From Language Comprehension Towards General Ai, Binay Dahal Dec 2021

From Language Comprehension Towards General Ai, Binay Dahal

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Language comprehension or more formally, natural language understanding is one of the major undertakings in Artificial Intelligence. In this work, we explore a few of the problems in language understanding using fixed deep learning models. Specifically, first, we look into question generation. Asking questions relates to the cognitive ability of language comprehension and context understanding. For that reason, making progress in question generation is significant. We introduce a novel task called “question generation with masked target answer” and propose various models and present the baseline result for the task. Next, we extend on the question generation task and develop a …

Calculating The Learning Rate Of A Neural Network Using A Genetic Algorithm, Eric Miller Dec 2021

Calculating The Learning Rate Of A Neural Network Using A Genetic Algorithm, Eric Miller

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In the field of Computer Science, neural networks and genetic algorithms have become very popular tools in solving complex problems. Because of this growing popularity, there has been several attempts to combine the two concepts. Some of these attempts focused on using genetic algorithms to determine the best architecture, starting weights, or feature selection, to name of few of the applications. While a lot of the research that is available focuses on solving more than one element of the neural network design or is looking to use genetic algorithms to replace a part of the traditional neural network, such as …

A Human-Embodied Drone For Dexterous Aerial Manipulation, Dongbin Kim Dec 2021

A Human-Embodied Drone For Dexterous Aerial Manipulation, Dongbin Kim

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Current drones perform a wide variety of tasks in surveillance, photography, agriculture, package delivery, etc. However, these tasks are performed passively without the use of human interaction. Aerial manipulation shifts this paradigm and implements drones with robotic arms that allow interaction with the environment rather than simply sensing it. For example, in construction, aerial manipulation in conjunction with human interaction could allow operators to perform several tasks, such as hosing decks, drill into surfaces, and sealing cracks via a drone. This integration with drones will henceforth be known as dexterous aerial manipulation.

Our recent work integrated the worker’s experience into …

Exploring The Latent Space Of Image Captioning Networks, Mikian J. Musser Dec 2021

Exploring The Latent Space Of Image Captioning Networks, Mikian J. Musser

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

State-of-the-art image captioning models can successfully produce a diverse set of accurate captions. Previous research has focused on improving caption diversity while maintaining a high level of fidelity. We shift the focus from accuracy and diversity to controllability. We use a modified version of the traditional encoder-decoder network that allows the model to produce a meaningful and structured latent space. We then explore the latent space using several latent cartographic methods: lerp, slerp, analogy completion, attribute vector rotation, and interpolation graphs. Additionally, we discuss different categories of latent space and provide modifications for each of the cartographic methods. Finally, we …

Ab-Initio And Empirical Simulations Of Aluminum And Copper Metal, William Wolfs Dec 2021

Ab-Initio And Empirical Simulations Of Aluminum And Copper Metal, William Wolfs

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In this work, I perform detailed calculations on the bulk and electronic properties of aluminum and copper metal. Originally, I was motivated by experimental work on the solidsolid phase changes in pure aluminum. These phase changes were well predicted by density functional theory(DFT) but difficult or impossible to predict using embedded atom method potentials(EAM). EAM potentials are in wide use to describe many properties of bulk materials, and it seemed worrying that something so basic as a phase change could not be predicted. I began running high precision calculations with DFT and compared the results to EAM potentials which had …

Machine Learning Analysis Of Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (Snp) Data To Predict Bone Mineral Density In African American Women, Erick Githua Wakayu Dec 2021

Machine Learning Analysis Of Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (Snp) Data To Predict Bone Mineral Density In African American Women, Erick Githua Wakayu

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Osteoporosis is a debilitating disease in which an individual’s bones weaken, making bones fragile and more susceptible to fracture. While commonly found amongst postmenopausal Caucasian and Asian women based on previous studies, those of African descent (African American/Black) have largely been ignored when it comes to osteoporotic studies, especially when it comes to Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS). From GWA studies, we gain access to single nucleotide poly-morphisms (SNPs) that may contribute to certain illnesses, such as osteoporosis. With low Bone Mineral Density (BMD) being one of the primary markers of potential osteoporosis, it is prudent that proper research is …

Hybridity, Ecocriticism, And Feminist Perspectives In She-Ra And The Princesses Of Power, Sarah Warso

