Analytical And Numerical Analysis Of The Sirs Model, Catherine Nguyen
Analytical And Numerical Analysis Of The Sirs Model, Catherine Nguyen
Student Research Submissions
Mathematical models in epidemiology describe how diseases affect and spread within a population. By understanding the trends of a disease, more effective public health policies can be made. In this paper, the Susceptible-Infected-Recovered-Susceptible (SIRS) Model was examined analytically and numerically to compare with the data for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). Since the SIRS model is a complex model, analytical techniques were used to solve simplified versions of the SIRS model in order to understand general trends that occur. Then by Euler's Method, the Runge-Kutta Method, and the Predictor-Corrector Method, computational approximations were obtained to solve and plot the SIRS model. …

Proof-Of-Concept For Converging Beam Small Animal Irradiator, Benjamin Insley
Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)
The Monte Carlo particle simulator TOPAS, the multiphysics solver COMSOL., and
several analytical radiation transport methods were employed to perform an in-depth proof-ofconcept
for a high dose rate, high precision converging beam small animal irradiation platform.
In the first aim of this work, a novel carbon nanotube-based compact X-ray tube optimized for
high output and high directionality was designed and characterized. In the second aim, an
optimization algorithm was developed to customize a collimator geometry for this unique Xray
source to simultaneously maximize the irradiator’s intensity and precision. Then, a full
converging beam irradiator apparatus was fit with a multitude …

Modeling An Infection Outbreak With Quarantine: The Sibkr Model, Mikenna Dew, Amanda Langosch, Theadora Baker-Wallerstein
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
Influenza is a respiratory infection that places a substantial burden in the world population each year. In this project, we study and interpret a data set from a flu outbreak in a British boarding school in 1978 with mathematical modeling. First, we propose a generalization of the SIR model based on the quarantine measure in place and establish the long-time behavior of the model. By analyzing the model mathematically, we determine the analytic formulas of the basic reproduction number, the long-time limit of solutions, and the maximum number of infection population. Moreover, we estimate the parameters of the model based …

Fitting A Covid-19 Model Incorporating Senses Of Safety And Caution To Local Data From Spartanburg County, South Carolina, D. Chloe Griffin, Amanda Mangum
CODEE Journal
Common mechanistic models include Susceptible-Infected-Removed (SIR) and Susceptible-Exposed-Infected-Removed (SEIR) models. These models in their basic forms have generally failed to capture the nature of the COVID-19 pandemic's multiple waves and do not take into account public policies such as social distancing, mask mandates, and the ``Stay-at-Home'' orders implemented in early 2020. While the Susceptible-Vaccinated-Infected-Recovered-Deceased (SVIRD) model only adds two more compartments to the SIR model, the inclusion of time-dependent parameters allows for the model to better capture the first two waves of the COVID-19 pandemic when surveillance testing was common practice for a large portion of the population. We find …

Multiscale Modelling Of Brain Networks And The Analysis Of Dynamic Processes In Neurodegenerative Disorders, Hina Shaheen
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The complex nature of the human brain, with its intricate organic structure and multiscale spatio-temporal characteristics ranging from synapses to the entire brain, presents a major obstacle in brain modelling. Capturing this complexity poses a significant challenge for researchers. The complex interplay of coupled multiphysics and biochemical activities within this intricate system shapes the brain's capacity, functioning within a structure-function relationship that necessitates a specific mathematical framework. Advanced mathematical modelling approaches that incorporate the coupling of brain networks and the analysis of dynamic processes are essential for advancing therapeutic strategies aimed at treating neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs), which afflict millions of …

A Novel Scheme Based On Bessel Operational Matrices For Solving A Class Of Nonlinear Systems Of Differential Equations, Atallah El-Shenawy, Mohamed El-Gamel, Muhammad E. Anany
Mansoura Engineering Journal
The system of ordinary differential equations arises in many natural phenomena, especially in the field of disease spread. In this paper, a perfect spectral technique is introduced to solve systems of nonlinear differential equations. The technique enhanced the Bessel collocation technique by converting the series notation of unknown variables and their derivatives to matrix relations. The Newton algorithm is developed to solve the resulting nonlinear system of algebraic equations. The effectiveness of the scheme is proved by the convergence analysis and error bound as demonstrated in Theorem 1. The scheme of solution is tested to clarify the efficiency and the …

