Potential Economic Impacts Of Allocating More Land For Bioenergy Biomass Production In Virginia, Thomas O. Ochuodho, Janaki R. R. Alavalapati, Pankaj Lal, Domena A. Agyeman, Bernabas Wolde, Pralhad Burli Oct 2019

Potential Economic Impacts Of Allocating More Land For Bioenergy Biomass Production In Virginia, Thomas O. Ochuodho, Janaki R. R. Alavalapati, Pankaj Lal, Domena A. Agyeman, Bernabas Wolde, Pralhad Burli

Pankaj Lal

The growing attention to renewable energy and rural development has created greater demand for production of biomass feedstock for bioenergy. However, forest growth rates and the amount of land in most existing forests may not be sufficient to sustainably supply the forest biomass required to support existing forest products industries and the expanding bioenergy industry. Additionally, concerns about agricultural land use competition have dampened expansion of biomass production on agricultural land base. One of the ways to meet the growing forest biomass feedstock demand for bioenergy production is by allocating currently marginal non-forested land for growing bioenergy feedstocks. In Virginia, …

Transparent Solar Windows From Labs To Industry, Towards Smart Cities - Encyclopedia- Oct 2019.Pdf, Mohammad Nur-E-Alam, Mikhail Vasiliev, Kamal Alameh

Many modern glass and window products are based on metal-dielectric coatings, which can control properties such as thermal emissivity, heat gain, colour, and transparency. These can also enable solar energy harvesting through PV integration, if the glazing structure is purpose-designed, to include luminescent materials and special microstructures. Recently, significant progress has been demonstrated in building integrated transparent solar windows, which are expected to add momentum towards the development of smart cities. These window systems are, at present in 2019, the only type of transparent and clear construction materials capable of providing significant energy savings in buildings, simultaneously with renewable energy …

Competing Magnetic Phases And Itinerant Magnetic Frustration In Srco2 As2, Bing Li, Benjamin G. Ueland, W. T. Jayasekara, D. L. Abernathy, N. S. Sangeetha, David C. Johnston, Qing-Ping Ding, Yuji Furukawa, Peter P. Orth, Andreas Kreyssig, Alan I. Goldman, Robert J. Mcqueeney Oct 2019

Competing Magnetic Phases And Itinerant Magnetic Frustration In Srco2 As2, Bing Li, Benjamin G. Ueland, W. T. Jayasekara, D. L. Abernathy, N. S. Sangeetha, David C. Johnston, Qing-Ping Ding, Yuji Furukawa, Peter P. Orth, Andreas Kreyssig, Alan I. Goldman, Robert J. Mcqueeney

A. I. Goldman

Whereas magnetic frustration is typically associated with local-moment magnets in special geometric arrangements, here we show that SrCo2As2 is a candidate for frustrated itinerant magnetism. Using inelastic neutron scattering (INS), we find that antiferromagnetic (AF) spin fluctuations develop in the square Co layers of SrCo2As2 below T approximate to 100 K centered at the stripe-type AF propagation vector of (1/2, 1/2), and that their development is concomitant with a suppression of the uniform magnetic susceptibility determined via magnetization measurements. We interpret this switch in spectral weight as signaling a temperature-induced crossover from an instability toward ferromagnetism ordering to an instability …

Adaboost‑Based Security Level Classifcation Of Mobile Intelligent Terminals, Feng Wang, Houbing Song, Dingde Jiang, Hong Wen

Houbing Song

With the rapid development of Internet of Things, massive mobile intelligent terminals are ready to access edge servers for real-time data calculation and interaction. However, the risk of private data leakage follows simultaneously. As the administrator of all intelligent terminals in a region, the edge server needs to clarify the ability of the managed intelligent terminals to defend against malicious attacks. Therefore, the security level classification for mobile intelligent terminals before accessing the network is indispensable. In this paper, we firstly propose a safety assessment method to detect the weakness of mobile intelligent terminals. Secondly, we match the evaluation results …

