This dissertation investigates digital controller and switch mode power supply design for super high-speed permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM). The PMSMs are a key component for the miniaturic cryocooler that is currently under development at the University of Central Florida with support from NASA Kennedy Space Center and the Florida Solar Energy Center. Embedded systems incur tight constraints on power consumption and memory (which impacts size) in addition to other constraints such as weight and cost. This dissertation addresses two key factors in embedded system design, namely minimization of power consumption and memory requirement. The first part of this dissertation considers the problem of optimizing power consumption (peak power as well as average power) in high-level synthesis (HLS). This work provides extensions of a standard D-Cam/Firewire digital camera platform for use within a multispectral imaging setting and includes real-time lossless image compression targeted at the re-configurable environment of an FPGA. The control and image acquisition structures specific to multispectral systems are detailed with respect to an embedded firmware solution, complementary host PC software driver routines, and camera hardware control infrastructures. This project discusses a microprocessor controlled illumination system that covers the visible spectrum. It uses multiple discrete wavelength LEDs. Spatial and spectral illumination profiles are achieved by controlling LED currents with an array of voltage controlled current sources. A highly efficient polycarbonate holographic diffuser is used to improve the uniformity of the distribution. System design is underpinned by accurate characterisation and modelling of the LEDs used.

High speed, medium resolution ADC’s, are required for many applications, including wireless receivers, ultrasound systems, wireline interfaces, cameras and camcorders. Low power dissipation is important, particularly for portable equipment where battery life must be maximised. The pipeline ADC architecture is particularly suited to such applications. Its strength comes from the manner in which it performs a conversion, distributing the work in time and amongst successive stages. These stages operate concurrently, maintaining high throughput. A design which uses bistable beams to modulate light is suggested in this thesis and appropriate processing techniques are presented. A beam when placed under compression above the Euler limit has two stable states. The compression in an electroplated beam can be controlled by the plating current density of nickel during electrodeposition. This beam is attached to an electromechanical comb. Voltages applied to the combs cause the beam to snap from one stable state to another. Current leakage in GaN thin films limits reliable device fabrication. A variety of Ga and N rich MBE GaN thin films grown by Rf, NH3, and Rf+ NH3, are examined with electrical measurements on NiIAu Schottky diodes and CAFM. Current-voltage (IV) mechanisms will identify conduction mechanisms on diodes, and CAFM measurements will investigate the microstructure of conduction in GaN thin films. With CAFM, enhanced conduction has been shown to decorate some extended defects and surface features, while CAFM spectroscopy on a MODFET structure indicates a correlation between extended defects and field conduction behavior at room temperature. In this work Scanning Kelvin Probe Microscopy (SKPM) was used to characterize surface states and device surface charging in nitride materials. Samples grown by Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE), Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) and Hydride Vapor Phase Epitaxy (HVPE) typically show a high surface band bending of about 1 eV. In an n-type sample with 3X1017 cm-3 carrier concentration, 1 eV upward band bending corresponds to 1.7X1012 cm-2 trapped charge density in the surface states. Under continuous ultraviolet (UV) illumination up to 0.6 eV surface photo voltage effect could be observed in some samples, which further indicates that surface …

This dissertation focuses on providing solutions to two of the most important problems in wireless communication systems design, namely, 1) the interference suppression, and 2) the channel parameter estimation in wireless communication systems over time-varying multipath fading channels. We first study the interference suppression problem in various communication systems under a unified multirate transmultiplexer model. A state-space approach that achieves the optimal realizable equalization (suppression of inter-symbol interference) is proposed, where the Kalman filter is applied to obtain the minimum mean squared error estimate of the transmitted symbols. PROGRAMMABLE DECIMATOR FOR SIGMA-DELTA ANALOG-TO-DIGITAL CONVERTER: In this work a programmable decimator design has been presented in 1.5 μm n-well CMOS process for integration with an existing modulator to form a sigma-delta analog-to-digital converter (ADC). The decimator is implemented using a second order Cascaded Integrator Comb (CIC) filter and can be programmed to work with two different oversampling ratios of 64 and 16. The input to the decimator is provided from a first order modulator. With oversampling ratios of 64 and 16, an output resolution of 10-bit and 7-bit, respectively are achieved for the ADC. Organic thin film transistors have the potential to replace silicon based transistors in applications such as smart cards and RF-ID due to their low cost and low processing temperatures. Thermally evaporated pentacene is studied as an organic thin film material. Thin film transistors were fabricated in bottom contact structure using thermal evaporation of pentacene at a rate of 0.5 to 1 nm/s. The mapping aims to reduce the number and cost of optical components, by exploiting the fact that not all edges of a weak topology are used simultaneously. This thesis improves upon the work carried out by Mandhani on decimal sequence watermarking showing that the embedding and decoding algorithms used by Mandhani are not robust. We next specify improvements to these algorithms so that the peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) is maximized and the distortion introduced in the image due to the embedding is minimized. By exploiting the cross correlation property of decimal sequences, the concept of embedding more than one watermark in the same cover image has been investigated. A comparison between the PSNRs for decimal sequence watermarking and other pseudorandom sequences has been made.

In this thesis, a new robust noise spectral estimation algorithm is proposed for the purpose of single-microphone speech enhancement. This algorithm can generate the optimal noise spectral estimates in the Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) sense based on the speech statistics in the noisy environments. Compared to the well-adopted conventional noise spectral estimation method using the single-pole recursion, our proposed scheme is more reliable since the recursion coefficients are adaptable and optimal in the MMSE therein.