Reducing Food Scarcity: The Benefits Of Urban Farming, S.A. Claudell, Emilio Mejia
Journal of Nonprofit Innovation
Urban farming can enhance the lives of communities and help reduce food scarcity. This paper presents a conceptual prototype of an efficient urban farming community that can be scaled for a single apartment building or an entire community across all global geoeconomics regions, including densely populated cities and rural, developing towns and communities. When deployed in coordination with smart crop choices, local farm support, and efficient transportation then the result isn’t just sustainability, but also increasing fresh produce accessibility, optimizing nutritional value, eliminating the use of ‘forever chemicals’, reducing transportation costs, and fostering global environmental benefits.

Game-Theoretic Approaches To Optimal Resource Allocation And Defense Strategies In Herbaceous Plants, Molly R. Creagar
Game-Theoretic Approaches To Optimal Resource Allocation And Defense Strategies In Herbaceous Plants, Molly R. Creagar
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Empirical evidence suggests that the attractiveness of a plant to herbivores can be affected by the investment in defense by neighboring plants, as well as investment in defense by the focal plant. Thus, allocation to defense may not only be influenced by the frequency and intensity of herbivory but also by defense strategies employed by other plants in the environment. We incorporate a neighborhood defense effect by applying spatial evolutionary game theory to optimal resource allocation in plants where cooperators are plants investing in defense and defectors are plants that do not. We use a stochastic dynamic programming model, along …

Controlled Manipulation And Transport By Microswimmers In Stokes Flows, Jake Buzhardt
All Dissertations
Remotely actuated microscale swimming robots have the potential to revolutionize many aspects of biomedicine. However, for the longterm goals of this field of research to be achievable, it is necessary to develop modelling, simulation, and control strategies which effectively and efficiently account for not only the motion of individual swimmers, but also the complex interactions of such swimmers with their environment including other nearby swimmers, boundaries, other cargo and passive particles, and the fluid medium itself. The aim of this thesis is to study these problems in simulation from the perspective of controls and dynamical systems, with a particular focus …

Computational Study Of Twin Circular Particles Settling In Fluid Using A Fictitious Boundary Approach, Imran Abbas, Kamran Usman
Computational Study Of Twin Circular Particles Settling In Fluid Using A Fictitious Boundary Approach, Imran Abbas, Kamran Usman
International Journal of Emerging Multidisciplinaries: Mathematics
The objective of this study is to examine the performance of two adjacent solid particles as they settle in close nearness, with a focus on comprehending the intricate interactions between the particles and the surrounding fluid during the process of sediment transport. Simulations are conducted with different initial horizontal spacing between particles and Reynolds numbers (Re). The findings of the simulations highlight the impact of the initial spacing between particles and Reynolds numbers (Re) as key factors influencing the ultimate settling velocity and separation distance. In general, when the initial spacing between particles is small and the Reynolds number (Re) …
Rigid Body Constrained Motion Optimization And Control On Lie Groups And Their Tangent Bundles, Brennan S. Mccann
Rigid Body Constrained Motion Optimization And Control On Lie Groups And Their Tangent Bundles, Brennan S. Mccann
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Rigid body motion requires formulations where rotational and translational motion are accounted for appropriately. Two Lie groups, the special orthogonal group SO(3) and the space of quaternions H, are commonly used to represent attitude. When considering rigid body pose, that is spacecraft position and attitude, the special Euclidean group SE(3) and the space of dual quaternions DH are frequently utilized. All these groups are Lie groups and Riemannian manifolds, and these identifications have profound implications for dynamics and controls. The trajectory optimization and optimal control problem on Riemannian manifolds presents significant opportunities for theoretical development. Riemannian optimization is an attractive …
An Implementation Of The Method Of Moments On Chemical Systems With Constant And Time-Dependent Rates, Emmanuel O. Adara, Roger B. Sidje
An Implementation Of The Method Of Moments On Chemical Systems With Constant And Time-Dependent Rates, Emmanuel O. Adara, Roger B. Sidje
Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)
Among numerical techniques used to facilitate the analysis of biochemical reactions, we can use the method of moments to directly approximate statistics such as the mean numbers of molecules. The method is computationally viable in time and memory, compared to solving the chemical master equation (CME) which is notoriously expensive. In this study, we apply the method of moments to a chemical system with a constant rate representing a vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) model, as well as another system with time-dependent propensities representing the susceptible, infected, and recovered (SIR) model with periodic contact rate. We assess the accuracy of …
Dynamical Aspects In (4+1)-Body Problems, Ryan Gauthier
Dynamical Aspects In (4+1)-Body Problems, Ryan Gauthier
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The n-body problem models a system of n-point masses that attract each other via some binary interaction. The (n + 1)-body problem assumes that one of the masses is located at the origin of the coordinate system. For example, an (n+1)-body problem is an ideal model for Saturn, seen as the central mass, and one of its outer rings. A relative equilibrium (RE) is a special solution of the (n+1)-body problem where the non-central bodies rotate rigidly about the centre of mass. In rotating coordinates, these solutions become equilibria.
In this thesis we study dynamical aspects of planar (4 + …

