy regarding the crystal structures and …

Ac Susceptibility And Heat Capacity Studies Of The Geometrically Frustrated Pyrochlores Terbium Titanium Tin Oxides And Holmium Titanates, Daniel Antonio

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Materials with a geometrically frustrated magnetic pyrochlore lattice have been of interest due to their unusual ground states. Tb 2 Ti 2 O 7 is known for having a spin liquid ground state which does not transition to a long-range ordered state down to at least 50 mK. Ho 2 Ti 2 O 7 has a macroscopically degenerate spin ice ground state which resembles that of the proton ordering in water ice. Heat Capacity measurements of Tb 2 Ti 2- x Sn x O 7 were done down to 0.36 K and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements of Ho 2- x …

Surface Relief Profile Of Photopolymerisable Systems In A Single Illuminated Spot, Tsvetanka Babeva, Dana Mackey, Izabela Naydenova, Suzanne Martin, Vincent Toal

Conference Papers

The formation of surface relief profile in photopolymerisable systems when illuminated with a focused beam of light is simulated numerically using a two-way diffusion model that accounts both for monomer and short polymer chains diffusion. The concentration and spatial distribution dynamics of monomer, short and long polymer chains are calculated. It is assumed that the surface profile is a linear combination of monomer and polymer concentration with appropriate coefficients accounting for polymer shrinkage. A good agreement between the calculated and the experimentally measured profiles is observed thus demonstrating the successful application of the two way diffusion in modeling this system.

Optical Properties Of Silica-Mfi Doped Acrylamide-Based Photopolymer, Tzvetanka Babeva, Rosen Todorov, Svetlana Mintova, Temenujka Yovcheva, Izabela Naydenova, Vincent Toal

Articles

The optical properties of acrylamide-based photopolymer doped with pure silica MFI-type zeolites are studied by refractometric and spectrophotometric means. Dynamic Light Scattering and Transmission Electron Microscopy are used for zeolite characterization and laser refractometry and White Light Interferometric profilometry are used for surface characterization of the composites. Refractive indices and absorption coefficients of composites are determined from their transmittance and reflectance spectra. The calculated dispersion curves are further used for deriving the zeolites refractive index and porosity and the latter compared to the values of total pore volume obtained from N2-sorption measurements. The impact of the doping level on the …

Absence Of Spin Liquid Behavior In Nd3ga5sio14 Using Magneto-Optical Spectroscopy, X. S. Xu, T. V. Brinzari, S. Mcgill, H. D. Zhou, C. R. Wiebe, J. L. Musfeldt

Xiaoshan Xu Papers

We measured the low-lying crystal field levels of Nd3+ in Nd3Ga5SiO14 via magneto-optical spectroscopy and employed the extracted energies, magnetic moments, and symmetries to analyze the magnetic properties and test the spin liquid candidacy of this material. The exchange interaction is surprisingly small, a discovery that places severe constraints on models used to describe the ground state of this system. Further, it demonstrates the value of local-probe photophysical techniques for rare-earthcontaining materials where bulk property measurements can be skewed by low-lying electronic structure.

Xiaoshan Xu Papers

The interplay between spin waves (magnons) and electronic structure in materials leads to the creation of additional bands associated with electronic energy levels which are called magnon sidebands. The large difference in the energy scales between magnons (meV) and electronic levels (eV) makes this direct interaction weak and hence makes magnon sidebands difficult to probe. Linear light absorption and scattering techniques at low temperatures are traditionally used to probe these sidebands. Here we show that optical secondharmonic generation, as the lowest-order nonlinear process, can successfully probe the magnon sidebands at room temperature and up to 723 K in bismuth ferrite, …

Pressure Induced Phase Transformation Of Sno2: An Ab Initio Constant Pressure Study, Daniel Tesfai Yehdego Jan 2009

Pressure Induced Phase Transformation Of Sno2: An Ab Initio Constant Pressure Study, Daniel Tesfai Yehdego

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The behavior of SnO2 under rapid hydrostatic pressures is studied using constant-pressure ab initio simulations. The rutile-type SnO2 gradually transforms into the CaCl2-type structure at 15 GPa. At a pressure of about 20 GPa, a phase transformation into a cubic fluorite-type structure is observed. The orthorhombic Pnma cotunnite-structured phase is observed above 150 GPa. The mechanisms of these phase transformations at the atomistic level are discussed.

Observed Superspin-Glass Behavior In Ni0.5zn0.5fe2o4 Nanoparticles, Antony Adair Jan 2009

Observed Superspin-Glass Behavior In Ni0.5zn0.5fe2o4 Nanoparticles, Antony Adair

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In this investigation we seek to identify the magnetic behavior of Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 nanoparticles though AC-susceptibility and DC-magnetization measurements. Powder x-ray diffraction was performed to determine the purity and average diameter ( ~ 9nm) of the particles. Aditionally, structure was confirmed by comparison through the International Centre for Diffraction Data's Powder Diffraction File [52] (PDF # 08-0234).

