Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has discovered and documented failures in several cantilever mast arms in the recent years. The failures were primarily by fatigue at the weld of the arm to the base plate attached to the mast. With over 6000 mast arms in service in Missouri, the failures raised concerns with the existing mast arm inventory and future mast arm design. This report presents findings from an effort to determine the cause of unexpected cracking in Missouri mast arms. Three causes of premature failure were investigated: the stress ranges experienced at the weld detail were higher than …

Makara Journal of Technology

Phase composition analysis using rietveld methode and it’s influence to the hardness of Ti-Si-N nanocomposites. XRD data of nanocomposites Ti-Si-N have been analysed using GSAS based on Rietveld Method in order to identify phases and their composition as well as its influence on the hardness of these nanocomposites. Several new phases have been found in the sample beside the nc-TiN/a-Si3N4& a-/nc-TiSi2 that have been known widely. From the obtained crystalline phase, after the calculation of amorf Si3N4 and TiSi2 phase fraction, it is found that the optimum hardness can be reached when the fraction of a-Si3N4 phase around 8 wt.%

Testing Of Steel Single L-Headers, Nahb Research Center

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

The purpose of this test report is to substantiate a more cost-competitive alternative to “box beam” and “back-to-back” headers by expanding upon the Lheader testing program that was previously conducted at the NAHB Research Center, Inc. Previous testing of double L-shaped headers indicated that these headers could be a viable alternative to the existing box-beam or back-to-back headers in lightly loaded applications. The higher capacity of the previously tested L-headers was mainly due to the fact that there is an added benefit from the top track that may be neglected in the design process. However, the application of these previous …

The Behaviour Of Long-Span Reinforced Concrete Beams Under Various Loading Conditions., Ciaran O'Leary Jan 2003

The Behaviour Of Long-Span Reinforced Concrete Beams Under Various Loading Conditions., Ciaran O'Leary

Theses

The relative ease of design and construction of simple reinforced concrete beams provides an attractive option for structural engineering designers. However, where longer spans are involved it is more likely that prestressed concrete or possibly some form of steel beams will be preferred.

The primary cause of failure of longer span reinforced concrete beams is likely to be bending. However, the excessive deflection that might be associated with such beams must also be considered. When designing these beams, structural engineers make considerable use of span/effective depth ratios to select trial sections and check deflection limits. Such ratios are provided in …