(Si10-056) Fear Effect In A Three Species Prey-Predator Food-Web System With Harvesting, R. P. Gupta, Dinesh K. Yadav
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
Some recent studies and field experiments show that predators affect their prey not only by direct capture; they also induce fear in prey species, which reduces their reproduction rate. Considering this fact, we propose a mathematical model to study the fear effect of a middle predator on its prey in a three-species food web system with harvesting. The ecological feasibility of solutions to the proposed system is guaranteed in terms of positivity and boundedness. The local stability of stationary points in the proposed system is derived. Multiple co-existing stationary points for the proposed system are observed, which makes the problem …

Homotopy Analysis Method For Fourth-Order Time Fractional Diffusion-Wave Equation, Naveed Imran, Raja Mehmood Khan
International Journal of Emerging Multidisciplinaries: Mathematics
This paper is devoted to the study of a fourth-order fractional diffusion-wave equation defined in a bounded space domain. We apply Homotopy Analysis Method (HAM) to obtain solutions of fourth-order fractional diffusion-wave equation defined in a bounded space domain. It is observed that the HAM improves the accuracy and enlarge the convergence domain.

Theory And Computations For The System Of Integral Equations Via The Use Of Optimal Auxiliary Function Method, Laiq Zada, Falak Naz, Rashid Nawaz
International Journal of Emerging Multidisciplinaries: Mathematics
This paper extends the application of Optimal Auxiliary Function Method (OAFM) to the system of integral equations. The system of Volterra integral equations of second kind are taken as test examples. The results obtained by proposed method are compared with different methods i.e., Biorthogonal systems in a Banach space Fixed point, the implicit Trapezoidal rule in conjunction with Newton's method, and Relaxed Monte Carlo method (RMCM). The results revealed that OAFM is more efficient, simple to apply, and fast convergent. The auxiliary functions used in the method control its convergence. The values of arbitrary constants involved in the auxiliary functions …

(R1511) Numerical Solution Of Differential Difference Equations Having Boundary Layers At Both The Ends, Raghvendra Pratap Singh, Y. N. Reddy
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, numerical solution of differential-difference equation having boundary layers at both ends is discussed. Using Taylor’s series, the given second order differential-difference equation is replaced by an asymptotically equivalent first order differential equation and solved by suitable choice of integrating factor and finite differences. The numerical results for several test examples are presented to demonstrate the applicability of the method.
Numerical Analysis Of A Model For The Growth Of Microorganisms, Alexander Craig Montgomery, Braden J. Carlson
Numerical Analysis Of A Model For The Growth Of Microorganisms, Alexander Craig Montgomery, Braden J. Carlson
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
A system of first-order differential equations that arises in a model for the growth of microorganisms in a chemostat with Monod kinetics is studied. A new, semi-implicit numerical scheme is proposed to approximate solutions to the system. It is shown that the scheme is uniquely solvable and unconditionally stable, and further properties of the scheme are analyzed. The convergence rate of the numerical solution to the true solution of the system is given, and it is shown convergence of the numerical solutions to the true solutions is uniform over any interval [0, T ] for T > 0.