Pre-Methylation Of Lignin To Improve Storage Stability Of Oil Produced By Solvent Liquefaction, Jae-Young Kim, Parinaz Hafezi-Sefat, Sarah D. Cady, Ryan G. Smith, Robert C. Brown Sep 2019

Pre-Methylation Of Lignin To Improve Storage Stability Of Oil Produced By Solvent Liquefaction, Jae-Young Kim, Parinaz Hafezi-Sefat, Sarah D. Cady, Ryan G. Smith, Robert C. Brown

Sarah Cady

In this study, we methylated hydroxyl groups (phenolic hydroxyl: Phe-OH and aliphatic hydroxyl: Aliph-OH) in soda lignin (SL) prior to solvent liquefaction to improve storage stability of the resulting oil. We investigated two methylating reagents, dimethyl sulfate (DMS) and dimethyl carbonate (DMC), for selective Phe-OH and total hydroxyl group (Phe-OH and Aliph-OH) blocking. Samples of SL, DMS-SL, and DMC-SL were depolymerized into oils under supercritical ethanol (350 °C). Both methylated lignins produced higher amounts of oils and smaller amounts of char compared to untreated SL due to suppressed charring reactions. Oil produced from SL had relatively higher functional group contents …

The Midwestern U.S. landscape is one of the most highly altered and intensively managed ecosystems in the country. The predominant crops grown are maize (Zea mays L.) and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr]. They are typically grown as monocrops in a simple yearly rotation or with multiple years of maize (2 to 3) followed by a single year of soybean. This system is highly productive because the crops and management systems have been well adapted to the regional growing conditions through substantial public and private investment. Furthermore, markets and supporting infrastructure are highly developed for both crops. As maize and …

Thermal Removal Of Carbon Dioxide From The Atmosphere: Energy Requirements And Scaling Issues, Ted Von Hippel Aug 2019

Thermal Removal Of Carbon Dioxide From The Atmosphere: Energy Requirements And Scaling Issues, Ted Von Hippel

Ted von Hippel

I conduct a systems-level study of direct air capture of CO2 using techniques from thermal physics. This system relies on a combination of an efficient heat exchanger, radiative cooling, and refrigeration, all at industrial scale and operated in environments at low ambient temperatures. While technological developments will be required for such a system to operate efficiently, those developments rest on a long history of refrigeration expertise and technology, and they can be developed and tested at modest scale. I estimate that the energy required to remove CO2 via this approach is comparable to direct air capture by other techniques. The …

Shining A Humanistic Light On Racism.Docx

Carroy U "Cuf" Ferguson, Ph.D.

On July 14, 2019, race-linked tweets, filled with racially charged negative rhetoric, began to emerge for a country, the United States, to grapple once more with its past, present, and future.  The tweets were directed toward four duly elected women of color in Congress.  In this light, the phenomenon of racism, yet again, was abruptly made more overt, rather than covert.  Indeed, it is fair to say that the phenomenon of racism is often an "unconscious or veiled phenomenon" for some.

Suppression Of Antiferromagnetic Spin Fluctuations In Superconducting Cr0.8 Ru0.2, M. Ramazanoglu, Benjamin G. Ueland, D. K. Pratt, L. W. Harringer, J. W. Lynn, G. Ehlers, G. E. Granroth, Sergey L. Bud’Ko, Paul C. Canfield, Deborah L. Schlagel, Alan I. Goldman, Thomas A. Lograsso, Robert J. Mcqueeney

A. I. Goldman

Unconventional superconductivity (SC) often develops in magnetic metals on the cusp of static antiferromagnetic (AFM) order where spin fluctuations are strong. This association is so compelling that many SC materials are labeled as unconventional by proximity to an ordered AFM state. The Cr-Ru alloy system possesses such a phase diagram [see Fig. 1(a)]. Here we use inelastic neutron scattering to show that spin fluctuations are present in a SC Cr0.8Ru0.2 alloy (Tc=1.35 K). However, the neutron spin resonance, a possible signature of unconventional SC, is not observed. Instead, data indicate a spin gap of order 2Δ (the superconducting gap) and …

