Hyperspectral Image Analysis Of Food For Nutritional Intake, Shirin Nasr Esfahani

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The primary object of this dissertation is to investigate the application of hyperspectral technology to accommodate for the growing demand in the automatic dietary assessment applications. Food intake is one of the main factors that contribute to human health. In other words, it is necessary to get information about the amount of nutrition and vitamins that a human body requires through a daily diet. Manual dietary assessments are time-consuming and are also not precise enough, especially when the information is used for the care and treatment of hospitalized patients. Moreover, the data must be analyzed by nutritional experts. Therefore, researchers …

Reachability And Turn Constraint Paths, Sabrina Wallace Aug 2022

Reachability And Turn Constraint Paths, Sabrina Wallace

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Problems dealing with the development of efficient algorithms for constructing collision-free paths have been explored extensively. We review existing algorithms for constructing collision-free paths under turn-angle constraints. We examine the problem of computing collision-free paths in the presence of polygonal obstacles. We present an algorithm for identifying the placement of a source vertex so that the maximum number of obstacle vertices can be reached via the shortest path tree under turn-angle requirements. We also present some experimental results on the construction of collision-free paths in the presence of polygonal obstacles.

Bidirectional Testing For Repairable Systems Reliability: Power Asymmetries, Panel Of Control Charts, And Reliability Graphics, Sung Keun Koo Aug 2022

Bidirectional Testing For Repairable Systems Reliability: Power Asymmetries, Panel Of Control Charts, And Reliability Graphics, Sung Keun Koo

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

To a practitioner who chooses to be on the safe side, we offer an option between a cocktail of tests and a solo one-size-fits-all test as a needed antidote to power asymmetries. Two bidirectional tests are first established to empower a basic pair of tests as asymmetrical performances. Unsurprisingly, we’ve seen either bidirectional device championing in one alternative setting, but also being turned against the very setting altered with just one of the composed elements. Progressing by filtering out the bad and enhancing the good, we assemble a hybrid from the empowered pair to restore power symmetries that are thought …

Physics Of Electromagnetic Counterparts Of Binary-Neutron-Star Mergers, Shunke Ai May 2022

Physics Of Electromagnetic Counterparts Of Binary-Neutron-Star Mergers, Shunke Ai

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Binary neutron star (BNS) mergers are supposed to be the sources of a variety of astrophysical transients, including both gravitational wave (GW) and electromagnetic (EM) signals. The types and properties of the post-merger central product contain crucial information for many unsolved physical problems. Since the current GW detectors are not sensitive enough in kHz, only GWs from the inspiral phase can be detected, so that one cannot directly study the central products from GWs. EM signals can serve as probes to infer the type and properties of the central product. When a long-lived neutron star (NS) is formed after the …

Terrestrial Planet Formation In M-Dwarf And Binary Star Systems, Anna C. Childs May 2022

Terrestrial Planet Formation In M-Dwarf And Binary Star Systems, Anna C. Childs

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

I examine circumbinary terrestrial planet formation in a gas free environment around various binary systems and terrestrial planet formation in a gaseous environment around M-dwarfs. While terrestrial cirumbinary planets have yet to be observed, this is likely due to observational bias. Motivated by recent observations of highly misaligned circumbinary gas disks, I perform a suite of n-body studies to understand the properties of terrestrial planets around various binary systems. In a polar alignment, a circumbinary disk is inclined by 90 degrees relative to the binary orbital plane. I find that terrestrial planet formation in a polar configuration may be as …

Upon examining the subtypes of land use that generate or radiate more crime, property crime concentrated on transportation land use, class 1 resorts, and …

The Effects Of Winds On Accretion Disks And Spectra Of X-Ray Binaries And Active Galactic Nuclei, Shalini Ganguly May 2022

The Effects Of Winds On Accretion Disks And Spectra Of X-Ray Binaries And Active Galactic Nuclei, Shalini Ganguly

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and X-ray binaries (XRBs) contain at their cores supermassive black holes (SMBH), and stellar mass black holes or neutron stars, respectively. These objects bind matter gravitationally, leading to the formation of accretion disks. The accretion of matter leads to efficient conversion of gravitational potential energy into radiation. When the force and/or energy imparted by this radiation on matter exceeds the attractive force due to the local gravitational field, it leads to the launching of matter in the form of outflows or winds. These outflows produce blueshifted (and occasionally redshifted) emission or absorption components in the spectra …