Zero-field cooled and field cooled DC magnetization measurements (bifurcation and blocking temperature), as well as M(H) hysteresis (below and above the blocking temperature) lead us to initially suggest that the material may in fact be superparamagnetic. However, further investigation of the real AC susceptibility …

Engineering Tool For Temperature, Electric Field And Dose Rate Dependence Of High Resistivity Spacecraft Materials, Jr Dennison, Steven Hart, Jodie Corbridge Gillespie, Justin Dekany, Charles Sim, Dan Arnfield

Conference Proceedings

An engineering tool has been developed to predict the equilibrium resistivity of common spacecraft insulating materials as a function of electric field (Ε), temperature (T), and adsorbed dose rate (Ď) based on parameterized, analytic functions used to model an extensive data set taken by the Utah State University Materials Physics Group. The ranges of E, T and Ď measured in the experiments were designed to cover as much of the ranges typically encountered in space environments as possible: (i) the typical electric field range was from 104 V-m-1 to 107 V-m-1 or from <0.1% up to between 30% to 90%of the electrostatic breakdown field strength; (ii) temperature was measured and modeled over a typical range of 150 K to 330 K (within limits noted below); and the adsorbed dose rate was measured and modeled over a range of 10-5 Gray …

Prediction Of Electrically Induced Magnetic Reconstruction At The Manganite/Ferroelectric Interface, John D. Burton, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal

Evgeny Tsymbal Publications

The control of magnetization via the application of an electric field, known as magnetoelectric coupling, is among the most fascinating and active research areas today. In addition to fundamental scientific interest, magnetoelectric effects may lead to new device concepts for data storage and processing. There are several known mechanisms for magnetoelectric coupling that include intrinsic effects in single-phase materials, strain-induced coupling in two-phase composites, and electronically driven effects at interfaces. Here we explore a different type of magnetoelectric effect at a ferromagnetic-ferroelectric interface: magnetic reconstruction induced by switching of electric polarization.

Prediction Of A Switchable Two-Dimensional Electron Gas At Ferroelectric Oxide Interfaces, Manish K. Niranjan, Yong Wang, Sitaram S. Jaswal, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal

Evgeny Tsymbal Publications

The demonstration of a quasi-two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in LaAlO3=SrTiO3 heterostructures has stimulated intense research activity in recent years. The 2DEG has unique properties that are promising for applications in all-oxide electronic devices. For such applications it is desirable to have the ability to control 2DEG properties by external stimulus. Here, based on first-principles calculations we predict that all-oxide heterostructures incorporating ferroelectric constituents, such as KNbO3=ATiO3 (A = Sr, Ba, Pb), allow creating a 2DEG switchable between two conduction states by ferroelectric polarization reversal. The effect occurs due to the screening charge at …

Comment On "On The Theory Of Nuclear Resonant Forward Scattering Of Synchrotron Radiation", Gilbert R. Hoy, Jos Odeurs

Physics Faculty Publications

Recently, in a paper by Kohn and Smirnov, a formula previously derived by Kagan et al. was developed to explain the forward scattering of gamma radiation by a nuclear-resonant sample excited by pulsed synchrotron radiation. Their derivation followed, directly, a procedure developed by Heitler, Harris, and Hoy. Previously, a completely different formula was developed by Hoy et al. to explain the same process. As a result, Kohn and Smirnov discuss the correctness and validity of the two models. In this Comment a detailed numerical comparison of the two theories has also been made. It is shown that their comparison is …

Static High Pressure Ft-Ir Spectroscopic Studies Of Tatb, Brian F. Yulga

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Static high-pressure experiments utilizing diamond anvil cells (DACs) provide an alternative method to shockwave studies for extracting precise information on the physical and chemical properties of energetic materials. Due to mechanical restraints (e.g. small sample sizes and apertures), synchrotron radiation sources are ideal for probing the structure of materials at the molecular level. 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB) is an insensitive (tertiary) high explosive (iHE) useful in military applications. Compared to other conventional iHEs, it is a safer and more stable energetic material. Its unique properties cause it to be of interest in the energetic materials research community. The Functionalization Of Carbon Nanosheets, Ronald A. Quinlan

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Carbon nanosheets are a novel two-dimensional nanostructure made up of 2-20 graphene atomic planes oriented with their in-plane axis perpendicular to the growth substrate. Previous efforts in developing nanosheet technology have focused on the characterization of the system and their development as an electron source due to the high atomic enhancement factor (beta) and low turn on field. Further investigation of nanosheets as high surface area electrodes revealed poor wetting by polymeric material and extreme hydrophobic behavior.;Because nanosheet technology has promise as a high surface area electrode material, this thesis research has focused on three areas of interest: the enhancement …

Holographic recording in thick photopolymer layers is important for application in holographic data storage, volume holographic filters and correlators. Here, the characteristics of acrylamidebased photopolymer layers having thickness from 250 μm to 1-mm were studied. For each layer thickness samples with three different values of absorbance were studied. By measuring both the first order diffraction efficiency growth of holographically recorded gratings and studying the diffraction patterns obtained, the influence of scattering on the diffraction efficiency of thick volume holographic gratings was analyzed. It was observed that above a particular thickness and absorbance, the first order diffraction efficiency significantly decreased because …

Sensing applications of holograms may be based on effects such as change in the spacing of the recorded fringes in a holographic diffraction grating in the presence of an analyte so that the direction of the diffracted laser light changes, or, in the case of a white light reflection grating, the wavelength of the diffracted light changes. An example is a reflection grating which swells in the presence of atmospheric moisture to indicate relative humidity by a change is the colour of the diffracted light. These devices make use of the photopolymer’s ability to absorb moisture. In a more versatile …
