Career Advice And Career Plans: Sources, Satisfaction, And Realisation, Sheldon Rothman, Kylie Hillman, Julie Mcmillan, David Curtis

Julie McMillan

The literature on career decision-making suggests that students make their decisions based on the degree of match between their own attributes and certain perceived characteristics of occupations and that these perceptions are generally accurate (Gottfredson, 2002). However, in Australia, there is also evidence that students have misunderstandings about the status of some occupations, including trades (Alloway, Dalley, Patterson, Walker, & Lenoy, 2004). The sources of career advice available to middle-secondary students and their satisfaction with that advice was found through a survey of a representative sample of Australian 15-year-old students. Nearly all Year 10 students reported that they had received …

Making Sense Of Academic Failure. Dissertation, Leena Her

Leena N. Her

This dissertation is an ethnography of first, how school participants in America make sense of academic failure and second, the consequences of their work. I study the methods they use and the explanations they invoke while engaged in this activity. I focus primarily on two groups of school participants in the American cultural landscape: educational researchers who are designated as the diagnosticians of the maladies of a "broken" educational system; and, students and school staff, who often have to explain the failure that they are confronted with. The analysis of how educational researchers traditionally make sense of academic failure utilizes …

The Mean Reply Depth Algorithm: A Correlational Study Of Quantitative Versus Qualitative Measures Of Threaded Discourse, Sandie Waters

Sandie H Waters

In the world of online learning, instructors look for the keys that open the door to student learning, engagement, satisfaction, retention, and ability to transfer newly acquired knowledge to real-world situations. One of the most common communication tools in online courses is the threaded discussion. With a growing number of students participating in online education comes the potential for an increase in faculty load. The reviewed courses provided over 1500 threads for two sections of a graduate course at a Mountain Region University. The number of threads that are produced by a student accounts for countless hours of reading, processing, …

Public Policy And The Effect Of Sibship Size On Educational Achievement: A Comparative Study Of 20 Countries, Hyunjoon Park Dec 2007

Public Policy And The Effect Of Sibship Size On Educational Achievement: A Comparative Study Of 20 Countries, Hyunjoon Park

Hyunjoon Park

Using international data on educational achievement among 15-year-olds in 20 OECD countries, I compare the effect of sibship size on reading literacy and link the cross-national variation in the sibship-size effect to differences in national contexts of public policies for families and children. Comparisons highlight significant cross-national variation in the level of public policies, even among countries ordinarily thought to belong to the same welfare regime. Deviating from previous literature that focused on overall differences across welfare regimes, I explore the way in which specific public policy variables, rather than categorical regimes, mediate the relationship between sibship size and educational …

The Impact Of Performance Level Misclassification On The Accuracy And Precision Of Percent At Performance Level Measures, Yi Shang, Damian Betebenner, Yun Xiang, Yan Zhao, Xiaohui Yue Dec 2007

The Impact Of Performance Level Misclassification On The Accuracy And Precision Of Percent At Performance Level Measures, Yi Shang, Damian Betebenner, Yun Xiang, Yan Zhao, Xiaohui Yue

Yi Shang

No Child Left Behind (NCLB) performance mandates, embedded within state accountability systems, focus school AYP (adequate yearly progress) compliance squarely on the percentage of students at or above proficient. The singular importance of this quantity for decision-making purposes has initiated extensive research into percent proficient as a measure of school quality. In particular, technical discussions have scrutinized the impact of sampling, measurement, and other sources of error on percent proficient statistics. In this article, we challenge the received orthodoxy that measurement error associated with individual students' scores is inconsequential for aggregate percent proficient statistics. Synthesizing current classification accuracy research with …

Differentiating Instruction In The Preschool Classroom: Bridging Emergent Literacy Instruction And Developmentally Appropriate Practice, Catherine Rosemary, Terri Purcell Dec 2007

Differentiating Instruction In The Preschool Classroom: Bridging Emergent Literacy Instruction And Developmentally Appropriate Practice, Catherine Rosemary, Terri Purcell

Catherine A. Rosemary

In response to the heightened press for literacy instruction in preschools, many early childhood teachers find themselves struggling with the question of how to infuse literacy into their daily routines and simultaneously recognize and appreciate the great variability in what children bring to the classroom. Put simply, how can preschool teachers differentiate instruction? The purpose of this chapter is to address this "how" question. Knowing how to differentiate instruction relies on a good understanding of what differentiation is and why it is important in early literacy teaching. Therefore, we begin the chapter with background on the underlying tension at the …

Education Research With Electronic Focus Groups, Kathryn Moyle, R Fitzgerald Dec 2007

Education Research With Electronic Focus Groups, Kathryn Moyle, R Fitzgerald

Professor Kathryn Moyle

An emerging trend in education research methods is to integrate digital technologies into the research process. Electronic focus groups represent one such innovation. Drawing on four examples of research and practice undertaken using a synchronous, digital system, this chapter reflects on how an innovative tool can assist in focus group research in the fields of school and higher education. The examples presented illustrate how some of the theoretical, practical and ethical problems that have arisen with traditional approaches to focus groups research can be overcome. It is anticipated that reflecting on such experiences and building upon the findings of these …

Vive La Révolution!, Julian Fraillon Dec 2007

Vive La Révolution!, Julian Fraillon

Julian Fraillon

If challenges in implementation and equity can be satisfactorily resolved, then the Government's Digital Education Revolution should reap results. This article examines the likely impact of the Government's plan. It is worth revisiting the policy and looking at the research into student ICT literacy to get a clear picture of what the 'digital revolution' will mean for schools, teachers, students and parents. The policy is built around five key themes: (1) to provide grants to schools of up to $1m to put a computer on the desk of every upper secondary school student; (2) to provide schools with FTTP (fibre …
