On The Synthesis Of Optimal Control Laws, Meir Pachter, Isaac E. Weintraub Dec 2021

On The Synthesis Of Optimal Control Laws, Meir Pachter, Isaac E. Weintraub

Faculty Publications

In this paper we advocate for Isaacs' method for the solution of differential games to be applied to the solution of optimal control problems. To make the argument, the vehicle employed is Pontryagin's canonical optimal control example, which entails a double integrator plant. However, rather than controlling the state to the origin, we correctly require the end state to reach a terminal set that contains the origin in its interior. Indeed, in practice, it is required to control to a prescribed tolerance rather than reach a desired end state; achieving tight tolerances is expensive, and from a theoretical point of …

Modeling And Control Of A 7-Level Switched Capacitor Rectifier For Wireless Power Transfer Systems, Spencer Cochran

Doctoral Dissertations

Wireless power continues to increase in popularity for consumer device charging. Rectifier characteristics like efficiency, compactness, impedance tunability, and harmonic content make the multi-level switched capacitor rectifier (MSC) an exceptional candidate for modern WPT systems. The MSC shares the voltage conversion characteristics of a post-rectification buck-boost topology, reduces waveform distortion via its multi-level modulation scheme, demonstrates tank tunability via the phase control inherent to actively switched rectifiers, and accomplishes all this without a bulky filter inductor. In this work, the MSC WPT system operation is explained, and a loss model is constructed. A prototype system is used to validate the …

Automated Flight Controller Adaptive Compensation For Actuator Failures In Transport Type Aircraft, Daniel James Fresella

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Aircraft operate over a wide range of conditions including atmospheric, weight, and center ofgravity changes. This presents a substantial challenge to automatic control system designers. When these operating conditions are merged with a partial or full control surface failure, automatic flight control is near impossible with conventional controllers. Additionally, when pilots experience control failure emergencies during flight, workload and fatigue increase drastically. The continued research of automatic flight control systems that can seamlessly adapt to unmodelled failures will enable a new generation of robust aircraft control. In this paper a 9th order 6 degree of freedom aircraft model is used …

Real-Time Parkinsonian Tremor Signal Identifier Based On Internal Model Principle, Jian Dong Aug 2021

Real-Time Parkinsonian Tremor Signal Identifier Based On Internal Model Principle, Jian Dong

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Parkinsonian tremor is one of the clinical hallmarks of Parkinson's disease. Since the traditional medical treatments are not effective, many wearable devices are developed to help suppress the tremor. In order to suppress the tremor, a well-designed tremor estimator is needed. Previous tremor estimators treat a 3-D tremor signal as three independent 1-D signals. Moreover, they did not consider the real-life characteristics of tremor signals. For instance, the tremor does not always exist in the postural tremor signal, and the patient's voluntary motion can be included in the kinetic tremor signal. This paper presents a real-time adaptive parkinsonian tremor signal …

Impact And Application Of Real-Time Control On Stormwater Systems, Aaron A. Akin Aug 2021

Impact And Application Of Real-Time Control On Stormwater Systems, Aaron A. Akin

Doctoral Dissertations

Stormwater control measures (SCMs) such as dry extended detention basins and wet ponds are common practices implemented by engineers and designers to mitigate the impact of stormwater runoff. These practices are designed based on historical rainfall data to attenuate runoff to pre-development conditions and, once they are installed, are unable to adapt to changing rainfall patterns or watershed restoration objectives. To solve these climate resiliency issues, several studies were conducted which investigated the impact of retrofitting such systems with a controllable outlet to increase or change detention times during rainfall events along with the novel instrumentation and methodologies necessary for …
