Influence Of Infrared Absorbing Anions On Paper Coating Structure, Sachitanand Karnakote Apr 2003

Influence Of Infrared Absorbing Anions On Paper Coating Structure, Sachitanand Karnakote

Masters Theses

Infrared units are widely used in paper coating drying to initiate evaporation and quickly reach solids immobilization point. Thermal efficiency of IR units can be improved by increasing absorption of coating color. Borate compounds have shown good IR absorption at wavelengths typical to commercial IR units.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the compatibility of selected borate-containing compounds with the primary components of the paper coatings like clays, carbonates, and some binders.

Coatings were prepared at 60% solids and viscosity and pH were adjusted to 900-1200 cp and 8.5-9.5 respectively. Dynamic stress and frequency sweeps were carried out …

The Relationship Between Single-Disk Refining Energy, Strength Properties, And Freeness For Softwood, Hardwood, And Recycled Stock, Ken Marker Apr 2003

The Relationship Between Single-Disk Refining Energy, Strength Properties, And Freeness For Softwood, Hardwood, And Recycled Stock, Ken Marker

Masters Theses

Statistical and graphical analysis techniques were applied to disc refining operations in order to understand the relationship between strength and drainage properties for a given stock. Two refining variables of refining energy and revolutionary velocity were varied during the experiment. The calculated variable of refining intensity was used to represent these refining variables. The relationship between the refining energy, strength, and drainage properties for northern softwood, northern hardwood, and printing grade recycled stock was explored. Experimental pulp was obtained on a Beloit Jones Single-Disc refiner, and a handsheet study was used to develop the relationship with strength properties. Several empirical …

Regional Dispersal Of Daphnia Lumholtzi In North America Inferred From Issr Genetic Markers, G. Matthew Groves Jan 2003

Regional Dispersal Of Daphnia Lumholtzi In North America Inferred From Issr Genetic Markers, G. Matthew Groves

Masters Theses

The exotic zooplankter Daphnia lumholtzi is believed to have been introduced into Fairfield Lake, TX in 1983. Since introduction, D. lumholtzi has spread throughout the Midwest and Southeast United States. Due to its large head and tail spines, it may be less susceptible than native species to predation and therefore pose a threat to aquatic ecosystems. Development of management practices calls for study of the dispersal and potential impact of D. lumholtzi on invaded ecosystems.

Inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers were used in an effort to determine dispersal patterns of D. lumholtzi. Previous studies have shown that ISSRs possess …

Nest-Site Selection In The Eastern Box Turtle, Terrapene Carolina Carolina, In A Population In Central Illinois, Beth Flitz

Masters Theses

Nest site selection in turtles might allow females to increase the survival of their offspring but little is known about the variables that influence that choice. I examined the microhabitat variables at nest sites of the eastern box turtle, Terrapene carolina carolina, at a Boy Scout camp in Shelby County, Illinois, to determine if females chose nest sites that differed from random sites within the camp. Nest sites differed from random sites in vegetation height and composition, percentage ground and canopy cover, and light intensity. All females placed their nests in open habitat within the camp or a pasture bordering …

Populations Of Phaeophyscia Leana (Tuck.) Essl. Within The Ohio River Basin, R. N. Gillespie Jan 2003

Populations Of Phaeophyscia Leana (Tuck.) Essl. Within The Ohio River Basin, R. N. Gillespie

Masters Theses

Phaeophyscia leana (Tuck.) Essl., an endemic North American lichen species presently known to occur only within the Ohio River basin, is state-endangered in Illinois and a potential candidate for the Federal Endangered Species list. Since it utilizes periodically inundated corticolous substrates associated with river channels, oxbow lakes, and sloughs, this imperiled lichen is sensitive to landuse patterns within river floodplains. Surveys for P. leana were conducted to recensus previously documented populations, thereby assessing their stability, and to identify additional populations within the Ohio River Basin. Watercraft surveys were conducted on the Little Wabash River, from Carmi to New Haven, Illinois, …

Investigation Of Matrilineal Relationships Via Mitochondrial Dna In The Southeastern Yellowjacket (Vespula Squamosa), Anthony Deets Jan 2003

Investigation Of Matrilineal Relationships Via Mitochondrial Dna In The Southeastern Yellowjacket (Vespula Squamosa), Anthony Deets

Masters Theses

The question of whether and how apparently "altruistic" behaviors can evolve in social animals has received an enormous amount of attention from evolutionary biologists and has been termed "the central theoretical problem of sociobiology". Thus, recent interest is eusocial species with coexisting multiple queens stems from the realization that the genetic relatedness of individuals in such colonies presents additional theoretical challenges beyond those addressed by the Hamiltonian model of kin selection and lengthens the potential list of reproductive conflicts of interest.

The Southeastern Yellowjacket (Vespula squamosa) exhibits two social forms sympatrically in the southern parts of its range. These two …

Behavioral Aspects Of Apolipoprotein E Knockout Mice, Melissa T. Litherland Jan 2003

Behavioral Aspects Of Apolipoprotein E Knockout Mice, Melissa T. Litherland

Masters Theses

Apolipoprotein E (apoE) is a lipid transporting protein that has been shown to play a vital role in nerve repair and remodeling. Previous studies have shown that apoE is highly expressed in human and mouse olfactory bulbs. ApoE deficiency in apolipoprotein E knockout (apoE-KO) mice leads to considerable delay in olfactory nerve repair and deficits in olfactory functioning. Olfactory function is necessary for a number of social behaviors in mice. Loss of olfaction can greatly reduce social behaviors. Since apoE-KO mice display olfactory dysfunction, this deficit may result in alterations in social behavior. Olfactory function was assessed in apoE-KO mice …

Cell Biology Of Apoe In Cortical Cultured Neurons: Possible Roles In Alzheimer's Disease, Anna G. Barsukova Jan 2003

Cell Biology Of Apoe In Cortical Cultured Neurons: Possible Roles In Alzheimer's Disease, Anna G. Barsukova

Masters Theses

The apolipoprotein E4 (apoE4) genotype is a major risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Previous studies have shown that apoE4 is less effective than apoE3 in supporting neurite outgrowth in adult mice cortical cultures. However the mechanism underlying this phenomenon is not known. To understand this mechanism and the broader role of apoE isoforms on neuronal biology I examined the rate of apoE isoforms internalization in neurons, effects of apoE isoforms on lipid uptake by neurons, effects of apoE isoforms on neuronal environment - microglia and on neuroregeneration, or neurogenesis.

I examined the binding and internalization of recombinant human apoE3 …
