Medical school faculty must foster high-quality patient care while simultaneously assessing the clinical skills and reasoning of students in order to promote their independent functioning in the clinical setting. A growing concern noted across medical faculty is that students may complete their undergraduate medical studies without sufficient understanding of how simple clinical tasks are done with real patients. These concerns have been validated by results from numerous studies that have reported many medical students express a lack of confidence and competence to critically evaluate patient needs based on data, a factor that has been linked to problems in performance and …

The Church: A Salient Support System For African-American College Students, Odelet Nance
Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development
This article builds on a previous qualitative study examining the role of religion in the lives of five African-American college students at a Predominately White Institution (PWI). Through a constructivist lens, the stories of first-year students revealed how their church informed their college experiences. This article describes how churches provided support for students through the theoretical frameworks illustrated by Alexander Astin, Jacqueline Mattis, and Robert Jagers. Churches and Predominately White Institutions are encouraged to form partnerships to strengthen and enhance support systems for African-American college students.
Research has shown that having an effective support system affects social and academic integration …
Mixed-Method Analyses Of Federal Court Decisions During 1980-2007 Involving Race And Sex Discrimination Under Title Vii Of The Civil Rights Act Of 1964 And Faculty Tenure Denial Decisions In Higher Education, Jannifer Crittendon
Dissertations
Purpose
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 has become the foundation of modem federal equal employment opportunity law. The application of this law to adverse tenure decisions, however, may differ from other adverse employment decisions because of judicial deference toward institutions of higher education. This present study analyzed published federal court cases decided during the period 1980-2007 involving Title VII, tenure denial, and higher education. This will contribute to understandings of the relationship between federal courts, faculty, and higher education by analyzing the extent of a statistical association between case and/or plaintiff characteristics and case outcomes; and isolating those institutional …
Japanese International Graduate Students In U.S. Higher Education Classrooms: An Investigation Of Their Pedagogical And Epistemological Challenges And Supports, Miki Yamashita
Dissertations and Theses
International students have long been an important part of the U.S. higher education community, but generally they have received inadequate attention in the classroom. Also, American teaching and learning strategies have not taken full advantage of international diversity. The purpose of this narrative study was to qualitatively understand the experiences of Japanese graduate students in U.S. higher education classrooms. The study highlights the challenges that Japanese graduate students faced due to cultural differences, pedagogical differences, and language problems and provides a number of suggestions for faculty, domestic students, and institutions to help create a more welcoming environment for Japanese graduate …
Emergence Of Strategic Human Resource Management Historical Perspective, Nadeem Malik
Emergence Of Strategic Human Resource Management Historical Perspective, Nadeem Malik
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
Organization today, by necessity have become more focused on exploiting sources of competitive advantage in the face of rapid environmental, technological and global economic changes. According to Pfeffer (1994:14), as other sources of competitive success have become less important, what remains a crucial, differentiating factor is the organization, its employees and how they work. Additionally, he states that the current recognition among strategic management researchers is that sustained competitive advantage arises more from a firms internal resource endowments and resource deployments particularly its human capital that are imperfectly imitable than from a firm’s product market position. These “people” issues used …

College is a time of major transition for young adults. It presents a unique opportunity as decisions regarding a wide variety of options unfold for the first time without being under the guidance and eye of a guardian. Chosen paths offer a glimpse into the inner motivations behind one’s character and the interest that many students have shown for peer mentoring exemplifies traits of benevolence and leadership. In addition to providing peers with a positive role model, there are opportunities for mentors to expand on many interpersonal qualities that are important for success in a multitude of contexts. Integral to …

