Turkish Journal of Botany

Some low-molecular-weight carbohydrates extracted with ethanol and water from the fruits of Laurocerasus officinalis Roem. ( Rosaceae), from two different regions in Trabzon, were analysed using gas chromatography. In one population, the analysis in the ethanol extraction showed the occurence of fructose, glucose, sorbitol and sucrose in concentrations (w/w) of 25.20; 23.00; 14.00 and 0.024 %, respectively. The same sugars, in the water extraction were found in concentrations (w/w) of 24.62; 25.59; 7.43 and 0.114 %, respectively. Pollen Flora Of Pakistan - Viii Leguminosae (Subfamily: Papilionoideae), Anjum Perveen, Muhamad Qaiser

Turkish Journal of Botany

The pollen morphology of 157 species, representing 37 genera, of the subfamily Papilionoideae from Pakistan have been examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. Papilionoideae is a eurypalynous subfamily. The pollen grains are generally free, radially symmetrical, isopolar, mostly tricolporate, rarely colpate or porate. The shape is commonly prolate to sub-prolate, or prolate-spherodial, less commonly to oblate-spheroidal or sub-oblate, often perprolate. The ora is commonly la-longate or circular, rarely lolongate. Colpal membrane is psilate to sub-psilate or granulated, often scabrate. The sexine is thicker than or as thick as the nexine. A reticulate tectum type is the most common. However, …

The seasonal variations in phytoplankton blooms in Suat Uğurlu Reservoir were studied between July 1992 and De-cember 1993. In certain months, the species Asterionella formosa Hassal, Cyclotella planctonica Brunthaler, Melosira granulata (Ehr.) Ralfs (Bacillariophyta); Pediastrum simplex Meyen, Pandorina morum Borry (Chlorophyta) and Ceratium hirundinella (O F. Müller) Schrank (Dinophyta) produced blooms in the lake. During the study period, the measured N/P ratio in the water varied from 10.3 mg/lt to 62.5. The plants listed in this study were collected in the districts of Dörtyol and Erzin (Hatay) between 1989 and 1992. The study area, situated at the middle of Amanos Mountains, has a climate typical of its topographic structure and geographical position in the Mediterranean region. During floristic studies, 629 vascular plant taxa, belonging to 328 genera and 98 families were de-termined. The distribution of these taxa according to phytogeographic regions are as follows: 29.9% Mediterranean, 10.3% Euro-Siberian, 5.8% Irano-Turanian and 54.0% cosmopolitan and unknown. Pollen Flora Of Pakistan - Xi. Leguminosae(Subfamily: Mimosoideae), Anjum Perveen, Mohammad Qaiser

Turkish Journal of Botany

The pollen morphology of 14 species representing 5 genera of the subfamily Mimosoideae from Pakistan has been examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. Mimosoideae are eurypalynous subfamily. The pollen grains are united (polyads) or free. Single grains are tricolporate and triangular - trilobed. The pollen morphology of the subfamily is significantly useful at generic and tribal level. The 3 pollen types recognized ie, Acacia nilotica - type, Mimlosa hamata - type and Prosopis juliflora - type, correspond closely with tribal classifications.

Phytosociological And Ecological Structure Of Fraxinus Angustifoliasubsp. Oxycarpa Forests In The Central Black Sea Region, Hamdi Güray Kutbay, Mahmut Kilinç, Ali Kandemi̇r

Fraxinus angustifolia Vahl. subsp. oxycarpa (Bieb. ex Willd). Franco & Rocha Afonso forests formed pure stands along the alluvial delta of the Central Black Sea Region. These forests represent hygrophyllous azonal formations. This species usually forms mixed stands with other deciduous species in other regions. In this study the phytosociological structure and soil characteristics of F. angustifolia subsp. oxycarpa forests were investigated. Nutrient concentrations in the leaves of the dominant species F. angustifolia subsp. oxycarpa were also studied during mid-growing season and senescence. It was determined that nutrient concentrations tended to decrease during senescence.

The composition of the benthic algal communities and seasonal changes in the densities of the epipelic algae of Uzungöl Lake from April, 1991, to March, 1993, were studied. While the maximum density of the epipelic community was found to be 131111 cells/cm 2 at station I in April, 1991 the maximum density at station II in November, 1991, was 64581 cells/cm 2 . The effects of Polystimuline K (PS-K), as a cytokinin analogue, on delayed light component state (DF), intermittent fluorescence (IF) and chlorophyll (Chl) a/b ratio was investigated in the leaves of different genotypes of cotton ( Gossypium hirsutum L.) under salt stress (155 mM Na Cl) for different periods of time. It was shown that in the early perioid of salt stress, DF and IF amplitudes are decreased, which is indicative of a Photosystem II (PS II) activity decrease. Flora Of The Area Between Amasya Castleand The Villages Of Vermis And Yuvacik, Arzu Cansaran, Mustafa Aydoğdu

Turkish Journal of Botany

This study covers the flora of the area between Amasya Castle and the villages of Vermis and Yuvacık. In 1994, 670 plant specimens were collected in the study area and examined. At the end of the study, 75 families, 287 genera and 412 species were determined. The total number of taxa was found to be and 412 species were determined. The total number of taxa was found to be 420, 46 (10.95%) of which are endemic. The distribution rates of the specimens into phytogeographical regions are as follows: Irano-Turanian, 15.71%; Mediterranean, 9.52%; and Euro-Siberian, 7.38%.