A Survey Of The Br´Ezis-Nirenberg Problem And Related Theorems, Edward Huynh May 2022

A Survey Of The Br´Ezis-Nirenberg Problem And Related Theorems, Edward Huynh

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations on bounded domains arise in several different areas of mathematics that include geometry, mathematical physics, and the calculus of variations. The Br ́ezis-Nirenberg problem is concerned with a boundary-value problem that is intimately connected to the existence of positive solutions of the Yamabe problem, of non-minimal solutions to Yang-Mills functionals, and of extremal functions to several important inequalities. Results on existence and uniqueness have been obtained in cases when the exponent is sub-critical, but such results have not been obtained when the exponent is critical due to a lack of compactness. The earliest results obtained …

Positive Solutions To Semilinear Elliptic Equations With Logistic-Type Nonlinearities And Harvesting In Exterior Domains, Eric Jameson May 2022

Positive Solutions To Semilinear Elliptic Equations With Logistic-Type Nonlinearities And Harvesting In Exterior Domains, Eric Jameson

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Existing results provide the existence of positive solutions to a class of semilinear elliptic PDEs with logistic-type nonlinearities and harvesting terms both in RN and in bounded domains U ⊂ RN with N ≥ 3, when the carrying capacity of the environment is not constant. We consider these same equations in the exterior domain Ω, defined as the complement of the closed unit ball in RN , N ≥ 3, now with a Dirichlet boundary condition. We first show that the existing techniques forsolving these equations in the whole space RN can be applied to the exterior domain with some …

Effects Of Distributed Energy Resources On The Bulk Electric System, Stryder Loveday May 2022

Effects Of Distributed Energy Resources On The Bulk Electric System, Stryder Loveday

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The traditional power grid was designed with a centralized resource distribution in mind, with a relatively small number of large power generation facilities supplying the vast majority of load. With recent efforts to further diversify the power grid as well as an increased interest in renewable energy sources, there has been an unprecedented amount of new DistributedEnergy Resources (DERs) added to the grid within the last decade. This often heavily influences the local demand where these resources are installed, often causing power to flow in ways not anticipated by the original design of the grid. This thesis reviews the potential …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The importance of proving the viability of interstellar transport and addressing its potential hazards and pitfalls is immense. If we do not look toward the future and examine what could be waiting for us, we are doing our children, our children’s children, and so on, a disservice. Here we must attempt to lay the groundwork for our future scientists, engineers, and adventurers. Asking and answering questions like, which propulsion and energy systems must we incorporate to send us through the cosmos? Will we utilize technologies known today, such as fossil fuel rockets, fission or fusion rockets, and antimatter drives (pion …

Towards Highly Sensitive Capacitance Measurements Of A Quantum Anomalous Hall Phase In Van Der Waal Heterostructures, Kayla Cerminara May 2022

Towards Highly Sensitive Capacitance Measurements Of A Quantum Anomalous Hall Phase In Van Der Waal Heterostructures, Kayla Cerminara

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

One of the pioneering achievements in condensed matter physics of the 20th century is the observation of the quantum Hall e↵ect (QHE) in which the Hall resistance in a two-dimensional (2D) sample takes on quantized values in the presence of a strong perpendicular magnetic field. The precise quantization of the hall resistance to one part in a billion has provided a practical, worldwide resistance standard. A long-standing goal has been to realize a similar state of matter but without the need of a strong quantizing magnetic field. The quantum anomalous Hall e↵ect (QAHE) is such a state that is predicted …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In this dissertation we will be examining partial differential equations on graphs. We start by presenting some basic graph theory topics and graph Laplacians with some minor original results. We move on to computing original Jost graph Laplacians of friendly labelings of various finite graphs. We then continue on to a host of original variational problems on a finite graph. The first variational problem is an original basic minimization problem. Next, we use the Lagrange multiplier approach to the Kazdan-Warner equation on a finite graph, our original results generalize those of Dr. Grigor’yan, Dr. Yang, and Dr. Lin. Then we …

