A Comparison Of The Utility Of Craniometric And Dental Morphological Data For Assessing Biodistance And Sex-Differential Migration In The Pacific Islands, Brittney A. Eubank
A Comparison Of The Utility Of Craniometric And Dental Morphological Data For Assessing Biodistance And Sex-Differential Migration In The Pacific Islands, Brittney A. Eubank
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Genetic analysis of maternally-inherited mitochondrial DNA and the paternally-inherited Y-chromosome yield contrasting pictures of movement of peoples into the Pacific Islands. A possible explanation for this discrepancy is a matrilocal residency pattern practiced by early Pacific settlers, in which Melanesian men were brought into settler communities to intermarry with local women, yielding a higher intrapopulation variance and lower interpopulation variance exhibited in males compared to females. This research investigates the possibility of sex-differential migration in the Oceanic populations of Easter Island, Fiji, Guam, Mokapu, and New Britain through analysis of biodistance based on dental morphological trait frequencies and craniometric measures …
Human Shields And Redistribution Of Prey Species Complicate The Utility Of Protected Areas As Ecological Baselines, Wesley Sarmento
Human Shields And Redistribution Of Prey Species Complicate The Utility Of Protected Areas As Ecological Baselines, Wesley Sarmento
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
A key goal of protected areas is the conservation of biodiversity, an aim that garners increasing public support through positive experiences. Increasing visitation, however, can come at the cost of reduced ecological integrity. A fundamental conundrum is that if parks are to serve as our most pristine places, then we must understand how our presence alters species interactions. Species redistributing closer to people is of growing management concern both in and out of national parks because of 1) human safety, 2) animal health, and 3) ecological consequences. Across parks drivers of distributional change are often dissimilar, and include movement to …
It’S Rooted In The Land: How Managing Natural Resources Leads Native American Tribes To Sovereignty, Nicky Ouellet
It’S Rooted In The Land: How Managing Natural Resources Leads Native American Tribes To Sovereignty, Nicky Ouellet
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Tribal management of land and natural resources within the boundaries of Native American reservations is often superseded by state and federal policy. But control of land and resources is, ultimately, what makes a nation a nation. The three stories in this portfolio depict tribes establishing control of natural resources to various degrees of success. Chapter one is a narrative outlining the stories, my reportage and plans for publication. Chapter two: Members of the Northern Cheyenne seek to establish a medical marijuana program after the federal government relaxed enforcement of cannabis bans. Chapter three: An activist on the Fort Berthold reservation …

A Tool-Free Calibration Method For Turntable-Based 3d Scanning Systems, Xufang Pang, Rynson W.H. Lau, Zhan Song, Shengfeng He, Shengfeng He
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Turntable-based 3D scanners are popular but require calibration of the turntable axis. Existing methods for turntable calibration typically make use of specially designed tools, such as a chessboard or criterion sphere, which users must manually install and dismount. In this article, the authors propose an automatic method to calibrate the turntable axis without any calibration tools. Given a scan sequence of the input object, they first recover the initial rotation axis from an automatic registration step. Then they apply an iterative procedure to obtain the optimized turntable axis. This iterative procedure alternates between two steps: refining the initial pose of …

