Quality Roundtable 2017_Frederick_24 _Proof.Pdf, Theresa Frederick

Terry Frederick

Aurora Health Care’s strategic priorities include quality, patient experience, and caregiver/provider engagement. Because literature shows burnout is directly linked to lower patient satisfaction scores, higher physician/staff turnover, and increased physician alcohol and drug abuse, the team focused their project on addressing burnout by reducing time primary care physicians spend on indirect patient care. We defined “indirect patient care” as time spent by the physician on tasks outside the patient encounter including chart preparation, sorting of the inbox, and ordering tests. Additional time on administrative tasks is often cited as the primary reason physicians leave a practice. The provider in our …

Massive Open Online Courses: Integrating Open Source Technology And Open Access Literature Into Technology Based Degrees, Maurice Dawson, Sharon Burton, Dustin Bessette, Jorja Wright

Maurice Dawson

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are a new phenomenon of course delivery for students, faculty, and administrators to use.  As this technology continues to grow in the short term it is essential to develop a method in which Open Source Software (OSS), open source technologies, and open access literature can be incorporated to strengthen the MOOC environment. Strengthening the MOOC environment can be used as a method to increase retention as well as increase enrollment in higher education.  As Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programs are going online it is imperative that the tools meet the demands of today’s …

The Practice Of Being A Student: Cops And Graduate Student Success, Aimee Dechambeau Dec 2016

The Practice Of Being A Student: Cops And Graduate Student Success, Aimee Dechambeau

Aimée L. deChambeau

This report frames the major results of recent research into graduate student success using a community of practice model based on the work of Jean Lave and Etienne Wenger as the organizational framework and lens for analyzing collected data. The goal was to determine if a community of practice developed among doctoral students and if so, whether it aided the students in their role and practice of becoming, and being, successful students. An examination of the first eight doctoral cohorts in a hybrid low-residency, self-directed graduate education program determined that student CoPs can develop to support students’ success in the …

Understanding The Completion Patterns Of Equity Students In Regional Universitites, Karen Nelson, Catherine Picton, Julie Mcmillan, Daniel Edwards, Marcia Devlin, Kerry Martin

Dr Daniel Edwards

Regional universities play an important role in sustaining dynamic regional communities and contributing to regional and national economic prosperity. Regional universities make critical contributions to national imperatives to increase the participation of groups who are underrepresented in higher education and to enable the populations of regional and remote Australia to reach parity in terms of access to and attainment of a higher education qualification. In these ways, regional universities contribute to Australia’s knowledge-driven economy by providing regional populations with the opportunity to participate in higher education in order to take on and create the jobs of the future in regional …

Afterword, Kelly Heider Dec 2016

Afterword, Kelly Heider

Kelly Heider

Service-learning pedagogy, whether traditional or critical, provides early childhood students and teachers with the opportunity to engage with the community ina “real-world” context. The result is a “deeper commitment to communities, better preparation for careers, improved conflict management, and greater understanding of community problems” (Deans 2000, p. 4). Early childhood educators who are currently employing service-learning pedagogy should consider moving to a critical approach that encourages students to examine themselves and their value systems in relation to social justice issues around the world. By doing so, “classrooms can be places of hope, where students and teachers gain glimpses of …

Service Learning As Pedagogy In Early Childhood Education: Theory, Research, And Practice, Kelly Heider

Kelly Heider

This book presents the most recent theory, research, and practice on service learning as it relates to early childhood education. It describes several service learning programs, many of which were developed to better prepare pre-service teachers for the challenges they face in today’s early childhood classrooms, including class size, ever-changing technology, diversity, high-stakes testing, parental involvement (or the lack thereof), and shrinking budgets. The book shares stories of positive outcomes from pre-service teachers who, having participated in service-learning programs, report a shift in their attitudes and beliefs including an increased empathy for others, a heightened sensitivity to student differences, more …

Using Whole School Cluster Grouping To Differentiate Instruction More Effectively In Elementary Schools, Crystal Machado Dec 2016

Using Whole School Cluster Grouping To Differentiate Instruction More Effectively In Elementary Schools, Crystal Machado

Crystal Machado

Given the wide range of ability (academic, linguistic and cultural) in classrooms differentiated instruction is often difficult to manage. District and building level leadership can play an important role by providing the vision and support needed to implement Whole School Cluster Grouping (WSCG), the innovative scheduling approach described in this paper. This paper describes the wide variation in grouping practices across schools and the challenges that continue to exist when differentiated instruction is not managed with fidelity. It then describes how WSCG, a scheduling approach that was developed to serve gifted students, can be used to provide the "good stuff' …

Proethica: Advancing Teacher Candidate Ethics Assessment From Theory To Practice In Christian Contexts, Samuel J. Smith, Harvey Klamm, Stacey L. Bose

Samuel James Smith

In recent decades, accreditation standards have required teacher education programs to establish and implement dispositions that define and assess the demonstration of affective beliefs and values integrated within the teacher preparation process.  The 2015 publication of the Model Code of Ethics for Educators (MCEE) sought to unify the application and assessment of dispositions relating to integrity and social responsibility.  In response, Educational Testing Service (ETS) developed an online program, ProEthica, to challenge individual teacher candidates and school leaders to explore potential-risk scenarios in an effort to produce self-reflection when making ethical decisions.  ProEthica is currently being embraced as a …

What Does It Mean To Be Happy In Higher Ed?, David Silva Dec 2016

What Does It Mean To Be Happy In Higher Ed?, David Silva

David Silva

In higher education circles, happiness doesn't get much play. While there's plenty of talk about student satisfaction, parental expectations, faculty morale, administrative attitudes, and legislative resolve, we don't ask basic questions about what it means to be happy in academia.

Perhaps discussions of happiness in higher ed are misplaced. After all, were not here to make anybody happy; we're here to get stuff done. There's teaching and learning to accomplish. Scholarship to undertake. Committee work to endure. Policies to implement. Dollars and people to manage.

Furthermore, concern about what makes for happy students can lead us toward that education model …

Improving Reading With Targeted Strategies For A Reluctant Elementary Reader, Amanda C. Bright Dec 2016

Improving Reading With Targeted Strategies For A Reluctant Elementary Reader, Amanda C. Bright

Amanda C. Bright

When elementary school children struggle with reading skills, teachers and parents worry. When
young children are reluctant to even engage in the act of reading, the situation becomes a dire. This action
research project focused on a single first-grade male student who, despite support in the home and in the
classroom, was averse to participating in any type of reading. Using a mixed methods approach, three
research-based reading strategies were introduced to this learner to engage his sense of self-efficacy for the
task, and both his responses, as well as the reactions of his parent, were analyzed. The action research …

Planning For The Elicitation Of Students’ Ideas: A Lesson Study Approach With Preservice Science Teachers, Douglas B. Larkin

Douglas B. Larkin

In an effort to better prepare science teachers to engage in high-leverage practices, this study investigates the choices and rationales of preservice science teachers in planning elicitation strategies and describes how their understandings about the elicitation of students’ ideas changed over time. Four cohorts of preservice science teachers engaged in a cycle of modified lesson study focused on the elicitation of student ideas. Findings suggest that the participants focused on revising the elicitation task to achieve greater task clarity and student participation and to provide more opportunities for individual thinking. One notable outcome of the study is the need for …
