A Comparison Of A Validated Otolith Method To Age Weakfish, Cynoscion-Regalis, With The Traditional Scale Method, Luiz R. Barbieri, Mark E. Chittenden, Susan K. Lowerre-Barbieri
A Comparison Of A Validated Otolith Method To Age Weakfish, Cynoscion-Regalis, With The Traditional Scale Method, Luiz R. Barbieri, Mark E. Chittenden, Susan K. Lowerre-Barbieri
VIMS Articles
Otoliths, scales, dorsal spines, and pectoral-fin rays were compared to ascertain the best hardpart for determining the age of weakfish, Cynoscion regalis. Each showed concentric marks, which could be interpreted as annuli. Sectioned otoliths, however, consistently showed the clearest marks, had 100% agreement between and within readers, and were validated by the marginal increment method for ages 1-5. This validated method of ageing weakfish was then compared with the traditionally used scale method. The scale method was less precise, as demonstrated by lower percent agreement, and generally assigned younger ages for fish older than age 6 (as determined by otoliths). …
Morphometric And Genetic Identification Of Eggs Of Spring-Spawning Sciaenids In Lower Chesapeake Bay, Louis B. Daniel Iii, John Graves
Morphometric And Genetic Identification Of Eggs Of Spring-Spawning Sciaenids In Lower Chesapeake Bay, Louis B. Daniel Iii, John Graves
VIMS Articles
Restriction-fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of mitochondrial mtDNA was used to identify morphologically similar eggs of spring spawning sciaenids in lower Chesapeake Bay. During spring 1990 and 1991, ichthyoplankton surveys were conducted in lower Chesapeake Bay to estimate seasonal egg production and population biomass of black drum, Pogonias cromis. Rearing experiments indicated that at least three species of sciaenid (silver perch, Bairdiella chrysoura; weakfish, Cynoscion regalis and P. cromis) were spawning in the survey area during both years. Specific identification of eggs based on previously published ranges of outside egg diameter (OED) were not reliable because of considerable overlap in …

Potential Range Of The Zebra Mussel, Dreissena Polymorpha, In And Near Virginia, Patrick Baker, Shirley Baker, Roger L. Mann
Reports
This publication is devoted to predictions of the probability of invasion by the zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha (and the quagga mussel, Dreissena sp.) to specific bodies of water in Virginia. Probability of invasion is divided into risk and susceptibility. Risk refers to the chance, relative to other sites, that a body of water will be inoculated with Dreissena, in sufficient number to establish a population. Inoculation can occur by natural dispersal, but in the mid-Atlantic region is most likely to-occur though accidental introduction by humans, especially via boat traffic. Susceptibility of a body of water refers to the probability, based …
Evidence For A Relation Between A White Perch Young-Of-The-Year Index And Indices Of Later Life Stages, Thomas C. Mosca Iii, Herbert Austin, David M. Plotner
Evidence For A Relation Between A White Perch Young-Of-The-Year Index And Indices Of Later Life Stages, Thomas C. Mosca Iii, Herbert Austin, David M. Plotner
Reports
Juvenile indices are employed in fisheries management to predict the future relative abundance of harvestable adults and to monitor the success of management efforts. Frequently, regulations controlling utilization of the resource, and a lack of fishery independent abundance data, make verification of the prediction impossible. In the case of white perch (Morone americana) in Virginia, this is not so. Using the weighting system developed for a Chesapeake Bay-wide index of juvenile striped bass abundance based on summertime beach seine data collected in nursery ground waters, we developed a similar index for white perch in the Virginia portion of the Bay. …

The Status Of Virginia's Public Oyster Resource 1993, Reinaldo Alonzo-Morales, Roger Mann
Reports
This report summarizes data collected during 1993 in the Virginia portion of the Chesapeake Bay. The report is composed of two parts, part one, oyster recruitment (shell string) in Virginia and part two, dredge survey of selected oyster bars in Virginia.
Harvesting Efficiency And Size Selectivity Of 3.25 And 3.50 Inch Ring Sea Scallop Dredges : Final Cruise Report, William Dupaul
Harvesting Efficiency And Size Selectivity Of 3.25 And 3.50 Inch Ring Sea Scallop Dredges : Final Cruise Report, William Dupaul
Reports
Sea scallop dredges constructed with 3.25 inch (82 mm) and 3.50 inch (87 mm) rings were towed side-by-side to assess differences in harvesting efficiency and size selectivity of sea scallops (Piacopecten magellanicus). One hundred tows were made within the Canadian portion of Georges Bank from the northern edge eastward and south to the southeastern pari near Corsair Canyon. Quantities of and size distribution of scallops harvested were assessed for each dredge. Data will be analyzed to assess size selectivity and technical efficiency of scallop vessels operating in both the U.S. and Canadian portion of Georges Bank and factors affecting the …

A Contaminants Evaluation Of The Big Blue River In Southeastern Nebraska, Brent J. Esmoil, Kirk D. Schroeder, Timothy E. Fannin
A Contaminants Evaluation Of The Big Blue River In Southeastern Nebraska, Brent J. Esmoil, Kirk D. Schroeder, Timothy E. Fannin
United States Fish and Wildlife: Staff Publications
We collected three composite fish and three composite sediment samples from the Big Blue River in southeastern Nebraska to determine the presence of agricultural chemicals or other contaminants. Inorganic analyses consisted of individual analyses for arsenic, selenium, and mercury, as well as an ICP scan for other elements. Organic analyses included organochlorines, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, organophosphate and carbamate pesticides, and chlorphenoxy acid herbicides.
Arsenic was detected in the sediment samples, but not in the fish samples.
Selenium was detected in one of three sediment samples and in all fish samples.
Mercury was not detected in sediment samples, but was detected …
Settlement And Recruitment Of Bay Scallops, Argopecten Irradians (Lamarck 1819), To Artificial Spat Collectors In The Westport River Estuary, Westport, Massachusetts, Karin A. Tammi, Scott J. Soares, Wayne Turner, Michael A. Rice
Rice
Michael A Rice
In January 1993, The Waterworks Group initiated the Bay Scallop Restoration Project as an attempt to restore the once prolific bay scallop within the Westport River Estuary in Massachusetts. This project is a multi-phased endeavor aimed at better understanding recruitment failures of both natural stocks and introduced seed of Argopecten irradians. The main objective of this project is to assesss juvenile recruitment (survival to > 4mm) to artificial spat collectors placed in historically productive scallop beds and within close proximity to adult spawner rafts. Spat collectors (2 to 4mm plastic mesh bags) containing monofilament were suspended on 28 to 35-meter floating …