Ionic And Electronic Conductivities Of Atomic Layer Deposition Thin Film Coated Lithium Ion Battery Cathode Particles, Rajankumar L. Patel, Jonghyun Park, Xinhua Liang
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
It is imperative to ascertain the ionic and electronic components of the total conductivity of an electrochemically active material. A blocking technique, called the “Hebb-Wagner method”, is normally used to explain the two components (ionic and electronic) of a mixed conductor, in combination with the complex ac impedance method and dc polarization measurements. CeO2 atomic layer deposition (ALD)-coated and uncoated, LiMn2O4 (LMO) and LiMn1.5Ni0.5O4 (LMNO) powders were pressed into pellets and then painted with silver to act as a blocking electrode. The electronic conductivities were derived from the currents obtained using …
Gallai-Ramsey Number Of An 8-Cycle, Jonathan Gregory
Gallai-Ramsey Number Of An 8-Cycle, Jonathan Gregory
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Given a graph G and a positive integer k, define the Gallai-Ramsey number to be the minimum number of vertices n such that any k-edge-coloring of Kn contains either a rainbow (all different colored) triangle or a monochromatic copy of G. In this work, we establish the Gallai-Ramsey number of an 8-cycle for all positive integers.
Almost Perfect Restriction Semigroups, Peter R. Jones
Almost Perfect Restriction Semigroups, Peter R. Jones
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
We call a restriction semigroup almost perfect if it is proper and the least congruence that identifies all its projections is perfect. We show that any such semigroup is isomorphic to a ‘W -product’ W(T,Y)W(T,Y), where T is a monoid, Y is a semilattice and there is a homomorphism from T into the inverse semigroup TIYTIY of isomorphisms between ideals of Y. Conversely, all such W-products are almost perfect. Since we also show that every restriction semigroup has an easily computed cover of this type, the combination yields a ‘McAlister-type’ theorem for all restriction semigroups. …

The cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) incidence has been increasing in an exponential manner in certain populations around the world for over 7 decades. To help illuminate the etiology, we performed worldwide temporal (1955–2007) CMM incidence analysis by sex, age (0–14, 15–29, 30–49, 50–69, 70–85+), and skin type on 6 continents using data from the International Agency for Research on Cancer. We observe an exponential increase in the CMM incidence over time and an increase of about 2 orders of magnitude between age groups 0–14 and 15–29 exclusively in European-ancestry populations around the world independent of skin type (I–III or III–IV). …

Accurate symptom of cancer patient in regular basis is highly concern to the medical service provider for clinical decision making such as adjustment of medication. Since patients have limitations to provide self-reported symptoms, we have investigated how mobile phone application can play the vital role to help the patients in this case. We have used facial images captured by smart phone to detect pain level accurately. In this pain detection process, existing algorithms and infrastructure are used for cancer patients to make cost low and user-friendly. The pain management solution is the first mobile-based study as far as we found …

Solving Set Cover With Pairs Problem Using Quantum Annealing, Yudong Cao, Shuxian Jiang, Debbie Perouli, Sabre Kais
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
Here we consider using quantum annealing to solve Set Cover with Pairs (SCP), an NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem that plays an important role in networking, computational biology, and biochemistry. We show an explicit construction of Ising Hamiltonians whose ground states encode the solution of SCP instances. We numerically simulate the time-dependent Schrödinger equation in order to test the performance of quantum annealing for random instances and compare with that of simulated annealing. We also discuss explicit embedding strategies for realizing our Hamiltonian construction on the D-wave type restricted Ising Hamiltonian based on Chimera graphs. Our embedding on the Chimera graph …

A Generalized Gamma-Weibull Distribution: Model, Properties And Applications, R. S. Meshkat, H. Torabi, Gholamhossein G. Hamedani
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
We prepare a new method to generate family of distributions. Then, a family of univariate distributions generated by the Gamma random variable is defined. The generalized gamma-Weibull (GGW) distribution is studied as a special case of this family. Certain mathematical properties of moments are provided. To estimate the model parameters, the maximum likelihood estimators and the asymptotic distribution of the estimators are discussed. Certain characterizations of GGW distribution are presented. Finally, the usefulness of the new distribution, as well as its effectiveness in comparison with other distributions, are shown via an application of a real data set.