Teacher Expectations And Urban Black Males’ Success In School: Implications For Academic Leaders, Terrell Strayhorn
Teacher Expectations And Urban Black Males’ Success In School: Implications For Academic Leaders, Terrell Strayhorn
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
Over 50 years after Brown vs. Board of Education, the American educational system is fraught with separate and unequal opportunities for historically underrepresented and underserved populations. However, unlike the 1950s when race was the single most important predictor of educational disparities, most contemporary scholars agree that it is a convergence of multiple factors that shapes the circumstances in which America’s neediest students exist. For example, in 2005 (the most recent year in which data are available), women represented the majority of college entrants at 2- and 4-year institutions. Yet, African American women represented a smaller proportion of the total population …

Fuzzy And Research Paradigms Relationship: A Mutual Contribution, Devood Salmani, Mohsen Akbari
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
Fuzzy sets were introduced by Zadeh in 1965 to represent manipulate data and information possessing non-statistical uncertainties. It was specifically designed to mathematically represent uncertainty and vagueness and to provide formalized tools for dealing with the imprecision intrinsic to many problems. However, the story of fuzzy logic started much earlier. Fuzzy system is an alternative to traditional notions of set membership and logic that has its origins in ancient Greek philosophy. Research paradigms are rooted in philosophy paradigm, determine the direction of researches; how the researches reach to the reality, how they answer the questions of the seeking mind … …

A Global Perspective On Andragogy: An Update, John A. Henschke Edd
IACE Hall of Fame Repository
Andragogy has received mixed reviews in the past. Some have analyzed in from a positive perspective. Some have analyzed it from a negative perspective, and some have ignored it altogether. Most of the discussions have limited their observations to how Malcolm S. Knowles addressed andragogy. There has been an inadequate investigation of the foundation and background of andragogy from a world perspective. This research presents 240 major works published in English from national and international sources on andragogy that may help provide a clear and understandable international foundation for the linkage between the research, theory, and practice of andragogy. Six …

Mystic Inspiration Of Effective Habits?, Dennis Mcdougall, Rhonda S. Black, Garnett J. Smith, James Skouge
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
Although numerous and diverse publications address professors’ writing and research productivity, exceedingly few empirical studies report findings for interventions designed and implemented to increase professors’ research productivity. This study used an innovative mixed methods design with a concurrent triangulation strategy and methods from two research traditions that investigators rarely integrate – quantitative single-case interventions and qualitative inquiry. Processes and findings from this study illustrate how researchers can combine these methods to illuminate the how and why of changes in performance in participant-interventionist studies. In this study, university professors used goal setting and behavioral self-management techniques to increase their daily research …
Critical Thought Analysis: Bridging The Gap Between Academia And Business, Heidi Gregory-Mina
Critical Thought Analysis: Bridging The Gap Between Academia And Business, Heidi Gregory-Mina
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
Critical thought has been taught to students in varying degrees over the years, but employers believe that critical thinking skills are still lacking in employees (Braun 2004). Some of the barriers between employer expectations and academia concerning critical thought arise from a lack of congruity regarding the meaning of critical thought. However, nearly all researchers agree teaching critical thinking skills is a desirable aim of education (Hemming, 2000). According to Cheung (2002), critical thinking covers four dimensions: (1) cognitive, (2) motivational, (3) ideological, and (4) behavioral. However, other definitions of critical thought range from critical thinking originating from the left …

Additions Toward A Thorough Understanding Of The International Foundations Of Andragogy In Hrd & Adult Education, John A. Henschke Edd
IACE Hall of Fame Repository
More than 225 major works published in English from national and international sources on andragogy are presented here, in order to provide a clear and understandable, international foundation for the linkage between the research, theory and practice of andragogy and its application to Adult Education and Human Resource Development. Six themes have emerged that provide a foundation for the linkage. The evolution of the term: historical antecedents shaping the concept; comparison of American and European understanding; popularizing and sustaining the American and world-wide concept; practical applications; and theory, research, and definition.

