Morphological revision and phylogenetic analysis of Stachys L. sect. Eriostomum (Hoffmanns. & Link) Dumort. (Lamiaceae) based on nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (nrITS) sequences were conducted. Morphological analysis confirmed the previous arrangements of 3 subsections, i.e. Germanicae R.Bhattacharjee, Creticae R.Bhattacharjee, and Spectabiles R.Bhattacharjee, while suggesting some status changes and new records that were also confirmed by the phylogenetic analysis. The phylogenetic analysis suggested, however, some arrangements different from those indicated by morphology. Two subsections, i.e. Creticae and Germanicae-Spectabiles, instead of 3 were observed in the phylogenetic tree. The tree also suggested that 9 Stachys cretica L. subspecies form a polyphyletic …

A taxonomic revision of the genus Oxytropis DC. (Leguminosae) in Turkey is presented. According to the recent literature, the genus had 13 taxa in Turkey; however, at the end of our studies the number was reduced to 11. It was determined that Oxytropis engizekensis Duman & Vural is a synonym of O. persica Boiss., and O. fominii Grossh. is a synonym of O. argyroleuca Bornm. Leaf Epidermis Morphology Of Some Onosma (Boraginaceae) Species From Turkey, Öznur Ergen Akçi̇n, Gülcan Şenel, Yaşar Akçi̇n

The leaf epidermis of 14 Onosma L. species was examined by light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The leaf characters studied showed some variations. Morphologic features of the epidermal cells such as shape, structure of the anticlinal walls, stomatal size, outer stomatal rims, peristomatal rims, and apertures were summarised in the examined taxa. It was found that these characters are variable in the genus but usually they are stable within a species. Epidermal cells of the investigated taxa are polygonal, elongated, or irregular. The aim of the present study was to understand the ecological adaptation of Pinus roxburghii Sarg. in the North-West Himalayan region. P. roxburghii needles showed morphological, epidermal, and anatomical variation at different altitudes. Needle length was negatively correlated with altitude. Stomatal characters like stomatal density, stomatal index, and guard cell lengths were found to be affected by environmental factors and showed a direct correlation with altitude. The results showed that potential conductance index was dependent on the climatic conditions of the habitat. As a part of a revisional study of the genus Allium L. sect Melanocrommyum Webb et Berthel. in Turkey, detailed studies were conducted on 3 very closely related and taxonomically difficult species cited in the Flora of Turkey: Allium cyrilli Ten., A. atropurpureum Waldst. & Kit., and A. decipiens Fisch. ex Schult. & Schult. f., to clarify their occurrence in Turkey and their taxonomy. Analysis Of Airborne Pollen Grains In Denizli, Aykut Güvensen, Ali̇ Çeli̇k, Bülent Topuz, Müni̇r Öztürk

Airborne pollen distribution in Denizli Province was measured volumetrically during 2 consecutive years, 2005 and 2006, on a weekly basis. A total of 11,981 pollen grains/m^3 belonging to 42 taxa were determined. In 2005 the total was 5368 pollen grains/m^3 and in 2006 it was 6613 pollen grains/m^3. Among the taxa recorded, 26 belonged to arboreal and 16 to nonarboreal taxa. At the end of the 2 years total pollen counts comprised 79.68% arboreal, 19.48% nonarboreal, and 0.84% unidentified taxa. Patterns Of Aquatic Macrophyte Species Composition And Distribution In Bulgarian Rivers, Gana Gecheva, Lilyana Yurukova, Svetoslav Cheshmedjiev

The composition of aquatic bryophyte and vascular plant assemblages, and 4 environmental variables (water velocity, shading, mean depth, and substrate type), together with altitude, ecological status, and river type were monitored at 223 sites along 204 rivers during 2009 in the Pontic Province and Eastern Balkan Ecoregions, Bulgaria. The relationships between macrophytes themselves and the parameters studied were tested. Forty-nine bryophytes and 86 vascular plants were identified. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) showed that aquatic bryophytes and vascular plants are in inverse correlation. Spatial Pattern Analysis Of Peganum Harmala On The Salted Lower Chelif Plain, Algeria, Adda Ababou, Mohammed Chouieb, Abdelkader Bouthiba, Djamel Saidi, Mahfoud M'Hamedi Bouzina, Khalladi Mederbal