In this study, the vegetation mosaic is determined by aerial photography and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) techniques around the first center of tourism development in the Uludağ Mountain. The cover of plant communities and vegetation types is calculated in both absolute values (ha) and as percentage (%) of the total research area. Dwarf shrub communities ( Vaccinium myrtillus Juniperus communis, Juniperus communis and Astragalus angustifoliis comm.) are dominant with a cover of 53%. In this study the possibilities of in vitro vegatitive propagation of almond ( Amygdalus communis L.) cv. Texas and cv. Nonpareil by shoot-tip culture were investigated. Different levels of IBA (0.0, 0.1 and 0.5 mg/l) and BAP (0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 mg/l) were tested by observing shoot development and growth during three successive stages, namely initiation, transplantation and multiplication. During the initiation stage, hormone-free medium or medium with low IBA (0.1 mg/l) only seemed favourable for shoot growth. With the aim of developing an efficient plant regeneration system from cells or tissues of sunflower ( Helianthus annuus L.), we compared several regeneration protocols using different explant types and hormonal combinations. Somatic embryogenesis could be induced on cotyledon explants, especially from the basal (proximal) portion of the cotyledons, but genotypic vairation appeared to be the most critical factor for both somatic embryo and root production. Such a variation was more prominent when 10 different sunflower cultivars were compared for shoot production from shoot-tip explants. This investigation covers studies undertaken on the liverworts of the Altındere Valley National Park, including the historical Sumela Meryemana Monastery located in the town of Maçka, province of Trabzon. As a result, 33 species belonging to 16 families of the class Marchantiopsida (Hepaticae) of the division Bryophyta have been identified. Of these, Porella arboris-vitae (With.) Grolle, P. cordaeana (Hüb.) Moore, P. obtusata (Tayl.) Trev. and Lejeunea lamacerina (Steph.) Schiffn. are reported for the first time from the A4 square of Turkey.

This study comprises new chorological data of 54 Bulgarian vascular plants. The occurrence of Glyceria nemoralis (Uechtr.) Uechtr. & Koern. in Bulgaria is confirmed. Thirty-four taxa are new for the Bulgarian region of Mt. Strandzha. The occurrence of 20 species in the Bulgarian region of Mt. Strandzha is confirmed. In addition, the distribution of Knautia degenii Borbás ex Form. in Bulgaria is briefly discussed.

The effects of various concentrations of Cytozyme Crop Plus (CCP) on Lycopersicum esculentum Mill. plant yield have been examined in this study. In our study, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and the total amounts of carotenoids in Cladophora glomerata (L.) Kuetzing, Ulva rigita L., Codium tomentosum (Huds.) Stackh and Cladostephus verticillatus Ag. species were determined. Methanol, acetone and diethyl ether were used as solvents. The chlorophyll amount in Cladophora glomerata L. Kuetzing, species and carotenoids in Cladostephus verticillatus Ag. were found the highest. It was observed that sonication had no much contribution to the extraction.

In the present study the effect of kinetin like synthetic hormone Polystimuline K (PS-K) on photosynthetic activity of salt stressed Trianea bogotensis Karst (Hydrocharitaceae) has been shown. Chlorophyll variable fluorescence (Fv) and slow fluo- rescence (SF) have been used to investigate the sensitivity of Photosystem II (PS II) to different salt stress treatments (103, 155 and 344 mM), at different time courses (15, 30, 60, 360 and 720 minutes). The seasonal variations in composition of the phytoplankton of Hafik lake was studied from April 1986to June 1987. Ba- cillariophyta, Chlorophyta, and Cyanophyta were the most abundant components of the phytoplankton community. Chrysophyta, Cryptophyta, Dinophyta, and Euglenophyta were found in low numbers. Diatoms showed an increase in spring but were scarce in summer and autumn. Cyclotella meneghiniana Kuetz. and Cyclotella ocellata Pant. were the most frequent species. Chlorophyta was the next most abundant group and showed greater numbers in spring than in autumn and summer. Chlamydonomonas, Oo- cytis, and Scenedesmus species were the main algae. The seasonal variations of planktonic diatoms occurring in the Keban and Içme regions of Keban Reservoir were in-vestigated over a 2-year period (January 1991 - December 1992). A total of 104 diatom taxa were determined. Cyclotella ocellata Pantocksek, C. kützingiana Thwaites (Centrales), Asterionella formosa Hassall and Fragilaria crotonensis Kitton (Pennales) were the most conspicuous diatoms in terms of frequency of occurrence and numbers of individuals in the phytoplankton.
