The primary mechanism for overcoming faults in modern storage systems is to introduce redundancy in the form of replication and error correcting codes. The costs of such redundancy in hardware, system availability and overall complexity can be substantial, depending on the number and pattern of faults that are handled. This dissertation describes and analyzes, via simulation, a system that seeks to use disk failure avoidance to reduce the need for costly redundancy by using adaptive heuristics that anticipate such failures. This dissertation focuses of three different subjects. The first is the synthesis and characterization of heptacoordinate amidinate compounds. Heptacoordinate compounds are not common, but their structures have been studied. Group 4 amidinate compounds have been used as precursors in the CVD/ ALD processes. Ancillary ligands, such as amidinates, have been used to reduce air-sensitivity of complexes. Reactions of these complexes with water have been used to make metal oxide thin films.

Recent advancements in experimental and theoretical nuclear physics have yielded new data and models that more accurately describe the decay of fission products compared to historical data currently used for many applications. This work examines the effect of the adopting the Effective Density Model theory for beta-delayed neutron emission probability on calculations of delayed-neutron production and fission product nuclide concentrations after fission bursts as well as the total delayed neutron fraction in comparison with the Keepin 6-group model. A general approach to the many-body problem is density functional theory (DFT) and its time-dependent extension (TDDFT), which provide a realistic representation of the material-dependent symmetry and chemistry of a compound. This study developed the Statistics Assessment of Graduate Students (SAGS) instrument, and established its preliminary item characteristics, reliability, and validity evidence. Even though there are limited number of assessments available for measuring different aspects of statistical cognition, these previously available assessments have numerous limitations. The SAGS instrument was developed using Rasch modeling approach to create a new measure of statistical research methodology knowledge of graduate students in education and other behavioral and social sciences. Bulk lipids such as phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylserine (PS), and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) represent the major components of cellular membranes. In addition, unilamellar vesicles composed of lipids (liposomes) are valuable for delivery applications since they can encapsulate and transport drugs and other agents. The north Himalayan gneiss domes are a series of isolated structures in southern-central Tibet that expose middle crust and record an early history of deformation, metamorphism, and partial melting. The domes are windows into the processes and physical conditions that promoted growth and uplift of the Himalaya during the early stage of collision (Eocene to Miocene) between India and Asia. Molecular bottlebrushes are composed of polymer side chains densely grafted to a macromolecular backbone. The main focus of this dissertation work is the synthesis and behavior of linear molecular brushes that can undergo unimolecular size and shape changes in response to environmental stimuli in dilute aqueous solution. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to molecular bottlebrushes and stimuli-responsive polymers.

Ancient fluvial features on Mars evidence past episodes of hydrologic activity and paleoclimate conditions suitable for liquid water. The Aeolis Dorsa region preserves the most numerous and diverse assemblage of fluvial features yet observed on Mars and many of these features have experienced a history of burial, exhumation, and topographic inversion. This dissertation describes analyses of visual images and topography of Mars and complementary analyses of fluvial analogs on Earth. These analyses provide information about the styles of fluvial activity, magnitudes of paleodischarge, changes in slope, and inferences about Martian paleoclimate conditions. A cornerstone of ecology and evolution is comparing and explaining the complexity of natural systems, be they genomes, phenotypes, communities, or entire ecosystems. These comparisons and explanations then beget questions about how complexity should be quantified in theory and estimated in practice. Here I embrace diversity partitioning using Hill or effective numbers to move the empirical side of the field regarding the quantification of biological complexity.

Conductivity of an individual proteinaceous filaments, called pili or microbial nanowires, produced by wild type Geobacter sulfurreducens was measured using a low-noise electrical transport technique. It was shown that the conductivity is diminished if aromatic amino acid residues are removed from the pili. It was demonstrated that the conductivity of G. sulfurreducens pili is similar to that of synthetic organic polymers and is related to the respiration rate of the bacteria. We think of DNA as double-stranded helices (duplex), but the polymer exists in many conformations. Several triplex and quadruplex DNA structures can be formed in laboratory settings and exist in nature. This thesis first provides a brief description of the nature of the order in arrays of duplex DNA under biologically relevant molecular crowding conditions. Then we compare the duplex DNA mesophases with the corresponding liquid crystalline phase behavior of the triplex and quadruplex DNA analogues. In particular, we focus on G-quadruplexes. To date, the efficiency of these devices has been low in part because of the challenge of optimizing molecular packing while also obtaining a bicontinuous structure with a characteristic length comparable to the exciton diffusion length of 10 to 20 nm. At first, we study the 2-dimensional PT-symmetric square lattices (of the discrete non-linear Schr¨odinger (dNLS) type) and identify the existence, stability and dynamical evolu- tion of stationary states, including discrete solitons and vortex configurations. In this thesis, I extend tropicalization of subvarieties of algebraic tori over a trivially valued algebraically closed field to subvarieties of spherical homogeneous spaces. I show the existence of tropical compactifications in a general setting. Given a tropical compactification of a closed subvariety of a spherical homogeneous space, I show that the support of the colored fan of the ambient spherical variety agrees with the tropicalization of the closed subvariety. I provide examples of tropicalization of subvarieties of GL(n), SL(n), and PGL(n).

We conjecture a relationship between the Hilbert schemes of points on a singular plane curve and the Kauffman invariant of the link associated to the singularity. Specifcally, we conjecture that the generating function of certain weighted Euler characteristics of the Hilbert schemes is given by a normalized specialization of the difference between the Kauffman and HOMFLY polynomials of the link. We prove the conjecture for torus knots. We also develop some skein theory for computing the Kauffman polynomial of links associated to singular points on plane curves.
