“I Don’T Know”: Engaging With Problematic Moments In Multicultural Education, Stephanie Kent, James Cumming Dec 2007

“I Don’T Know”: Engaging With Problematic Moments In Multicultural Education, Stephanie Kent, James Cumming

Stephanie Jo Kent

“I Don’t Know” Engaging with Problematic Moments in Multicultural Education Marilyn Cochran-Smith (2000) describes a moment that occurred during a well-known and historically well-received pedagogical seminar that included addressing race and racism. As part of one session, Cochran-Smith invited a Native American colleague to share some of his experiences with the class. He concluded his presentation, near the end of the scheduled class period, by asking, “And what does this program do to help you examine questions about race and racism in teaching and schooling?” Cochran-Smith describes what happened next: Without hesitation, one student teacher, a Puerto Rican woman, raised …

Averaging Effect Sizes Within And Across Studies Of Interventions Aimed At Improving Child Outcomes, Rebecca Maynard, Nianbo Dong, Irma Perez-Johnson Dec 2007

Averaging Effect Sizes Within And Across Studies Of Interventions Aimed At Improving Child Outcomes, Rebecca Maynard, Nianbo Dong, Irma Perez-Johnson

REBECCA A MAYNARD

ABSTRACT—Scientific and political forces are moving the social services field toward greater reliance on evidence-based interventions or strategies, including in the area of child development. This article draws on the work of meta-analysts to illustrate how study findings can sometimes be made more accessible to policy makers and practitioners by converting them to effect sizes and averaging them within or across studies. The article first introduces the concept of an effect size. Using empirical examples, it then illustrates the mechanics of computing average effect sizes and discusses their benefits and limitations as summary measures of the estimated effects of interventions. …

How Mobile Phones Help Learning In Secondary Schools, Elizabeth Hartnell-Young, Nadja Heym Dec 2007

How Mobile Phones Help Learning In Secondary Schools, Elizabeth Hartnell-Young, Nadja Heym

Dr Elizabeth Hartnell-Young

This research took place in 2007-8, at a time when mobile phones had become small, personal computers, providing clock, calendar, games, music player, Bluetooth connection, Internet access, and high-quality camera functions in addition to voice calls and short messaging. The Mobile Life Youth Report (2006) found that by the time they reach secondary school, 91% of 12 year olds in the UK have a mobile phone. Even though recent phone models, sometimes called ‘smart phones’, allow users to read pdf formats, spreadsheets and word-processed files, they have been more usually seen as disruptive, rather than useful, in school education.

Instructional Design Methods Integrating Instructional Technology, Paula Jones, Rita Davis Dec 2007

Instructional Design Methods Integrating Instructional Technology, Paula Jones, Rita Davis

Paula Jones

Effective teaching begins with effective planning of instruction. Planned instruction with technology integrated appeals to students and accommodates students’ needs. Students expect technology to be utilized to support the learning process because of their acquaintance with a variety of technologies at a very early age. Educators must be aware of the needs and expectations of students and then design courses that integrate technology based on these identified needs and expectations. A critical element required to integrate technology into the learning environment successfully is the instructional design process. The instructional design process provides a framework for systematically planning, developing, and adapting …

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (FKE) teaching and learning processes was certified to ISO 9001:2000 and now seeks the Engineering Accreditation Council of Malaysia (EAC) approval. One of FKE’s top management commitment is to ensure the programme accreditation requirements are met. EAC adopts American Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology 2000 (ABET) principles which promote outcome based education (OBE) learning process. OBE calls for the evaluation of the course learning outcomes (CLO) as specified in each Course Outline. Performance measurement has been largely dependent on students’ performance in carrying out tasks such as tests, quizzes or submission …

Australian Core Skills Framework (Acsf), K Brewer, P Mclean, K Perkins, Dave Tout, L Wyse Dec 2007

Australian Core Skills Framework (Acsf), K Brewer, P Mclean, K Perkins, Dave Tout, L Wyse

David (Dave) Tout

The Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) describes levels of performance in the 5 core skills of: Learning; Reading; Writing; Oral Communication; and Numeracy. These skills are essential for people to participate in our society. People need to communicate effectively in many different ways, for diverse purposes, in a variety of contexts and to think critically about information and ideas. It is likely that each new role and responsibility we take on will require new or enhanced core skills. Therefore, we need a range of strategies to adapt to changing circumstances and new challenges, including strategies to help us learn. The …

Introducing The Australian Socioeconomic Index 2006 (Ausei06), Julie Mcmillan, Frank Jones, Adrian Beavis

Julie McMillan

This paper introduces a new occupational status scale, the Australian Socioeconomic Index 2006 (AUSEI06). AUSEI06 is the latest in the series of ANU scales that for more than 40 years have provided researchers with a means of assigning sociologically meaningful occupational status scores to data coded in accordance with the official occupational classifications of the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). The scales continue to be widely used in fields as diverse as sociology, economics, education, and health. However, the release of a new occupational classification by the ABS has changed the manner in which much new Australian data on occupations …

Mobile Phones For Learning In Mainstream Schooling: Resistance And Change, Elizabeth Hartnell-Young Dec 2007

Mobile Phones For Learning In Mainstream Schooling: Resistance And Change, Elizabeth Hartnell-Young

Dr Elizabeth Hartnell-Young

This paper, based on empirical research, considers how structure and agency together reproduce the social practices surrounding mobile phone use in secondary schools in the United Kingdom. Many schools have policies banning their use in class, reflecting and supporting the dominant social construction of mobile phones as tools for social use, but not for learning. This study aimed to understand how mobile phones could support learning in secondary schools, and identified activities across many subject areas and year levels. It also showed that hands-on experience had a positive effect on students’ attitudes to mobile phones for learning in school. The …

What Does 'Public School Education' In Australia Mean In The 21st Century, Kathryn Moyle Dec 2007

What Does 'Public School Education' In Australia Mean In The 21st Century, Kathryn Moyle

Professor Kathryn Moyle

What does 'public school education' mean in Australia in the 21st century, with its past tradition of free, compulsory and secular schooling, and the present school sector policies urging the widespread use of digital technologies? This paper starts from the premise that histories and traditions underpin the provision of public school education in Australia. The author argues that the recognition of the nature of these histories and traditions is important to acknowledge for their sustainability: so they are not taken for granted; are subjected to investigation and are debated; and where appropriate can be maintained. In addition, acknowledging the role …

Participation In Senior Schooling: The Vocational Alternative And The Role Of Vet, Julie Mcmillan, David Curtis Dec 2007

Participation In Senior Schooling: The Vocational Alternative And The Role Of Vet, Julie Mcmillan, David Curtis

Julie McMillan

Participation in senior secondary schooling increased substantially between 1980 and the early 1990s, but has been static since that time. Since the mid 1990s curriculum offerings in the senior school years have been broadened in order to cater for a wider range of student interests and aptitudes. The offering of vocational courses in schools has been a prominent component of this curriculum broadening. At the same time, changes have occurred in the post-school VET landscape with rapid growth in traineeships. The labour market context has also changed with a decline in full-time youth employment accompanied by growth in part-time youth …

As Kansas foreshadowed for us in "Dust in the Wind" (1978), "nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky." This past year the two of us have transitioned from teachers into our new roles as co-directors of the university's Teaching & Learning Center, but we have still spent a lot of time in the classroom-as observers. One of our unit's services is assessing the classroom presentation of instructors, especially that of new faculty, and we have been overwhelmed by one major pedagogical problem shared by over 90% of the teachers. In short, no matter the discipline, a common problem stands …