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Children’s cartoons are growing increasingly nuanced in the twenty-first century. She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (2018) is an animated television series targeted towards young girls that includes themes of ecocriticism and feminism. The show does this by introducing cyborg, or hybrid, characters. My research explores how cyborg identities in children’s media and their feminist, ecocritical meanings in She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. The cyborg, as a feminist mythic hero, breaks down binaries and recodes communication between opposing forces. The She-Ra is filled with characters that inhabit multiple identities. The main character, Adora, identifies as both a former Evil …

What Do General And Organic Chemistry Students Consider When Making Decisions About Acids And Bases? A Phenomenographic Study, Sarah Wood

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Chemistry students often struggle in organic chemistry courses. In fact, these courses are viewed by some as “weed-out” classes. There are many fundamental concepts covered in general chemistry that contribute to students’ ability to succeed in organic chemistry. One of those fundamental topics, and the focus of this study, is the topic of acids and bases. Acid–base topics are featured in both general and organic chemistry courses, and the interests of this study lie not only within the realm of organic chemistry but also general chemistry.

The purpose of this study was to determine both undergraduate general and organic chemistry …

In the second part, we look into the modeling application for the filtration/backwash process at the River Mountains Water Treatment Facility in Henderson, NV.

In the first two chapters, we introduce the Time Relaxation models and their associated differential filter equations. In addition, we develop the regularization method which employs the Nth van Cittert deconvolution operator, which gives rise to the family of models. …

Hyperpolarizability Dispersion Measured For Carbon Disulfide Vapor, Rodrigo N. Fernandez Aug 2021

Hyperpolarizability Dispersion Measured For Carbon Disulfide Vapor, Rodrigo N. Fernandez

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The second hyperpolarizability (γ) of carbon disulfide (CS2) was measured by gas phase electric-field-induced second harmonic generation (ESHG), for laser wavelengths in the range of 765-1064 nm. The observed hyperpolarizability is decomposed into electronic (γ^e) and vibrational (γ^v) contributions, and the dispersion curve for γ^eis extrapolated to the static limit, with the result γ^e_0 = 12558 ± 93 atomic units. The results of this experiment agree with other recent nonlinear optical measurements and theoretical calculations.

A 155-Year Tree-Ring Based Record Of Warm And Dry Snow Droughts For The Cascade Range, Usa, Laura A. Dye

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Contributing 50-80% to the surface water for the region, mountain snowpack is a pillar of the hydrologic cycle in the western US, and is projected to decrease to 44% by 2100 in the Cascade Mountains alone. The western US has recently been identified as a global snow drought hot spot, exhibiting more frequent, intensified, and lengthened snow drought events in recent decades. Only recently has the need to understand the types of snow droughts and their driving mechanisms become critical to understand and quantify. Recent research suggests ‘warm’ snow droughts caused by winter precipitation falling as rain rather than snow …

Rotten With Prediction, Serena Raquel Hicks Aug 2021

Rotten With Prediction, Serena Raquel Hicks

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This project focuses on the relationship between religion and technology as it is portrayed in Science Fiction (SF). This thesis explores the SF genre rhetorically by examining the 2002 movie Minority Report (MR), which signaled the importance of surveillance and the need to predict future crimes following 9/11. The events of 9/11 played a significant role in post 9/11 SF films, which reflect and critique our communal and cultural values. 9/11 created a new relationship between the U.S justice system, predictive technologies (PTs), and data gathering. Through the Bush Doctrine of “preemptive action,” the U.S government attempted to use Dataism, …

Tail-Measurable Functions And Their Corresponding Induced Classes, And Some Determinacy Conditions Involving 3-Player Games, Joshua K. Reagan Aug 2021

Tail-Measurable Functions And Their Corresponding Induced Classes, And Some Determinacy Conditions Involving 3-Player Games, Joshua K. Reagan

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In this dissertation, we have two main categories of results. The first is regarding certain point-classes, and the second is regarding 3-player games.

