Prediction Of Total Phenols, Condensed Tannins, And 3-Deoxyanthocyanidins In Sorghum Grain Using Near-Infrared (Nir) Spectroscopy, L. Dykes, L. Hoffmann, O. Portillo-Rodriguez, W.L., Rooney, L.W. Rooney
Elvis A. Heinrichs
The reported high phenolic levels in sorghum have led an interest from sorghum breeding programs in developing and identifying germplasms with high phenolic levels, which require screening a large number of samples to find those with the highest levels. Since wet chemistry screening methods are slow, expensive, and destructive, the use of NIR calibration curves could be an alternative. The objectives of this project were to determine the variation range in total phenols, condensed tannins, and 3-deoxyanthocyanidin levels in a diverse set of sorghum genotypes and to assess the predictive value of NIR curves to estimate these compounds in sorghum. …

North Atlantic Vibrio Vulnificus Surveillance From Postharvest Oysters At A Us Shellfish Processing Facility, Kenneth Lavalley, Joseph Dealteris, Michael Rice, Marta Gomez-Chiarri
Marta Gomez-Chiarri
Postharvest surveillance for Vibrio vulnificus by a commercial processing facility was conducted from May 2001 to September 2003. Harvest areas included the Delaware Bay, Long Island Sound and Prince Edward Island. Occurrence followed a seasonal distribution. Low densities were observed in June, increased through August, and became rare by September. Given the ubiquitous nature of marine Vibrios, it was not surprising to find V. vulnificus everywhere, which was investigated. Observations confirmed the importance of strict time/temperature and product handling practices by shellfish harvesters, dealers and processors. Mishandling led to a potentially dangerous and uncharacteristically high V. vulnificus observation.

Impacts Of The Moreton Bay Marine Park Rezoning On Commercial Fishermen, Casper Van De Greer, Morena Mills, Vanessa Adams, Robert Pressey, Daryl Mcphee

The design of marine protected areas now typically incorporates socioeconomic data to minimize potential negative impacts on stakeholders. However, these data have limitations that are not well understood. Furthermore, whether the application of socioeconomic data in planning actually reduces avoidable negative impacts on stakeholders is rarely evaluated.
This study assessed impacts on commercial fishermen of the rezoning of the Moreton Bay Marine Park, in south eastern Queensland. Specifically, this study (1) compared estimates of opportunity costs of new no-take zones from before and after the rezoning was implemented, and (2) identified impacts of the new zoning scheme on fishing businesses …

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a debilitating age related progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the loss of cognition, and eventual death of the affected individual. One of the major causes of AD is the accumulation of Amyloid-beta 42 (Aβ42) polypeptides formed by the improper cleavage of amyloid precursor protein (APP) in the brain. These plaques disrupt normal cellular processes through oxidative stress and aberrant signaling resulting in the loss of synaptic activity and death of the neurons. However, the detailed genetic mechanism(s) responsible for this neurodegeneration still remain elusive. Methodology/ Principle Findings: We have generated a transgenic Drosophila eye model …

This article seeks to advance the understanding of the role of alcohol, drinking and drunkenness as an important, if under-researched, element of tourism. In so doing, we work at the intersection of three bodies of writing focused on mundane mobilities; performativities of tourism and geographies of alcohol, drinking and drunkenness. Drawing on empirical research undertaken in Australia, we highlight how alcohol, drinking and drunkenness are key to backpacking holidays: first, to help soften a number of (un)comfortable embodied and emotional materialities associated with budget travel; second, as an aid to spatial and temporal imperatives of ‘passing the time’ and ‘being …

Blue-Collar Creativity: Reframing Custom-Car Culture In The Imperilled Industrial City, Andrew Warren, Chris Gibson
Chris Gibson
This paper hitches a ride with young car enthusiasts to explore how their vehicles catalyse a unique form of vernacular creativity, in a seemingly imperilled industrial city setting. While television and print media regularly demonise young drivers for street racing and `hoon' behaviour, this paper purposely adopts a different perspective, on circuits of production and qualitative aspects of the urban custom-car design scene that constitute forms of vernacular creativity. Beyond moral panics little is known about movements, networks, and linkages between custom cars, young enthusiasts, and urban spaces from which their activities emerge. Utilising responsive, in-depth ethnographic methods in Wollongong, Australia, …

Sustainable Household Capability: Which Households Are Doing The Work Of Environmental Sustainability?, Gordon Waitt, Peter Caputi, Chris Gibson, Carol Farbotko, Lesley Head, Nick Gill, Elyse Stanes
Chris Gibson
This paper presents a framework for analysing which households are doing ‘their bit’ for sustainability in an era of climate change, using a two-stage cluster analysis of sustainable household capabilities. The framework segments households by their reported level of commitment to ‘pro-sustainability’ practices common to conventional government policies. Results are presented from a large-scale survey of Wollongong households, New South Wales, Australia. Results illustrate the importance of approaching household sustainability through everyday practices. Attention is drawn to the wide variation in participation in specific household sustainability practices. Investigation into sustainable household capability by household segments shows the limits of even …

Conceptualising Agency In The Lives And Actions Of Rural Young People, E. Robson, S. Bell, Natascha Klocker
Natascha Klocker
This chapter aims to build conceptually upon the accounts of young poopIe's actions in specific rural settings outlined in the proceeding chapters. like the wider body of ongoing reaearh on young people's everyday lives across the world, the foregoing chapters clearly demonstrate how the shift to viewing young people as individuals with the capacity to act and shape their own lives, i.e. to have agency, rather than seeing children simply 'adults in training' (Dunne 1980), passive and innocent dependants, or victims' has become firmly established in children's and youth studies. This volume illustrates some of the many ways in which …

An Example Of 'Thin' Agency: Child Domestic Workers In Tanzania, Natascha Klocker
Natascha Klocker
Child domestic works are children 'under the age of 18 who work in other people's households doing domestic chores, caring for children, and running errands, among other tasks' (UNICEF 1999:2). They can be paid in cash or kind and are employed by (and usually live in the homes of) adults who are not their parents. This chapter focuses on recent research centred on 'employing' three former child domestic workers (aged 14, 16 and 18) to be researchers and to undertake an investigation into CDW in the Iringa Region of Tanzania.
