Urinary Phytate Concentration And Risk Of Fracture Determined By The Frax Index In A Group Of Postmenopausal Women, Angel Arturo Lopez Gonzalez, Felix Grases, Bartolome Mari, Matias Tomas-Salva, Adrian Rodriguez

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: This study was designed to evaluate the relationship between urinary phytate concentration and risk of fracture at 10 years, determined by using the FRAX model, in women who had undergone menopause within 5 years of the time of enrollment. Materials and methods: Of the 212 postmenopausal women evaluated, 69 were excluded because they had urinary phytate concentrations between 0.51 and 0.99 mg/L. Of the remaining 143 women, 91 had low (≤0.50 mg/L) and 52 had high (≥1.0 mg/L) urinary phytate concentrations. The 10-year risk of fracture was calculated by using the FRAX model. Results: The risks of major osteoporotic fracture …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Graves' disease (GD) is more severe, requires a more complex treatment, and has a lower probability of achieving remission in children than in adults. There is no consensus on the appropriate duration of antithyroid drug (ATD) treatment. Surgical or radioactive iodine (RAI) treatments are not definitive and generally result in permanent hypothyroidism. This study's goal was examining the effectiveness of ATD treatment in children and adolescents withGD and determining the risk factors of remission and relapse.Materials and methods: This retrospective study included 45 patients (36 females and 9 males, median age 12.5 years) aged 4-18 who were diagnosed with GD …

Irak-4 Rs4251481 Gene Variant: As A Risk Factor On Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Gonca Candan, Resul Kahraman, Hayri̇ye Arzu Ergen

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Abnormal immune response occurs in individuals who have alleles associated with innate and adaptive immune mechanisms that predispose to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Interleukin-1 receptor-associated kinase 4 (IRAK-4) involved in the pathway produces cytokines that initiate and maintain inflammation through Toll-like receptors and interleukin-1 receptors on the membranes of innate immune cells are stimulated with antigens. It was aimed to investigate whether IRAK-4 rs3794262 and rs4251481 polymorphisms predispose to IBD and the possible effects of these polymorphisms by examining these gene polymorphisms with the clinic and prognostic parameters of IBD.Material and methods: Real-time PCR technique was used to detect …

Background/aim: Intraabdominal hypertension (IAH) occurs frequently in patients with acute pancreatitis and adds to their morbidity and mortality. The main aim of the study was to identify the determination of the predictive factors connected to IAH that influence the evolution of acute pancreatitis. Materials and methods: The prospective cohort study was conducted on 100 patients who had acute pancreatitis. According to obtained intraabdominal pressure (IAP) values, the patients were divided into two groups: one group (n = 40) with normal IAP values and the other (IAH group, n = 60) with increased IAP values. Deceased patients were specially analyzed within …

Percutaneous Navigable Intradiscal Decompression In Treatment Of Lumbar Disc Herniation: A Single-Center Experience, Ayşegül Ceylan, Ibrahim Asik Jan 2019

Percutaneous Navigable Intradiscal Decompression In Treatment Of Lumbar Disc Herniation: A Single-Center Experience, Ayşegül Ceylan, Ibrahim Asik

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Minimally invasive procedures have been increasingly used for the treatment of herniated discs. Nonsurgical interventions minimize the secondary damage to other tissues and shorten the length of hospital stay by avoiding general anesthesia. Possible complications are thermal injuries, root injury, discitis, endplate damage, dural injury, meningitis, infection, increase in pain, and muscle spasm. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of percutaneous decompression therapy by using intradiscal navigable electrodes on pain and functional movement index in patients with herniated nucleus pulposus (HNP).Materials and methods: A total of 209 patients with protrusive lumbar disc herniation underwent percutaneous ablation decompression treatment using …

High Neutrophil-To-Lymphocyte Ratio Predicts Acute Allograft Rejection In Kidney Transplantation: A Retrospective Study, Gi̇ray Ergi̇n, Serpi̇l Müge Değer, Burak Köprü, Ülver Deri̇ci̇, Seli̇m Turgay Arinsoy

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Our research focused on the identification of easily available and sensitive markers for early prediction of acute kidney allograft rejection (AR). We aimed to investigate the association between neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and AR in kidney transplant patients. Materials and methods: The medical records of 51 kidney transplant patients [12 female/39 male; median age of 32 (IQR: 24-44) years] were evaluated retrospectively. We considered a cut-off value of >2.5 as high NLR. Results: A total of 22 biopsy-proven AR patients and 29 controls were evaluated. The AR group had a higher NLR compared to the controls (P < 0.001). NLR levels over 2.5 [95% CI: 54.88 (9.96-302.3), P < 0.001] were significantly associated with AR in univariate analysis. The NLR levels were the only significant factor associated with AR in multivariate models, in model 1 (adjusted by age and sex) [95% CI: 114 (11.1-1175), P < 0.001], and in model 2 (adjusted by steroid dosage, uric acid, and NLR) [95% CI: 4.60 (1.59-29.3), P = 0.004]. Conclusion: Our data showed that higher NLR values (>2.5) are associated …