Turkish Journal of Botany

Peganum harmala L. (Zygophyllaceae), native to arid and semiarid rangeland, has been widely studied biochemically, pharmaceutically, and medicinally, but is largely unknown ecologically. In the lower Chelif, Algeria, this plant is largely present and shows a clear clumped pattern, which indicates the strong effects of environmental conditions. Our redundancy analysis showed that the geographic distribution of this species was positively correlated with sand and pH and negatively correlated with conductivity, Na^+, and clay. The Gaussian model suggested that 9.4 mmhos/cm conductivity and sand contents greater than 40% are optimum for this plant. The spatial distribution map obtained through the kriging …

The goal of this work was to study the stimulating effects of mannan and pectin on the biosynthesis of hypericins in in vitro seedlings of Hypericum adenotrichum Spach. Seedlings of H. adenotrichum were grown on a modified MS medium containing mannan (10, 50, and 100 mg/L) or pectin (10, 50, and 100 mg/L) for 15 and 30 days. Seedlings of H. adenotrichum were extracted with methanol. The methanol extracts of the seedlings were analysed by HPLC to investigate the changes in hypericin and pseudohypericin levels. The effects of excess and deficient boron and niacin on vascular tissues of carrot roots (Daucus carota L. cv. Nantes) were investigated in plants grown in medium both rich and poor in boron and also boron with niacin. Five media were investigated: control (MS medium), boron-deficient MS medium, MS medium with excess boron, niacin-deficient MS medium, MS medium with niacin excess, and MS medium with excess boron and niacin. Spindle Irregularities, Chromatin Transfer, And Chromatin Stickiness During Male Meiosis In Anemone Tetrasepala (Ranunculaceae), Pawan Kumar Rana, Puneet Kumar, Vijay Kumar Singhal

Detailed cytological investigations performed in Anemone tetrasepala Royle from the Pangi Valley revealed the presence of various irregularities (spindle irregularities, chromatin transfer, chromatin stickiness, and nonsynchronous condensation of chromatin material) for the first time in the species that existed at diploid level (2n = 14). Spindle irregularities resulted in dyads, triads, polyads, and micronuclei in sporads during microsporogenesis and variable sized pollen grains and reduced fertility in pollen grains (85.38%). Direct fusion among proximate meiocytes resulted in the formation of syncyte pollen mother cells. Such syncytes yielded jumbo-sized pollen grains that were surely of unreduced nature in their genetic constitution. …

İzmir Bay has been one of most polluted bays of the Mediterranean for a long time. When the 'Big Channel Project' was completed in 2000, sewage flow into the bay ended. Hence, the influence of creeks, which are the only source of water transportation to the inner bay, was investigated in the current study. Monthly samples of creek water and seawater were taken. Basic water quality variables and nutrients were measured. The physiological responses to nitrate stress of 2 transgenic tobacco lines containing the cucumber mitogen-activated protein kinase (CsNMAPK) gene were investigated. Seed germination rates of the transgenic tobacco lines were higher than that of the wild type (WT) tobacco under 150 mM nitrate treatment. The transgenic seedlings had higher root fresh weight (FW) and dry weight (DW) than the WT plants after 98 mM and 182 mM nitrate treatment. A floristic study of the Yıldız Mountains Biosphere Project was undertaken between May and October 2009. The project area is located in the north-eastern part of European Turkey, within flora square A1-A2 (E) (Kırklareli), and covers about 1300 km^2. The list of vascular plants was prepared mainly based on specimens collected during the flora surveys of the Project and supplemented by earlier gathered specimens kept in the EDTU, ISTE, and ISTO herbaria. In the project area 1315 taxa, belonging to 505 genera and 113 families, were determined. Among these, 18 taxa are Pteridophytes, 4 Gymnospermae, 1035 Dicotyledones, and 258 Monocotyledones. …

