Juglone (5-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone) is an allelochemical responsible for walnut allelopathy. The effects of gibberellic acid (GA_{3}) and kinetin (KIN) on overcoming the effects of juglone stress on seed germination and seedling growth were investigated in barley, wheat, cucumber, alfalfa, and tomato. Seeds pre-treated with plant growth regulators were used to test their effects on the alleviation of juglone stress. It was observed that seed germination in tomato and wheat was inhibited by juglone and that the plant growth regulators alleviated it significantly. The Lower Cheliff plain is among the largest salted soils in north-western Algeria. In order to establish the relationships between the main soil factors and plant species in this stressed ecosystem, 133 relevés related to soil and vegetation were realized. Soil variables measured included electrical conductivity and calcium carbonate. The 133 relevés were arranged in clusters using k-means classification. The similarity analysis used to examine the variation in vegetation assemblage structure showed significant differences in taxonomical composition among groups of relevés. Elymus sosnowskyi, a rare endemic species known from East Anatolia, Turkey, was first collected by D. Sosnowsky in 1912. After that it has been collected only one other time, by F. Sorger in 1981. During the "Taxonomic revision of tribe Triticeae in Turkey" project, which was supported by TÜBİTAK, E. sosnowskyi was recollected from 3 populations in Oltu and Narman (A8 Erzurum, Turkey) in 2007 and 2008. The genus Lophanthus Adans. is recorded for the first time from Turkey. Specimens collected from Van province, east Anatolia, are described here as the new species Lophanthus turcicus Dirmenci, Yıldız & Hedge. Diagnostic characteristics that distinguish it from allied species are presented; a description, distribution map, and taxonomic comments are given.

A New Subspecies Of Stachys Cretica (Section Eriostomum, Lamiaceae) From Turkey, Ekrem Akçi̇çek

Stachys cretica L. subsp. kutahyensis Akçiçek subsp. nova is described as a new subspecies from West Anatolia, Turkey. It is related to Stachys cretica L. subsp. vacillans Rech. f. and Stachys cretica L. subsp. anatolica Rech. f., from which it differs in stem, leaf, and flower characters. Diagnostic characters, description, detailed illustrations, and taxonomic comments of the new subspecies are given. The geographical distribution of the subspecies is mapped. IUCN threat category and observations on the population are noted.

Anomodon longifolius (Schleich. ex Brid.) Hartm. is reported for the first time from Turkey, bringing the total number of Anomodon species known from Turkey to 6. This record extends its distribution range to the Western Black Sea region of Turkey. The nearest localities to Turkey for this species are in Bulgaria, Greece, the Caucasus, and Iran. This submeridional species was collected from 3 different localities (in Bolu and Bartın provinces) in Turkey. A site description, illustrations, and diagnostic characters of the Turkish specimens are given, together with notes on its distribution and ecology.

The genus Cyclotrichium, a member of the tribe Mentheae subtribe Menthinae (Lamiaceae, Nepetoideae), was analysed with respect to morphological revision, phylogenetic analysis, and cytogenetic properties. All species of the genus were investigated for morphological characters and ITS (internal transcribed spacers) of nrDNA sequence comparison (except C. hausknechtii for ITS). Six members of the genus were also analysed for chromosome numbers. The combined results strongly suggested that Cyclotrichium is a separate genus in Nepetoideae with distinct morphological, phylogenetic, and cytogenetic characteristics. The taxonomical status of Campanula tomentosa Lam. and C. vardariana Bocquet, belonging to the section Quinqueloculares (Boiss.) Phitos, which have important taxonomical problems, was reviewed in this study. Furthermore, morphological, anatomical leaf surface, and palynological features of these 2 species were examined in detail. Habit, shape of leaves, calyx, corolla, stamen, pistil, and seed micromorphological features as morphological characters; and pollen diameter, pore diameter, spinule length, and number, ornamentation, etc. as palynological characters, were examined and discussed. The precise evaluation of the conservation status of endemic and rare species is necessary in order to prevent their extinction. According to our current taxonomic revision of Turkish Salvia L., the Mediterranean and Aegean geographic regions of Turkey have 60 taxa, 32 of which are endemic (mainly local endemics), 5 of which are non-endemic rare, and the remaining 23 taxa are widely distributed. The rate of endemism is 53% in the area. A protocol for the in vitro seed germination, seedling development, and axillary shoot propagation of Dorystoechas hastata Boiss. & Heldr. ex Bentham is described. By employing sterilised seeds that were transferred onto in vitro media, the effects of various in vitro media, photoperiods, and temperatures on germination were investigated. At the end of these experiments, a final protocol was determined for the in vitro germination of D. hastata seeds. We investigated the germination requirements of a rare endemic plant species, Pedicularis olympica Boiss. (Scrophulariaceae), which grows in wet habitats on Uludağ Mountain, Turkey. We studied the effects of scarification, moist chilling (+4 °C) for 15 days, different doses of gibberellic acid (GA_{3}; 100, 150, and 250 ppm) and combined hormone and moist chilling treatments under dark (20 °C) and photoperiod (20/10 °C; 12/12 h, respectively) conditions. The ovule ontogenesis and the megasporogenesis events in Onobrychis schahuensis Bornm. were studied with light microscopy. The primordium is tetra-zonate and gives rise to an anatropous ovule. The archesporium may consist of one or more archesporial cells, but only one of them undergoes meiosis, forming a linear shaped tetrad. Normally, only a single megaspore is functional, which is located in the chalazal position, while the others degenerate very soon. The young ovule is hemianatropous but the mature one is anatropous, crassinucellar, and bitegmic; integuments form a zig-zag micropyle. In the present study, seed surface morphology of species of the genus Ebenus L. in Turkey, all of which are endemic, was studied. E. plumosa var. speciosa has the biggest and E. laguroides var. laguroides has the smallest seeds. The seed shapes are spheroid in E. reesei, orbiculate in E. pisidica, and oblong-spheroid in others. Ornamentation is striate in E. macrophylla, rugose in E. haussknechtii, and reticulate or multi-reticulate in others. Microphylle is subterminal in all Turkish Ebenus species.