This paper introduces a new generalization of the transmuted Marshall-Olkin Fréchet distribution of Afify et al. (2015), using Kumaraswamy generalized family. The new model is referred to as Kumaraswamy transmuted Marshall-Olkin Fréchet distribution. This model contains sixty two sub-models as special cases such as the Kumaraswamy transmuted Fréchet, Kumaraswamy transmuted Marshall-Olkin, generalized inverse Weibull and Kumaraswamy Gumbel type II distributions, among others. Various mathematical properties of the proposed distribution including closed forms for ordinary and incomplete moments, quantile and generating functions and Rényi and η-entropies are derived. The unknown parameters of the new distribution are estimated using the maximum …

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
A new generalization of the Weibull-Pareto distribution called the transmuted Weibull-Pareto distribution is proposed and studied. Various mathematical properties of this distribution including ordinary and incomplete moments, quantile and generating functions, Bonferroni and Lorenz curves and order statistics are derived. The method of maximum likelihood is used for estimating the model parameters. The flexibility of the new lifetime model is illustrated by means of an application to a real data set.

Issues associated with information security are numerous and diverse. Since the majority of organizational actions rely greatly on information and communication technologies, Information Systems (IS) security is now a main concern for firms, governments, institutes, and society as a whole. As a result, a plethora of graduate programs have been created, covering nearly every aspect of IS security. The authors review the current state of the IS industry presented in the literature, and identify a panel of IS experts in which to explore current job skill needs using a “Developing a Curriculum,” DACUM, process to support curriculum design for two …

Nonlinear Model And Qualitative Analysis For Coupled Axial/Torsional Vibrations Of Drill String, Fushen Ren, Baojin Wang, Suli Chen, Zhigang Yao, Baojun Bai
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A nonlinear dynamics model and qualitative analysis are presented to study the key effective factors for coupled axial/torsional vibrations of a drill string, which is described as a simplified, equivalent, flexible shell under axial rotation. Here, after dimensionless processing, the mathematical models are obtained accounting for the coupling of axial and torsional vibrations using the nonlinear dynamics qualitative method, in which excitation loads and boundary conditions of the drill string are simplified to a rotating, flexible shell. The analysis of dynamics responses is performed by means of the Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg method, in which the rules that govern the changing of the …

Up-Converted Emissions Of Er3+ Doped Gd2(Wo4)3 Phosphors, Grayson L. Wiggins
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this work, the up-conversion (UC) emissions of Er3+ in a gadolinium tungstate host was investigated to analyze the possible processes of up-conversion by 1500 nm and 980 nm excitation. Studies were conducted to see how the 4S3/2 -> 4I15/2 transition changed with varying current through the excitation source, varying excitation wavelength, and doping concentration. Power dependent studies revealed that under 1500 nm excitation the 4S3/2 -> 4I15/2 transition needed 3 photons, while 980 nm excitation could do the same transition with 2 photons. It was found that 1500 nm could produce more efficient red emission due to the 4I9/2 …

Garch(1,1) With Sifted Gamma-Distributed Errors, Alan C. Budd
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Typical General Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedastic (GARCH) processes involve normally-distributed errors, and they model strictly-positive error processes poorly. This thesis will present a method for estimating the parameters of a GARCH(1,1) process with shifted Gamma-distributed errors, conduct a simulation study to test the method, and apply the method to real time series data.
Gorenstein Projective (Pre)Covers, Michael J. Fox
Gorenstein Projective (Pre)Covers, Michael J. Fox
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The existence of the Gorenstein projective precovers is one of the main open problems in Gorenstein Homological algebra. We give sufficient conditions in order for the class of Gorenstein projective complexes to be special precovering in the category of complexes of R-modules Ch(R). More precisely, we prove that if every complex in Ch(R) has a special Gorenstein flat cover, every Gorenstein projective complex is Gorenstein flat, and every Gorenstein flat complex has finite Goenstein projective dimension, then the class of Gorenstein projective complexes, GP(C), is special precovering in Ch(R).
Combinatorial Optimization Of Subsequence Patterns In Words, Matthew R. Just
Combinatorial Optimization Of Subsequence Patterns In Words, Matthew R. Just
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Packing patterns in words concerns finding a word with the maximum number of a prescribed pattern. The majority of the work done thus far is on packing patterns into permutations. In 2002, Albert, Atkinson, Handley, Holton and Stromquist showed that there always exists a layered permutation containing the maximum number of a layered pattern among all permutations of length n. Consequently, the packing density for all but two (up to equivalence) permutation patterns up to length 4 can be obtained. In this thesis we consider the analogous question for colored patterns and permutations. By introducing the concept of colored blocks …
Missing Data In Clinical Trial: A Critical Look At The Proportionality Of Mnar And Mar Assumptions For Multiple Imputation, Theophile B. Dipita
Missing Data In Clinical Trial: A Critical Look At The Proportionality Of Mnar And Mar Assumptions For Multiple Imputation, Theophile B. Dipita
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Randomized control trial is a gold standard of research studies. Randomization helps reduce bias and infer causality. One constraint of these studies is that it depends on participants to obtain the desired data. Whatever the researcher can do, there is a possibility to end up with incomplete data. The problem is more relevant in clinical trials when missing data can be related to the condition under study. The benefits of randomization is compromised by missing data. Multiple imputation is a valid method of treating missing data under the assumption of MAR. Unfortunately this is an unverified assumptions. Current practice advise …