Analysis, Optimization, And Characterization Of Magnetic Photonic Crystal Structures And Thin-Film Material Layers, Mikhail Vasiliev, Kamal Alameh, Mohammad Nur-E-Alam Jul 2019

Analysis, Optimization, And Characterization Of Magnetic Photonic Crystal Structures And Thin-Film Material Layers, Mikhail Vasiliev, Kamal Alameh, Mohammad Nur-E-Alam

Mikhail Vasiliev

The development of magnetic photonic crystals (MPC) has been a rapidly evolving research area since the late 1990s. Magneto-optic (MO) materials and the techniques for their characterization have also continually undergone functional and property-related improvements. MPC optimization is a feature-rich Windows software application designed to enable researchers to analyze the optical and magneto-optical spectral properties of multilayers containing gyrotropic constituents. We report on a set of computational algorithms which aim to optimize the design and the optical or magneto-optical spectral analysis of 1D MPC, together with a Windows software implementation. Relevant material property datasets (e.g., the spectral dispersion data for …

Development Of A Meteorological Sensor Suite For Atmospheric Boundary Layer Measurement Using A Small Multirotor Unmanned Aerial System, Kevin A. Adkins Jun 2019

Development Of A Meteorological Sensor Suite For Atmospheric Boundary Layer Measurement Using A Small Multirotor Unmanned Aerial System, Kevin A. Adkins

Kevin A. Adkins, PhD

Small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS) are increasingly being used to conduct atmospheric research. Because of the dynamic nature and inhomogeneity of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL), the ability of instrumented sUAS to make on-demand 3-dimensional high-resolution spatial measurements of atmospheric parameters makes them particularly suited to ABL investigations. Both fixed-wing and multirotor unmanned aircraft (UA) have been used for ABL investigations. Most investigations to date have included in-situ measurement of scalar quantities such as temperature, pressure and humidity. When wind has been measured, a variety of strategies have been used. Two of the most popular techniques have been deducing wind …

Developing A Workflow To Integrate Tree Inventory Data Into Urban Energy Models, Farzad Hashemi, Breanna L. Marmur, Ulrike Passe, Janette R. Thompson Jun 2019

Developing A Workflow To Integrate Tree Inventory Data Into Urban Energy Models, Farzad Hashemi, Breanna L. Marmur, Ulrike Passe, Janette R. Thompson

Farzad Hashemi

Building energy simulation is of considerable interest and benefit for architects, engineers, and urban planners. Only recently has it become possible to develop integrated energy models for clusters of buildings in urban areas. Simulating energy consumption of the built environment on a relatively large scale (e.g., such as a neighborhood) will be necessary to obtain more reliable results, since building energy parameters are influenced by characteristics of the nearby environment. Therefore, the construction of a 3-D model of urban built areas with detail of the near-building environment should enhance simulation approaches and provide more accurate results. This paper describes the …

Flor Revisited (Again): Eqtl And Mutational Analysis Of Nb-Lrr Mediated Immunity To Powdery Mildew In Barley, Roger P. Wise, Priyanka Surana, Gregory S. Fuerst, Ruo Xu, Divya Mistry, Julie A. Dickerson, Dan Nettleton Dr. Jun 2019

Flor Revisited (Again): Eqtl And Mutational Analysis Of Nb-Lrr Mediated Immunity To Powdery Mildew In Barley, Roger P. Wise, Priyanka Surana, Gregory S. Fuerst, Ruo Xu, Divya Mistry, Julie A. Dickerson, Dan Nettleton Dr.