The point-classes of Baire Space, \mathcal{N}, in the Borel and Projective Hierarchies, as well as Hausdorff's Difference Hierarchy have been well studied, and there has been much research into further stratifying these hierarchies. One area of particular interest falls in between the point-classes \mathbf{\Pi}_\mathbf{1}^\mathbf{1} and \Delta\left(\omega^2-\mathbf{\Pi}_\mathbf{1}^\mathbf{1}\right). It is well known that the point-classes \beta-\mathbf{\Pi}_\mathbf{1}^\mathbf{1}, for \beta\in\omega^2, stratify this region of the projective hierarchy, with the point-class \bigcup_{\beta\in\omega^2}\beta-\mathbf{\Pi}_\mathbf{1}^\mathbf{1} still falling strictly below \Delta\left(\omega^2-\mathbf{\Pi}_\mathbf{1}^\mathbf{1}\right). Dr. Derrick DuBose developed multiple …

Forecasting Pedestrian Trajectory Using Deep Learning, Arsal Syed Aug 2021

Forecasting Pedestrian Trajectory Using Deep Learning, Arsal Syed

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In this dissertation we develop different methods for forecasting pedestrian trajectories. Complete understanding of pedestrian motion is essential for autonomous agents and social robots to make realistic and safe decisions. Current trajectory prediction methods rely on incorporating historic motion, scene features and social interaction to model pedestrian behaviors. Our focus is to accurately understand scene semantics to better forecast trajectories. In order to do so, we leverage semantic segmentation to encode static scene features such as walkable paths, entry/exits, static obstacles etc. We further evaluate the effectiveness of using semantic maps on different datasets and compare its performance with already …

The proliferation of renewable distributed energy resources, particularly photovoltaic (PV) power systems, and the increasing need for a reliable power supply has led to the concept of microgrids, a mini-grid that consists of locally connected power generation units and needs, able to operate connected or disconnected from the utility grid, using controlled and coordinated methods to provide for the users of the microgrid the best possible conditions for their needs. The main technical issues facing microgrids include some of the following, seamless transition from stand-alone to utility grid connected operation, how to preserve frequency and voltage stability, and provide the …

Petrogenesis Of Hawaiian Lavas: Investigations Using Radiogenic And Non-Traditional Stable Isotopes, Christopher Defelice May 2021

Petrogenesis Of Hawaiian Lavas: Investigations Using Radiogenic And Non-Traditional Stable Isotopes, Christopher Defelice

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Earth’s mantle is the most voluminous part of the planet and is inaccessible to direct investigations. It is only possible to study it through indirect methods, such as the chemical makeup of erupted lavas. The Hawaiian Islands are thought to be the product of the mantle plume hypothesis, sometimes called a hot spot. Material from the Earth’s mantle is brought to the surface and erupted as magnesium rich lavas and form basalts. Hawaii is the longest lived active hot spot on Earth and makes it an ideal candidate for understanding the evolution of the Earth’s mantle and how lavas cool …

Orbital Dynamics And Stability Of Circumbinary Planetary Systems And Small Bodies In The Solar System, Cheng Chen May 2021

Orbital Dynamics And Stability Of Circumbinary Planetary Systems And Small Bodies In The Solar System, Cheng Chen

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

My main research focuses on the dynamics and stability of circumbinary planetary systems and of small bodies in the solar system. Unlike the two-body problem, the three-body problem is more complex as there are stronger interactions with two massive bodies in the system. In the outer solar system, the apsidal precession secular resonance with Neptune makes comets in the Kuiper belt unstable in the early stages of the solar system. This resonance a likely origin for the nitrogen-delivering comets that impacted the Earth bringing some of the nitrogen in the Earth’s atmosphere today. Beyond the solar system, we have observed …

Comparing A New Algorithm For The Traveling Salesman Problem To Previous Deterministic And Stochastic Algorithms, Edward Friesema May 2021

Comparing A New Algorithm For The Traveling Salesman Problem To Previous Deterministic And Stochastic Algorithms, Edward Friesema

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The challenges of drone navigation have driven many advances in the development of autonomous systems. Unmanned Autonomous Vehicles(UAVs) operate in a rapidly changing flight space and have to balance a complex set of constraints and objectives. Many of these objectives can be represented in variations of the classic Traveling Salesman Problem. Numerous approximate solutions to TSP have been proposed over the years, but these approaches have difficulty when adding new constraints that require rapid recalculation of the solution. Either they are fast but do not provide solutions that are close to the optimum, or they provide excellent solutions but they …

Extreme Event Reconstructions For The Upper Fraser River Basin, British Columbia, Canada, Inga K. Homfeld May 2021

