A recombinant baculovirus encoding a single-chain murine major histocompatibility complex class I molecule in which the first three domains of H-2Kd are fused to beta 2-microglobulin (beta 2-m) via a 15-amino acid linker has been isolated and used to infect lepidopteran cells. A soluble, 391-amino acid single-chain H-2Kd (SC-Kd) molecule of 48 kDa was synthesized and glycosylated in insect cells and could be purified in the absence of detergents by affinity chromatography using the anti-H-2Kd monoclonal antibody SF1.1.1.1. We tested the ability of SC-Kd to bind antigenic peptides using a direct binding assay based on photoaffinity labeling. The photoreactive derivative …

Failure Of The Congo Red Dye Uptake Test To Discriminate Between Virulent And Avirulent Avian Escherichia Coli, Kathy R. Spears, Richard E. Wooley, John Brown, Lisa K. Nolan
Lisa K. Nolan
Twenty avian Escherichia coli isolates from normal and diseased chickens were compared by use of three virulence tests. These tests included the uptake of Congo red dye, an embryo lethality test, and a quantitative microtiter complement resistance test. A direct correlation was seen between the results of the complement resistance test and the embryo lethality test. The results of the Congo red test did not correlate with the two other tests.

The Effect Of Vestibular Stimulation On Expressive Language Of Pre-Schoolers With Down Syndrome, Tiffany Bergo
Masters Theses
Effects of vestibular stimulation, when presented prior to language therapy, on expressive language abilities in pre-school children with Down syndrome were examined. Two subjects participated; one subject completed the study. Vestibular stimulation was therapist- and child-initiated and provided by various types of equipment. The subject's expressive language use (verbal and non-verbal) was videotaped during fifteen minutes of language therapy across a six-week, eleven-session period.
Results of this study indicate that expressive language use increased or improved across many parameters during the vestibular stimulation phase of the study. The subject displayed greatest gains in the use of multiple word utterances and …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science
During Feb. and May of 1991, we followed up 110 cases of the spinal cord injuries by questionnaire and telephone in the Tainan area. The patients are composed of 95 males and 15 females, ranging of age from 16 to 78 years with the mean age of 43.2 ± 14.7 years. About three-fifth of the subjects sufferred from their injuries in the recent three years. There are 51 cases of quadriplegia, 19 of the cases are complete. 59 cases of paraplegia also appear, 33 of them are complete too. Three fifth of these patients received rehabilitation. All complete quadriplegia must require …

To Survive And To Thrive: Integrating Services For The Homeless Mentally Ill, Marie D. Hoff, Katherine H. Briar, Kristin Knighton, Angie Van Ry
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
An intervention research project with homeless, chronically mentally ill persons demonstrated that linking rehabilitation services, such as employment skills and psycho-social stabilization, with survival services promotes success in serving this population. The project confirmed the central role of case managers in promoting engagement with mental health services and re-integration into stable community living.

Investigationinto The Role Of Goats And Sheep In The Epidemiology Of Foot-And-Mouth Disease In Northern Thailand, Pornchai Chomnanpood, Laurence Gleeson
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Investigations were carried out to determine whether goats and sheep were involved in the endemic cycle of foot-and-mouth disease in Northern Thailand. Evidence was obtained from serological surveys and an outbreak investigation. Serological data on surveyed flock was obtained from the virus neutralization test and the virus infection associated antigen agar gel diffusion test. It appeared that infection with all 3 endemic serotypes of foot-and-mouth disease virus occurred in goats and sheep, although in some cases the infection was subclinical.

Therapeutic Trial Of Acupuncture In Neurogenic Bladder Of Spinal Cord Injured Patients -- A Preliminary Report, Pao-Tsai Cheng, Yuch-Chaio Chu, May-Kuen Wong, Phei-Lang Chang
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Neurogenic bladder is a major problem for the spinal cord injured patients. A successful bladder training may not only reduce the mobility or mortality rate of these patients, but also improve the quality of their life and psychological outlook. However, it usually takes two to three months of bladder training to reach balanced status. This study was aimed to find the effect of electro-acupuncture in the management of neurogenic bladder in spinal cord injured patients.Totally 27 patients with complete spinal cord injury and neurogenic bladder were collected. Among them, 16 cases received electro-acupuncture at 4 acupoints: Chung Chi (CV3), Kuan …