Dan Nettleton

Genes encoding early signaling events in pathogen defense often are identified only by their phenotype. Such genes involved in barley-powdery mildew interactions include Mla, specifying race-specific resistance; Rar1 (Required for Mla12-specified resistance1), and Rom1 (Restoration of Mla-specified resistance1). The HSP90-SGT1-RAR1 complex appears to function as chaperone in MLA-specified resistance, however, much remains to be discovered regarding the precise signaling underlying plant immunity. Genetic analyses of fast-neutron mutants derived from CI 16151 (Mla6) uncovered a novel locus, designated Rar3 (Required for Mla6-specified resistance3). Rar3 segregates independent of Mla6 and Rar1, and rar3 mutants are susceptible to Blumeria graminis f. sp. hordei …

A Review Of Pesticide Fate And Transport Simulation At Watershed Level Using Swat: Current Status And Research Concerns, Ruoyu Wang Jun 2019

A Review Of Pesticide Fate And Transport Simulation At Watershed Level Using Swat: Current Status And Research Concerns, Ruoyu Wang

Ruoyu Wang

The application of pesticides in agriculture is a widely-used way to alleviate pest stresses. However, it also introduces various environmental concerns due to the offsite movement of pesticide residues towards receiving water bodies. While the application of process-based modeling approaches can provide quantitative information on pesticide exposure, there are nonetheless growing requirements for model development and improvement to better represent various hydrological and physico-chemical conditions at watershed scale, and for better model integration to address environmental, ecological and economic concerns. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) is an ecohydrological model used in over 3,000 published studies, including about 50 …

This special issue of the Journal of Air Transport Studies has drawn upon all of this material to present four papers that promote improvements …

Nitrate Runoff Contributing From The Agriculturally Intensive San Joaquin River Watershed To Bay-Delta In California, Ruoyu Wang May 2019

Nitrate Runoff Contributing From The Agriculturally Intensive San Joaquin River Watershed To Bay-Delta In California, Ruoyu Wang

Ruoyu Wang

Nitrogen loading from agricultural landscapes can trigger a cascade of detrimental e#11;ects on
aquatic ecosystems. Recently, the spread of aquatic weed infestations (Eichhornia crassipes, Egeria densa,
Ludwigia spp., and Onagraceae) in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta of northern California has raised
concerns, and nitrogen loading from California’s intensive farming regions is considered as one of
the major contributors. In this study, we employed the Soil andWater Assessment Tool (SWAT) to
simulate nitrogen exports from the agriculturally intensive San Joaquin River watershed to the Delta.
The alternate tile drainage routine in SWAT was tested against monitoring data in the tile-drained area
of …

Vitor Martins

The water vapor is a relevant greenhouse gas in the Earth's climate system, and satellite products become one of the most effective way to characterize and monitor the columnar water vapor (CWV) content at global scale. Recently, a new product (MCD19) was released as part of MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) Collection 6 (C6). This operational product from Multi-Angle Implementation for Atmospheric Correction (MAIAC) algorithm includes a high 1 km resolution CWV retrievals. This study presents the first global validation of MAIAC C6 CWV obtained from MODIS MCD19A2 product. This evaluation was performed using Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) observations at …

Validation Of High‐Resolution Maiac Aerosol Product Over South America, Vitor S. Martins, Alexei Lyapustin, Lino A.S. De Carvalho, Claudio C.F. Barbosa, Evlyn M.L.M. Novo

Vitor Martins

Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) algorithm that combines time series approach and image processing to derive surface reflectance and atmosphere products, such as aerosol optical depth (AOD) and columnar water vapor (CWV). The quality assessment of MAIAC AOD at 1 km resolution is still lacking across South America. In the present study, critical assessment of MAIAC AOD550 was performed using ground‐truth data from 19 Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) sites over South America. Additionally, we validated the MAIAC CWV retrievals using the same AERONET sites. In general, MAIAC AOD Terra/Aqua retrievals show high agreement with ground‐based measurements, with a correlation coefficient …

Seasonal And Interannual Assessment Of Cloud Cover And Atmospheric Constituents Across The Amazon (2000–2015): Insights For Remote Sensing And Climate Analysis, Vitor S. Martins, Evlyn M.L.M. Novo, Alexei Lyapustin, Luiz E.O.C. Aragão, Saulo R. Freitas, Claudio C.F. Barbosa May 2019

Seasonal And Interannual Assessment Of Cloud Cover And Atmospheric Constituents Across The Amazon (2000–2015): Insights For Remote Sensing And Climate Analysis, Vitor S. Martins, Evlyn M.L.M. Novo, Alexei Lyapustin, Luiz E.O.C. Aragão, Saulo R. Freitas, Claudio C.F. Barbosa

