In this paper, fast and efficient discrete sine transformation (DST) algorithms are presented based on the factorization of sparse, scaled orthogonal, rotation, rotation-reflection, and butterfly matrices. These algorithms are completely recursive and solely based on DST I-IV. The presented algorithms have low arithmetic cost compared to the known fast DST algorithms. Furthermore, the language of signal flow graph representation of digital structures is used to describe these efficient and recursive DST algorithms having (n􀀀1) points signal flow graph for DST-I and n points signal flow graphs for DST II-IV.

Latent variables (i.e., normally distributed random noise) provide valuable information regarding model input uncertainty. Watershed processes have been explored with sophisticated simulation models in the past few decades and researchers have found that incorporating the uncertainty attributed to forcing inputs, model parameters, and measured data, can help improve simulation results, however, not in all cases. Latent variable use requires careful consideration to determine if results are better or worse. This report contains the results from Phase 2 of a 3-phase research effort. Phase 1 (Human Factors Survey of Aviation Technical Manuals Phase 1 Report: Manual Development Procedures) of this research effort surveyed the procedures used by five manufacturers to develop maintenance documentation. Several potential human factors issues were identified in the development processes employed by these manufacturers. They included the reactive rather than proactive use of user evaluations, the limited use of user input and procedure validation, no systematic attempts to track error, and the lack of standards for measuring document quality. The modern power system is progressing from a synchronous machine-based system towards an inverter-dominated system, with large-scale penetration of renewable energy sources (RESs) like wind and photovoltaics. RES units today represent a major share of the generation, and the traditional approach of integrating them as grid following units can lead to frequency instability. Many researchers have pointed towards using inverters with virtual inertia control algorithms so that they appear as synchronous generators to the grid, maintaining and enhancing system stability. The recruitment and the retention of female undergraduate and graduate students into engineering courses is discussed. A similar challenge lies in recruiting female faculty member from the limited pool of candidates in several fields at most universities. It is found that about half the females who were hired did not stay at the university. It is suggested that programs should be introduced to encourage mentoring and career development as such improvements would benefit all faculty members both female and male.

A Tale Of Two Airlines: A Comparative Case Study Of High-Road Versus Low-Road Strategies In Customer Service And Reputation Management, Donna L. Roberts Ph.D., John C. Griffith Ph.D.

Does customer service - good or bad - really matter? Customer surveys from Ryanair and Southwest Airline passengers were examined to determine their perceptions on customer service for the period of 2012-2013.  Southwest Airlines (n=149) was rated significantly higher than Ryanair (n=165) in overall rating (p=.0228), seat comfort (p<.0001), cabin/staff service (p<.0001), and value (p=.0004).  Additionally, passengers would recommend Southwest Airlines at a higher rate than Ryanair (p=.0006). Open area comments emphasized that customer service and policies had a large impact on the ratings.  Specifically, 53% of Ryanair customers complained about inefficient or unwelcome processes and discourteous or unfriendly service compared …

The dependence of the asymmetric magnetoimpedance (MI) response on the directions of both the magnetic field and the exchange bias is studied for an [Ni−Fe(60nm)/Ir−Mn(35nm)]×5 multilayer system. The antiferromagnetic (AFM) layers create an exchange bias that shifts both the hysteresis loop and the MI response of Ni−Fe; the strength of this coupling depends on the thicknesses of both the ferromagnetic layer and the AFM layer. Tuning the exchange-bias angle and the applied-magnetic-field direction provides a practical method to control the symmetry and the magnitude of the MI response. This study investigates the applicability and efficiency of support vector machines for the problem of estimating the earthquake response spectra from the Fourier amplitude spectra of the ground motion acceleration. Two methods are commonly used for this purpose: time domain simulations, and the random vibration theory. The use of time domain simulations offers high accuracy at high computational cost, while the use random vibration theory, although not computationally intensive, requires knowledge of the statistical distribution of the response amplitudes. Conventional snow removal strategies add direct and indirect expenses to the economy through profit lost due to passenger delays costs, pavement durability issues, contaminating the water runoff, and so on. The use of superhydrophobic (super-water-repellent) coating methods is an alternative to conventional snow and ice removal practices for alleviating snow removal operations issues. As an integrated experimental and analytical study, this work focused on optimizing superhydrophobicity and skid resistance of hydrophobic coatings on asphalt concrete surfaces.