Carinata Fame Production Process And Biofuel Oxidation, Benoit Kindo
Honors College Theses
In this experiment, the contribution of a standard production method for biofuels on their oxidative stability was investigated. Peroxide values were measured at different steps of the production process of Brassica carinata and peanut-based biofuels. The washing and drying steps in this production method showed significant increases in peroxide values for both biofuels and was identified as a major contributor of biofuel oxidation. Further analyses of the physical and thermal properties showed a more pronounced affect in the biofuel from Bassica carinata, and indicated an unusual composition much higher in saturated fatty acids much longer than those found in peanut. …

Triple differential cross sections (TDCSs) for the electron impact ionization of the unresolved combination of the 4 highest occupied molecular orbitals (4b3g, 5b2u, 1b1g, and 2b3u) of para-benzoquinone are reported. These were obtained in an asymmetric coplanar geometry with the scattered electron being observed at the angles −7.5°, −10.0°, −12.5° and −15.0°. The experimental cross sections are compared to theoretical calculations performed at the molecular 3-body distorted wave level, with a marginal level of agreement between them being found. The character of the ionized orbitals, through calculated momentum profiles, provides some qualitative …
Estimating Freeway Travel Times Using The General Motors Model, Shu Yang, Yaojan Wu, Zhaozheng Yin, Yiheng Feng
Estimating Freeway Travel Times Using The General Motors Model, Shu Yang, Yaojan Wu, Zhaozheng Yin, Yiheng Feng
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Travel time is a key transportation performance measure because of its diverse applications. Various modeling approaches to estimating freeway travel time have been well developed due to widespread installation of intelligent transportation system sensors. However, estimating accurate travel time using existing freeway travel time models is still challenging under congested conditions. Therefore, this study aimed to develop an innovative freeway travel time estimation model based on the General Motors (GM) car-following model. Since the GM model is usually used in a microsimulation environment, the concepts of virtual leading and virtual following vehicles are proposed to allow the GM model to …
The Synthesis And Characterization Of Ni(Ii) And Cu(Ii) Cyanoximates, Adedamola Abraham Opalade
The Synthesis And Characterization Of Ni(Ii) And Cu(Ii) Cyanoximates, Adedamola Abraham Opalade
MSU Graduate Theses
The design of one-dimensional nickel wires were attempted. Metal complexes of hydrated Cu(II) and Ni(II) with several cyanoximates were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, thermal analysis, IR-, electronic- (solid state diffuse reflectance) spectroscopy, and the X-ray analysis (powder diffraction and single crystal studies). Hydrolysis of the HECO and HMeCO cyanoxime ligands leads to the formation of another dianionic cyanoxime – AACO2-, which forms multimetallic Cu(II) and Ni(II) complexes and oxamide as a side product. The crystal and molecular structures of 8 compounds were determined (6 metal complexes and 2 organic compounds). Two Ni metal complexes have distorted octahedral structures …