Vitor Martins

The quantitative assessment of cloud cover and atmospheric constituents improves our ability to exploit the climate feedback into the Amazon basin. In the 21st century, three droughts have already occurred in the Amazonia (e.g. 2005, 2010, 2015), inducing regional changes in the seasonal patterns of atmospheric constituents. In addition to climate, the atmospheric dynamic and attenuation properties are long-term challenges for satellite-based remote sensing of this ecosystem: high cloudiness, abundant water vapor content and biomass burning season. Therefore, while climatology analysis supports the understanding of atmospheric variability and trends, it also offers valuable insights for remote sensing applications. In this …

Environmental Fate And Impact Assessment Of Thiobencarb Application In California Rice Fields Using Ricewq, Ruoyu Wang May 2019

Environmental Fate And Impact Assessment Of Thiobencarb Application In California Rice Fields Using Ricewq, Ruoyu Wang

Ruoyu Wang

Thiobencarb is a commonly used herbicide in Northern California rice fields. Released paddy water containing thiobencarb may pose ecological risks to non-targeted organisms. In this research, the Rice Water Quality Model (RICEWQ) is  equilibrium tested and then calibrated using monitoring data at field level. Then it is employed to assess the environmental fate and impacts of thiobencarb in the Colusa Basin, and the effects of different management practices on water use and thiobencarb exposures. The model predicted thiobencarb concentrations from rice fields for multiple years throughout the Basin, using input from California Pesticide Use Reporting (PUR) database, and assessed both the …

Integrating Mathematics And Educational Robotics: Simple Motion Planning, Ronald I. Greenberg, George K. Thiruvathukal, Sara T. Greenberg

George K. Thiruvathukal

This paper shows how students can be guided to integrate elementary mathematical analyses with motion planning for typical educational robots. Rather than using calculus as in comprehensive works on motion planning, we show students can achieve interesting results using just simple linear regression tools and trigonometric analyses. Experiments with one robotics platform show that use of these tools can lead to passable navigation through dead reckoning even if students have limited experience with use of sensors, programming, and mathematics.

General Aviation Weather Encounter Case Studies, John M. Lanicci, Massoud Bazargan, Daniel Halperin, Scott Shappell, Jaclyn Baron, Rebecca Iden, Carla Hackworth, Kali Holcomb

Scott Shappell

This study presents a compilation of 24 cases involving general aviation (GA) pilots’ weather encounters over the continental U.S. The project team interviewed pilots who had experienced a weather encounter, and we examined their backgrounds, flight experience, and weather encounter details. Results from meteorological data analysis for each weather encounter were consistent with findings of larger GA weather accident studies in terms of the types of hazards encountered and flight phase during which the encounters occurred. Investigation of pilot weather products and the sources from which they were obtained revealed a lack of uniformity of pre-flight data sources and underutilization …

The Impact Of Trees On Passive Survivability During Extreme Heat Events In Warm And Humid Regions, Ulrike Passe, Janette R. Thompson, Baskar Ganapathysubramanian, Boshun Gao, Breanna L. Marmur Apr 2019

The Impact Of Trees On Passive Survivability During Extreme Heat Events In Warm And Humid Regions, Ulrike Passe, Janette R. Thompson, Baskar Ganapathysubramanian, Boshun Gao, Breanna L. Marmur

Breanna L. Marmur

Communities are increasingly affected by excessive heat. The likelihood of extreme heat events is predicted to increase in the Midwest region of the United States. By mid-century (2036–2065), one year out of 10 is projected to have a 5-day period that is 13°F warmer than a comparable earlier period (1976–2005). The frequency of high humidity/dew point days (“extra moist tropical air mass days,” MT++ synoptic climate classification system) has also increased significantly during a similar period (1975–2010) and between 2010 and 2014 included 8 of 26 heat events. This impact is exacerbated by the fact that many residences in low-income …