Forty-four Silene L. taxa belonging to the sections Siphonomorpha Otth, Lasiostemones Boiss., Sclerocalycinae Boiss., Chloranthae Rohrb., Tataricae Chowdhuri, and Otites (Adams.) Otth were studied. The Silene specimens used in the study were collected from different localities between 2005 and 2007. Their conservation status, phytogeographical regions, and distribution in Turkey were determined. Detailed drawings of the general view and flower from each species were added to the study. As a result of these detailed investigations, the conditions of some species having taxonomic problems were re-examined, and suggestions were proposed. Atmospheric pollen grains of Kuşadası were captured using Durham samplers and investigated in 2005. The total number of pollen grains and the pollen grains/cm^2 were calculated from slides that were changed weekly. During the study period a total of 12,980 pollen grains/cm^2 belonging to 44 identified taxa and unidentified pollen grains were recorded at 2 stations. At the first station (S1), 7346 pollen grains were counted per cm^2, while only 5634 pollen grains were counted at the second station (S2). Archaeobotanical macro remains recovered from the Ayanis fortress and the outer town of the Urartian period of the Iron Age (685-645 BC), located in the area of Van (Turkey), were investigated. Most of the remains were charred due to fire. Large quantities of Hordeum vulgare L. (hulled barley), Panicum miliaceum L. (broomcorn millet), and Setaria italica (L.) P.Beauvois (foxtail millet) were found at the study site, indicating the storage of agricultural surplus. Other types of cereal remains were also recorded, including Triticum aestivum L. The time-dependent effect of salicylic acid (SA) on alleviating cold damage in the Tokak (tolerant) and Akhisar (sensitive) varieties of barley (Hordeum vulgare) was investigated. Seedlings subjected to 0.0, 0.1, and 1 mM SA for 7 days were transferred to cold (7/5 °C) on days 7, 14, 21, and 28 for 3 days. It was found that 0.1 mM SA had a greater alleviating effect, decreasing the freezing injury in both varieties for at least 10 days after the application. Selection of suitable genotypes resistant to unfavourable environmental and soil conditions and diseases is important for increasing the yield efficiency and acreage of this important crop. The aim of this research was to compare commercial pomegranate genotypes in Iran and to determine any correlations between morphological characteristics. Eight pomegranate types were used during the research. Twenty-six morphological characteristics were evaluated based on the pomegranate descriptor. The phytosociological properties of the forest, shrub, and steppe vegetation of Kızıldağ (Isparta province) were investigated in 2010 and 2011. The vegetation of the area was analysed using a 3-dimensional ordination technique based on the Braun-Blanquet method. As a result, 5 new plant associations were determined as belonging to forest, shrub, and steppe vegetation and classified syntaxonomically. The associations and their higher units are as follows. Sixty mosses belonging to 12 families and 31 genera are presented from Al-Ghab plain in north-west Syria. Among these, 29 species are recorded for the first time for the bryophyte flora of Syria.

Grimmia anomala Schimp., Pohlia filum (Schimp.) Mårtensson, and Hookeria acutifolia Hook. & Grev. are noteworthy moss species reported here for the first time in South-West Asia from specimens collected in north-eastern and north-western Turkey. The diagnostic characters, habitat preferences, illustrations, and updated ranges of the treated species are given together with notes comparing them with those of related taxa.

Succession Of Epiphytic Bryophytes In Cedrus Libani Forest On The Meydan Plateau (Aladağ), Tülay Ezer, Recep Kara

The succession of epiphytic bryophytes was investigated in Cedrus libani A.Rich. forest on the Meydan Plateau (Aladağ). A total of 19 taxa (16 mosses, 3 liverworts) were recorded in 90 sampling relevés, 4 dm^2 each. Index of ecological significance (IES) was used to evaluate the ecological importance of the taxa in epiphytic habitats on tree trunks. Additionally, the epiphytic bryophyte succession of the cedar forest was analysed using multivariate classification techniques (TWINSPAN and DECORANA). The multivariate analysis results showed that the epiphytic bryophyte communities were divided into 2 main groups and 5 different subgroups associated with successional gradient. Polyphenol profiles can suffer quali-quantitative modifications as the plant modifies its phenological condition. The objective of this work was to determine if there is a rhythm of production in the synthesis of polyphenols according to the phenological condition in the leaves, roots, and rhizomes of Smilax campestris Griseb. The plant material analysed corresponded to individuals of a colony of S. campestris collected in different phenological conditions. Standard methodology was used for the chromatographic profiles of flavonols (kaempferol, quercetin, isorhamnetin, and their glycosides) and proanthocyanidins (procyanidin and propelargonidin) and quantification of total phenol, condensed tannins, and flavonols. The coast of Pakistan (North Arabian Sea) is under the influence of the seasonal cycle of monsoons, which may result in 2 periods of elevated phytoplankton productivity, one during the north-east monsoon (December-February) and the other during the south-west monsoon (May-September). In the present study, elevated primary productivity in the Miani Hor Lagoon and adjacent open sea off Pakistan was found during the south-west monsoon (May-September) and spring inter-monsoon (March-April). The moss flora of Artvin Province (Ardanuç, Şavşat, Borçka, Murgul, and Arhavi districts) in Turkey was studied between 2009 and 2011. A total of 167 moss taxa (belonging to 80 genera and 33 families) were recorded within the study area. Among these, 3 species [Dicranella schreberiana (Hedw.) Dixon, Dicranodontium asperulum (Mitt.) Broth., and Campylopus pyriformis (Schultz) Brid.] are new records from the investigated area for the moss flora of Turkey.
