Low Vision, Stimulus Encoding And Information Processing: A Characterization Of Performance Of Partially Sighted Users On Computer-Based Tasks, Max A. Dixon

This study focuses on the characterization of partially sighted users' performance within a graphical user interface environment. Participants, ranging in visual abilities from fully sighted (FSU) with no visual impairments to partially sighted (PSU) with limited visual abilities, participated in computer-based search and select tasks. It is shown that visual search strategies employed by both PSU and FSU within a graphical user interface can be described by Steinberg's (1969) Additive Factor Model. In addition, selection strategies, measured by mouse movement times, are linearly related and highly correlated to the Index of Difficulty as explained by Fitts' Law. This is the …

A manufacturing process for an optical fiber ferrule mold insert with twelve channels has been established. This research project presents mask design, mask fabrication, deep X-ray lithography exposure, resist developing, nickel electroforming, as well as surface finishing to attain the final result. Deep X-ray mask fabrication methods are explored, including mechanically machined masks, micro-EDM masks, and E-beam written masks. The exposures to pattern resists and electroforming to fabricate nickel molds up to 500 $\mu$m thickness are reported in this study. A gap exists between theoretical stances that acknowledge the importance of dialogue as a dynamic within socially constructed structures, and "steersmanship" of those constructs--e.g., directing, intervening or transforming organizations. A "mechanism" which links theory with practice is missing, leaving practitioners with an acknowledgment of dialogue's central position, but without tools to enact this centrality in practice or research. This research constructs a conceptual model of dialogue, derived from the literature. This paper presents a study on a combination lift and carrying task and was designed to simulate a metal pouring operation commonly found in foundries. Two laboratory experiments were conducted. The first experiment was designed to study the effects of two different mold heights (0.6096 m. and 0.4572 m.) and two carrying distances (1.2192 m. and 4.572 m.) on physiological response variables and on subjects' rating of perceived exertion while performing a simulated pouring operation at a documented foundry frequency. The Cassini spacecraft is on its journey to Saturn to perform a close-up study of the Saturnian system; its rings, moons, magneto-sphere, and the planet itself. Sequences of commands will be sent to the spacecraft by ground personnel to control every aspect of the mission. To validate and verify these command sequences, a bit-level, high-speed simulator (HSS) has been developed. To maximize performance, the HSS is implemented with multiple threads and runs on a multiprocessor system. A key component of the HSS is the scheduler, which controls the execution of the simulator. In recent years, there has been significant attention given to improved methods and tools for engineering design. While advances for the latter stages of design have been impressive, this has not been the case for the early stages of design. In general, advances have provided for either a top-down or a bottom-up approach to design; ignoring the requirements for both abstraction and detail in a concurrently engineered development process. This paper describes an integrated conceptual modeling framework for a blended methodology. The utility and extensibility of this framework are considered in discussion and by way of examples.

Considering the principles of concurrent engineering, a Decision Support System (DSS) is developed to aid in the equipment selection of robotic manufacturing cells. The objective is to synchronously and simultaneously select proper equipment for the cell to provide efficient performance, subject to operational and budgetary constraints.

An interface program was designed to transfer production data from MAPICS/DB, a MRP II software, to FACTOR 5.2, a Finite Capacity Scheduling software. Since FACTOR 5.2 is designed to be used in a stand-alone mode with its own independent data base, this interface program extracts data from the MRP II System and converts it to formats specified by the Scheduling System. Assembly type job-shop scheduling is a generalization of the job-shop scheduling problem to include assembly operations. In the assembly type job-shops scheduling problem, there are n jobs which are to be processed on in workstations and each job has a due date. Each job visits one or more workstations in a predetermined route. The effects of test parameters on the corrosion fatigue crack growth behavior of structural materials have been examined in this paper. Test parameters such as stress ratio, frequency, hold time, temperature, pH level of the media, and other parameters are known to alter the corrosion fatigue crack growth rates in structural materials. This paper presents a review of the state of the art developments in the pitting corrosion fatigue of aircraft structural materials. Mechanisms that govern the nucleation and growth of pitting and corrosion fatigue (CF) are briefly addressed. Some of the developments made in the author's laboratories in proposing the fretting induced pit nucleation and growth mechanisms, analysis of the hidden corrosion constituents in fuselage joints and pitting corrosion fatigue crack growth (PCFCG) model are elucidated. An epistemology of the topic is presented which will be of assistance to the community working in this area.

One effective technique for improving manufacturing efficiency involves the application of group technology part families and manufacturing cells. Selection of the best or optimum configuration of the manufacturing cell relies on the experience and judgment of the cell designer. This paper describes how activity-based costing (ABC) concepts can be integrated into a discrete-event simulation model and be used to evaluate manufacturing cell configurations. The mission of the Cassini spacecraft is a unique opportunity to gain insights into major scientific questions about Saturn, the creation of the solar system, and the conditions that led to life on Earth. In preparation for the launch, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory developed a software simulator to emulate the hardware data-control system of the spacecraft. Its primary use is to validate and verify commands that will be transmitted to the spacecraft. Many industries have recently implemented programs to detect and deter the use of recreational drugs in the workplace. The transportation industry has received careful government attention, particularly where the safety of the public may be seriously affected by employees who use drugs. Following federal guidelines, Union Pacific Railroad first implemented a random drug-testing plan in 1990. We develop a formal method for specifying an aggregate discrete-event simulation model of a production flow line manufacturing system. The methodology operates by aggregating production stations or resources of a flow line. Determining the specifications for representing the aggregated resources in a simulation model is the focus of our presentation. We test the methodology for a set of flow lines with exponentially distributed arrival and service times. Comparisons between analytical and simulation results indicate the aggregation approach is quite accurate for estimating average part cycle time.

The dwell sensitivity fatigue behavior of six high temperature materials is examined in this paper: two stainless steels, 304L and 304, two tantalum alloys, Τ- Ι 11 and ASTAR 811C, pure nickel Ni 201 and a single crystal nickel-base superalloy, PWA 1480. The stainless steel alloys were found to be tensile dwell sensitive; however, a saturation in dwell sensitivity was found with the increase in strain range for all materials examined. At lower strain ranges the dwell cycles were producing lower lives than at higher strains, as found in the case of AISI SS 304 and two tantalum based alloys, …

Creep-fatigue data on low alloy steels were collected from National Research Institute for Metals (NRIM) Tokyo, Japan. These data were generated for lCr-Mo-V, 2.25Cr-Mo, and 9Cr-lMo steels under a wide range of test conditions. A new creep-fatigue life prediction method was developed and data compiled were assessed to examine the applicability of the new method. A brief review of the empirically based, phenomenological life prediction methods was presented where no method was found to be applicable universally to all the creep-fatigue data.