The effects of 2 nitrate levels, 14 (CK) and 140 mmol L^{-1} (T), on the leaf gas exchange variables of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. cv. Xintaimici) seedlings grown in hydroponic culture were investigated. Photosynthetic light- and CO_{2}-response curves from CK and T seedlings were determined and used for the analysis of photosynthetic capacity. The results showed that nitrate stress resulted in a significant reduction of net photosynthesis of T seedlings compared with CK. At the same time, the apparent quantum yield, light-saturated net photosynthesis, carboxylation efficiency, and CO_{2}-saturated net photosynthesis in nitrate-stressed cucumbers also decreased significantly with the increase of …

Hypocotyl explants of 3 flax cultivars were cultured for adventitious shoot regeneration in 3 different ways. Two pretreatment applications were compared with the routinely applied conventional regeneration protocol of culturing explants directly on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium containing 1 mg L^{-1} 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) and 0.02 mg L^{-1} naphthalene acetic acid (NAA). Macrofungi specimens were collected from different localities in Derebucak district (Konya province) between 2005 and 2007, particularly during the autumn and spring. As a result 134 species were identified. Thirteen of them belong to Ascomycota, and the other 121 belong to the division Basidiomycota. According to the present literature about the macrofungi of Turkey, 6 taxa are new records for Turkey. These are Lachnellula calyciformis (Willd.) Dharne of the division Ascomycota, and Hebeloma stenocystis J.Favre, Cortinarius calochrous var. coniferarum (M.M.Moser) Nezdojm., Cortinarius cupreorufus Brandrud, Inocybe ayeri Furrer-Ziogas, and Calocera pallidospathulata D.A.Reid of the division Basidiomycota.

The taxonomic study of 382 samples collected from Hatila Valley National Park (Artvin, Turkey) revealed 126 taxa of macromycetes, belonging to 34 families and 60 genera. Two of them, Arrhenia acerosa (Fr.) Kühn. (Tricholomataceae) and Entoloma politum (Pers.: Fr.) Donk. (Entolomataceae), are new records for Turkey.

Species Composition And Diversity Of Epipelic Algae In Balık Lake (Şavşat-Artvin, Turkey), Bülent Şahi̇n, Bülent Akar, İmran Bahçeci̇

The species composition and diversity of the epipelic algae of Balık Lake were investigated between May and October 2008. A total of 39 taxa were determined, and Cyclotella meneghiniana, Craticula cuspidata, Closterium strigosum, Cocconeis placentula var. euglypta, and Amphora ovalis were the most conspicuous algae, regarding frequency of occurrence and relative abundance in the epipelic algal flora. While the highest total cell number of the epipelic community was 26,214 cells/cm^2 in October, the lowest was 23,644 cells/cm^2 in July. The highest species diversity index (H^{'}) value was 2.26, in June.

Pollen grains of 39 taxa of the genus Fritillaria L. in Turkey were examined by light and scanning electron microscopy. Detailed pollen morphological characteristics are given for these taxa. Our investigation shows that the sculpturing of the exine provides valuable characters for separating species. In particular, sculpturing of the exine at the proximal face turned out to be taxonomically important. Six types of ornamentation were determined: reticulate, reticulate-perforate, suprareticulate, rugulate-reticulate, psilate-perforate, and perforate. On the basis of exine sculpturing, the sulcus membrane, and the apex sulcus, 5 main pollen types are recognised.

Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) is one of the easiest and most commonly used molecular techniques for genetic variability analysis. In the present study, the genetic diversity of analysis of Bellis perennis L. collected in 4 Turkish geographical locations was investigated by RAPD-PCR analysis. In addition to RAPD, pollen analysis of the 4 plant populations was also conducted. Out of 40 RAPD primers tested, 12 exhibited distinct banding patterns showing 45% to 79% polymorphism. Karyology Of Ten Turkish Trigonella L. (Leguminosae) Species From Section Cylindricae Boiss., Esra Marti̇n, Hasan Akan, Murat Eki̇ci̇, Zeki̇ Aytaç

This study describes the karyotypes of 10 Turkish species of Trigonella L. belonging to section Cylindricae Boiss. (Leguminosae). Excluding the karyotypes of T. velutina Boiss. and of T. sibthorpii Boiss., which were previously studied, all of the other 8 species were studied here for the first time. The species of the section were gathered from different localities in Turkey, and it was determined that the somatic chromosome numbers for all species were the same (2n = 16). Also, satellite metaphase chromosomes were determined in T. velutina and T. strangulata.

Pollen morphology of the 13 taxa of Scorzonera L. (Asteraceae) from Turkey was investigated by using light (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). As a result of LM and SEM observations, it was found that the pollen types are generally isopolar, radially symmetric, triangular in polar view, and lophate, with lophae ornamentations that are echinate-perforate and an exine thickness ranging from 6.99 to 11.82 µm. Echinops dumanii C.Vural is described and illustrated from Adana province, South Anatolia, Turkey. It is considered to be endemic to Turkey. The morphological differences from the closely related species Echinops phaeocephalus Hand.-Mazz. are discussed. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) threat category and observations on the ecology of the populations are noted. The geographical distribution of the new species is mapped.