From Language Comprehension Towards General Ai, Binay Dahal Dec 2021

From Language Comprehension Towards General Ai, Binay Dahal

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Language comprehension or more formally, natural language understanding is one of the major undertakings in Artificial Intelligence. In this work, we explore a few of the problems in language understanding using fixed deep learning models. Specifically, first, we look into question generation. Asking questions relates to the cognitive ability of language comprehension and context understanding. For that reason, making progress in question generation is significant. We introduce a novel task called “question generation with masked target answer” and propose various models and present the baseline result for the task. Next, we extend on the question generation task and develop a …

In the field of Computer Science, neural networks and genetic algorithms have become very popular tools in solving complex problems. Because of this growing popularity, there has been several attempts to combine the two concepts. Some of these attempts focused on using genetic algorithms to determine the best architecture, starting weights, or feature selection, to name of few of the applications. While a lot of the research that is available focuses on solving more than one element of the neural network design or is looking to use genetic algorithms to replace a part of the traditional neural network, such as …

A Human-Embodied Drone For Dexterous Aerial Manipulation, Dongbin Kim Dec 2021

A Human-Embodied Drone For Dexterous Aerial Manipulation, Dongbin Kim

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Current drones perform a wide variety of tasks in surveillance, photography, agriculture, package delivery, etc. However, these tasks are performed passively without the use of human interaction. Aerial manipulation shifts this paradigm and implements drones with robotic arms that allow interaction with the environment rather than simply sensing it. For example, in construction, aerial manipulation in conjunction with human interaction could allow operators to perform several tasks, such as hosing decks, drill into surfaces, and sealing cracks via a drone. This integration with drones will henceforth be known as dexterous aerial manipulation.

Our recent work integrated the worker’s experience into …

Exploring The Latent Space Of Image Captioning Networks, Mikian J. Musser Dec 2021

Exploring The Latent Space Of Image Captioning Networks, Mikian J. Musser

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

State-of-the-art image captioning models can successfully produce a diverse set of accurate captions. Previous research has focused on improving caption diversity while maintaining a high level of fidelity. We shift the focus from accuracy and diversity to controllability. We use a modified version of the traditional encoder-decoder network that allows the model to produce a meaningful and structured latent space. We then explore the latent space using several latent cartographic methods: lerp, slerp, analogy completion, attribute vector rotation, and interpolation graphs. Additionally, we discuss different categories of latent space and provide modifications for each of the cartographic methods. Finally, we …

Ab-Initio And Empirical Simulations Of Aluminum And Copper Metal, William Wolfs Dec 2021

Ab-Initio And Empirical Simulations Of Aluminum And Copper Metal, William Wolfs

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In this work, I perform detailed calculations on the bulk and electronic properties of aluminum and copper metal. Originally, I was motivated by experimental work on the solidsolid phase changes in pure aluminum. These phase changes were well predicted by density functional theory(DFT) but difficult or impossible to predict using embedded atom method potentials(EAM). EAM potentials are in wide use to describe many properties of bulk materials, and it seemed worrying that something so basic as a phase change could not be predicted. I began running high precision calculations with DFT and compared the results to EAM potentials which had …

Machine Learning Analysis Of Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (Snp) Data To Predict Bone Mineral Density In African American Women, Erick Githua Wakayu

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Osteoporosis is a debilitating disease in which an individual’s bones weaken, making bones fragile and more susceptible to fracture. While commonly found amongst postmenopausal Caucasian and Asian women based on previous studies, those of African descent (African American/Black) have largely been ignored when it comes to osteoporotic studies, especially when it comes to Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS). From GWA studies, we gain access to single nucleotide poly-morphisms (SNPs) that may contribute to certain illnesses, such as osteoporosis. With low Bone Mineral Density (BMD) being one of the primary markers of potential osteoporosis, it is prudent that proper research is …

Hybridity, Ecocriticism, And Feminist Perspectives In She-Ra And The Princesses Of Power, Sarah Warso Dec 2021

Hybridity, Ecocriticism, And Feminist Perspectives In She-Ra And The Princesses Of Power, Sarah Warso

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Children’s cartoons are growing increasingly nuanced in the twenty-first century. She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (2018) is an animated television series targeted towards young girls that includes themes of ecocriticism and feminism. The show does this by introducing cyborg, or hybrid, characters. My research explores how cyborg identities in children’s media and their feminist, ecocritical meanings in She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. The cyborg, as a feminist mythic hero, breaks down binaries and recodes communication between opposing forces. The She-Ra is filled with characters that inhabit multiple identities. The main character, Adora, identifies as both a former Evil …