Extreme Event Reconstructions For The Upper Fraser River Basin, British Columbia, Canada, Inga K. Homfeld

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Spring freshets and summer droughts have recently worsened in the Fraser River Basin, British Columbia, Canada, with significant impacts to the keystone Pacific salmon populations, the food and economic sovereignty of over eighty First Nations, and the western Canadian economy. These extreme events present a potential risk since, unlike many large and less hydroclimatically-complex and/or empounded watersheds, the Fraser River Basin is susceptible to a combination of unregulated spring freshet and summer drought events even within the same year. A major limitation for understanding past and future extreme event risk in the Fraser River Basin is that observational streamflow datasets …

Chronicling Magma Transit Beneath Hawaiian Volcanoes: Every Isotope A Word, Every Crystal A Story, Jonathan Pinko May 2021

Chronicling Magma Transit Beneath Hawaiian Volcanoes: Every Isotope A Word, Every Crystal A Story, Jonathan Pinko

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

At many oceanic volcanoes, such as Hawaii, mantle-derived magmas migrate to crustal level magma chambers, where they accumulate before eruption. Understanding the magma chamber residence times, or the time gaps between the arrivals of new magmas and eruptions, is important in volcanic hazard mitigation. Here I apply iron and magnesium isotope effects in olivines to constrain these times at Hawaiian volcanoes. Combined with published data, I present bulk ?56Fe (-1.706 to 0.489) and ?26Mg (-0.400 to 0.356) in 108 Hawaiian olivines erupted from the pre-shield, shield, and post-shield stages. The Hawaiian olivine ?56Fe and ?26Mg represent the largest Fe-Mg isotope …

Estimation Of Spatial Change In Cropland Area And Evaluation Of Irrigation Performance In Imperial Valley Using Remotely Sensed Data, Usha Poudel

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The Imperial Valley (IV) in the US is an extensively irrigated agricultural region, which includes multiple crops changing on an annual and semiannual basis. The valley is facing grave concerns about water management due to its semi-arid environment, water intensive crops, and limited water supply. A simple, inexpensive, and repeatable method to detect changes in cropping patterns may assist irrigation managers to understand crop diversification and associated consumptive use. In addition, a spatial assessment of existing water irrigation system performance and productivity is crucial to benchmark and improve current water management strategies. This thesis estimates the spatial pattern of change …

Kaleidoscope Of Urban Evapotranspiration: Exploring The Science And Modeling Approaches, Rubab Saher May 2021

Kaleidoscope Of Urban Evapotranspiration: Exploring The Science And Modeling Approaches, Rubab Saher

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Urban evapotranspiration is a complex physical process. It depends on various critical drivers, including the land surface temperature (LST), surface albedo, landscape types, and building orientations. All of these factors create difficulties in the estimation of evapotranspiration (ET) by changing the microclimate conditions. The literature has oversimplified microclimate conditions by considering temperature difference as the only variable defining climate. The physical process depends on land-use changes, building proximities, and landscape types. This study devised three objectives to understand the microclimate effects on ET.

In the first objective, land-use change effects on LST, surface albedo, and ET were analyzed over a …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Background: Income is the strongest predictor of food insecurity among seniors, and social support also an essential factor to help mitigate the effects of food insecurity. However, little is known about the potential role that social support may play as a moderator of the association between income and food insecurity. Thus, we aim to examine social support as a moderator for the relationship between income and food insecurity among seniors. Methods: Logistic regression models were used to analyze data collected in 2019 from seniors residing in Southern Nevada. Predictors of food insecurity, sociodemographic factors, social support variables, and income and …

Accretion And Debris Disc Dynamics Around Single And Higher-Order Star Systems, Jeremy L. Smallwood May 2021

Accretion And Debris Disc Dynamics Around Single And Higher-Order Star Systems, Jeremy L. Smallwood

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

My research deals with highly topical areas of astrophysics, such as planet habitability, stellar evolution, the origin of fast radio bursts, the evolution of debris discs, and the dynamics of accretion discs in binary and higher-order star systems. Accretion discs around binary star systems are ubiquitous in the galaxy and planet formation is thought to occur within these discs. Circumbinary discs are commonly observed to be misaligned with respect to the binary orbital plane. A misaligned circumbinary disc eventually evolve to a stable orientation, either coplanar or polar with the binary orbital plane. The process of disc alignment has important …
