Effervescent atomization uses the internal gas-liquid mixture to produce spray. The behavior of two-phase flow inside the atomizer influences the spray characteristics and is dependent on the atomizer internal geometry and operating conditions. The present study is conducted in two parts; study of the bubble formation from a novel submerged nozzle in a liquid cross-flow and investigation of the internal and external two-phase flows in an effervescent atomizer.

This thesis proposes a phase-angle tracking method, i.e., based on discrete Fourier transform for synchronization of three-phase and single-phase power-electronic converters under distorted and variable-frequency conditions. The proposed methods are designed based on fixed sampling rate and, thus, they can simply be employed for control applications. For three-phase applications, first, analytical analysis are presented to determine the errors associated with the phasor estimation using standard full-cycle discrete Fourier transform in a variable-frequency environment. The development of a strategy to improve oxygen delivery to cells seeded on scaffolds is essential for the success of tissue engineering applications. The focus of this work was to explore the application of cyclodextrin inclusion complexes (CD:ICs) with perfluorocarbons as oxygen carriers. CD:ICs were prepared from alpha-cyclodextrin and perfluoroperhydrophenanthrene via co-precipitation, paste mixing, and dry mixing complexation techniques. Characterization indicated that paste mixing at a 2:1 host:guest ratio was the most effective method for complexation between the parent molecules. This work investigates the effects of oar-shaft stiffness and length on rowing biomechanics. The mechanical properties of the oar-shafts were examined using an end-loaded cantilever system, and theoretical relations were proposed between the mechanics of the oar-shafts and rowing performance. On-water experiments were subsequently conducted and rowing biomechanics measured via the PowerLine Rowing Instrumentation System. The PowerLine system measures force and oar angle on the oarlock, as well as proper boat acceleration. Obtaining stable aqueous dispersions is one of the main challenges hindering a widespread and effective use of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) in many applications. Although it has been recognized that their versatility makes them an extremely attractive material, the unique molecular structure that gives SWNTs their unmatched electronic, mechanical, and thermal properties is also responsible for strong van der Waals interactions. This, combined with extremely high aspect ratios and flexibility, causes SWNTs to adhere strongly into tightly bundled ropes. The aim of this study was to assess the synergistic effects of co-fermentation of glucose, starch, and cellulose using anaerobic digester sludge (ADS) on the biohydrogen (H2) production and the associated microbial communities. At initial pH of 5.5 and mesophilic temperature of 37 ºC, the H2 yields were greater by an average of 27 ± 4% in all the different co-substrate conditions compared to the mono-substrate conditions, which affirmed that co-fermentation of different substrates improved the hydrogen potential. Photoacoustic imaging is a hybrid imaging technique that combines many of the merits of both optical and ultrasound imaging. Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) has been hypothesized as a technique for imaging neonatal brain. However, PAI of the brain is more challenging than traditional methods (e.g. near infrared spectroscopy) due to the presence of the skull layer. Oil refinery contaminated soils usually contain carcinogenic products, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and therefore require treatment for environmental and human protection. Biostimulation is the modification of external factors affecting the performance of indigenous bacteria and it may be employed to enhance natural attenuation at contaminated sites. Contaminated soil samples, provided by Imperial Oil (Sarnia, Ontario), were analyzed using pyrosequencing to sequence DNA strains in order to identify types of bacterial genus found in the samples. Flavobactericeae and Marinobacter were the two most dominant genus found in the sample, both recorded with the ability to degrade PAHs.

A universal performance analysis model is established for general two-dimensional plasmonic sensors. This model is based on the fundamental facts of surface plasmon theory.
