The Effectiveness Of The Rising Starr Sophomore Program On Sophomore Slump, Lisa-Ann M. O'Connor Aug 2016

The Effectiveness Of The Rising Starr Sophomore Program On Sophomore Slump, Lisa-Ann M. O'Connor

Education Doctoral

Research suggested that there is a need for higher education institutions to focus on retaining sophomore students, as many struggle with sophomore slump. The term sophomore slump is “widely used to describe students who lack motivation, feel disconnected, and flounder academically” (Gahagan & Hunter, 2006, p. 18). To address this matter, some institutions of higher education have invested resources into sophomore year or second-year initiatives to retain sophomore students, but the lack of reported assessment and evaluation of the effectiveness of sophomore year or second-year initiatives in higher education institutions is an issue. The most cited initiatives that universities created …

A Qualitative Descriptive Study Examining The Current State Of The New York 4-H Program From A Leader’S Perspective, Megan E. Tifft

Education Doctoral

Nonprofit organizations (NPOs) represent a fast-growing industry with significant value in today’s society. NPOs are filling gaps in providing services the government can no longer deliver and are considered an economic industry worth billions of dollars. As evidenced in research, NPOs are facing a multitude of challenges. Still, most of these challenges are addressed as standalone issues. Research has provided tools and suggestions for how leadership can address singular challenges; however, few researchers have examined challenges broadly. It has been confirmed that organizational leadership needs to understand, from a leader’s perspective, the challenges of the organization so that efforts can …

The People's College? An Examination Of Who Governs Community Colleges At The Local Level, Katheryn Christine Brekken Aug 2016

The People's College? An Examination Of Who Governs Community Colleges At The Local Level, Katheryn Christine Brekken

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Community colleges are playing an increasingly important role in national and local postsecondary education and economic development policy arenas. These two-year institutions educate 46 percent of American undergraduates, including the majority of African American, Hispanic and Native American undergraduate students. However, community colleges are failing to graduate students, particularly students of color (AACC, 2012). Given the national demand for graduates, policymakers are struggling to help more under-represented groups succeed and complete their college degrees. Therefore, an examination of who is governing community colleges and making important policy decisions to address student success is critical. While there are a variety of …

A Relationship Study Comparing Satisfaction, Participation, And Commitment To Intramural And Club Sports With Students' Intention To Return To Campus, Kevin Reynolds

Graduate Theses

Recruitment and retention is a crucial and central goal for almost all higher education institutions. Therefore, it is important for universities and colleges to provide diverse activities and events to keep the students and prospective students interested and engaged. Previous research suggests that intramural and club sports programs are activities that could help increase recruitment and retention (McElveen & Rossow, 2014; Kampf & Teske, 2013). There is still a need, however, to show the impact of participation in intramural and club sports on a student’s intention to return to campus. This study examined how participation, commitment, and satisfaction levels effect …

Cooperative Activities To Reduce Aggression In Young Children, Kristin R. Beardsly Schoenherr

Masters of Arts in Education Action Research Papers

I investigated the effect of introducing cooperative games during recess to reduce aggressive behaviors in preschool-age children. The action research was done at an intentionally culturally and socio-economically diverse Montessori school in St. Paul, Minnesota. The 23 children involved were all children from the three to six age group who take daily naps. I recorded every aggressive incident I saw before, during, and after the intervention. I also recorded what cooperative activities I introduced for the intervention. Once before and after the intervention I asked the children if they enjoyed recess. I recorded observational notes such as weather conditions, and …