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
Technological, demographic, and competitive changes in distance education (DE) pose complex leadership and strategic issues for community colleges. Leaders must establish institutional and academic objectives, develop financial and technological strategies, and organize, market, and evaluate DE initiatives. Their objectives and strategies should anticipate and help shape the developing competitive environment in which their colleges operate. This qualitative case study examined DE administrative and staff leadership roles, organization structures, and strategies at three Midwestern community colleges with expanding DE programs. Leadership teams were small. New roles and organizational structures were evolving, and the colleges were maintaining strong video delivery while developing …

Marriage, Children, And Aging Parents: The Role Of Family-Related Factors In Faculty Job Satifsfaction, Linda Serra Hagedorn, Linda J. Sax
Linda Serra Hagedorn
Due to changes in the academic market, faculty job satisfaction is especially critical. Using a multi-step framework, this study explores the role of family and stress related “pull factors” on a measure of overall job satisfaction for a large nationally representative sample of college and university faculty members. These “pull factors” include, but are not limited to, care for a child, spouse or elder, as well as other responsibilities and duties not directly related to one’s academic career.

Assessing Spiritual Development In Business Students: Lessons Learned And A Suggested Process, Monty Lynn, Tim C. Coburn, J. Vincent Swinney, Michael Winegeart
Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development
As Christian higher education institutions increasingly engage in continuous quality improvement and outcome measurement, research on spiritual development is filtering down to undergraduate business programs. This paper presents lessons learned from a pilot cross-sectional survey of Abilene Christian University undergraduate business students who completed the Faith Maturity Scale (Benson, Donahue & Erickson, 1993) and responded to other questions about faith development. Based on the results, a number of helpful observations were made for the ACU business program. A method and process for assessing spiritual development at multiple Christian colleges is proposed.
A Study Of The Leadership Preparedness Of U.S. Public University Chief Business Officers, Daniel J. Hurley
A Study Of The Leadership Preparedness Of U.S. Public University Chief Business Officers, Daniel J. Hurley
Dissertations
Despite the enormous role that Chief Business Officers (CBOs) play in administering the business and financial affairs of American public universities, little research has been conducted on their leadership preparedness. The primary objectives of this study were to assess the self-perceived preparedness of U.S. public university CBOs at the time they assumed their first position in the role, and to determine if specific factors could be associated with their overall preparedness.
With support from the National Association of College and University Business Officers, a survey was developed and mailed to the entire population of CBOs at four-year public universities in …
Meanings Underlying Student Ratings Of Faculty, Carolyn Ridenour, Stephen J. Blatt
Meanings Underlying Student Ratings Of Faculty, Carolyn Ridenour, Stephen J. Blatt
Educational Leadership Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to examine how undergraduate students interpret the items on a faculty evaluation instrument. Most research on faculty evaluation is quantitative (Marsh and Bailey 1993). Our first study was also quantitative. After we produced a profile of quantitative ratings of faculty by students across all departments in our university in an earlier study, we wanted to go beneath the numbers to their meaning. We designed the present qualitative study to investigate what the items on that form meant to students.

The purpose of this study was to rate the significance of selected factors that influence college choice for first-year students who chose to attend, during fall, 1994, 1 of 10 American liberal arts colleges and universities associated with the Churches of Christ. This study further evaluated the relationship of the rating of these factors with specific student demographic data and the timing of the college choice decision.
Completed surveys were received from 2,677 respondents representing 76% rate of return. According to the results, the most influential college choice factors were the college's religious affiliation, academic reputation, job placement reputation, offer …

Study Of A Contemporary Effort To Build A Prototype College In Suburbia, Samual Patrick Kelly
Park Forest
This case study covers the first stages of a contemporary effort by a group of citizens to plan and thereby satisfy certain educational needs of those outlying communities of Chicago collectively known as "south suburbia". The college is intended to serve not only the local locale but also to serve as a prototype for similar institutions in other sub-metropolitan areas. The study was undertaken with the expectation that a detailed, analytic attempt at an examination of a particular attempt to meet needs for higher education would illuminate a number of conditions affecting the establishment and operation of higher institutions of …
