The 2007 Revised Ielts Pronunciation Scale, Sacha Develle Oct 2008

The 2007 Revised Ielts Pronunciation Scale, Sacha Develle

Dr Sacha DeVelle

A series of articles in Research Notes (February 2001, July 2001, November 2001, November 2006) reported the development, validation and implementation of the IELTS Speaking Test Revision Project (1998–2001). More recent research (Brown 2006, Brown and Taylor 2006) highlighted the need for clearer specification on the Pronunciation scale. Further revision arose as a consequence of this research and the continuing evolutionary process reflecting the test’s context of use. The present article describes a two-phase study using a mixed method (quantitative and qualitative) approach to examine raters’ marking behaviour and perceptions of the newly revised IELTS Pronunciation scale.

Tertiary Educator Identity: We Know Who We Are, Shelley Kinash, Stephen Hughes

Professor Shelley Kinash

To inform a coherent pedagogy through examined identity as professor requires more than constructing a list of personal descriptors. This paper challenges the dominant discourse through examining identity as fluid, situated and relational. A deep inquiry into tertiary educator identity is grounded in the first author‘s own defining moments within academia, as well as reflective analysis of literature situated within the context of Australian higher education.

Towards A Model Of Critical Ethics To Inform The Research Process In Postgraduate Research, Aidan Kenny May 2008

Towards A Model Of Critical Ethics To Inform The Research Process In Postgraduate Research, Aidan Kenny

Articles

The ethics narrative has become embedded in the contemporary research process, as evident in the emergence of Ethical Committees in faculty and both public and private organisations. Ethics have been codified, made visible and accessible as text artefacts in the forms of (both voluntary and regulatory) codes, statements, conventions, guidelines, principles, procedures, practices. In this short paper I explore this codification of ethics from the period post WWII, detailing some of the milestone text artefacts.

Analysis Of Students' Misconceptions Of Research Methods In Relations To Thinking Style, Tonya Tavares May 2008

Analysis Of Students' Misconceptions Of Research Methods In Relations To Thinking Style, Tonya Tavares

Senior Honors Projects

This study explores college students’ misconceptions about scientific research methods and their predisposition for rational-analytic thinking or experiential-intuitive thinking. The measures used in assessing misconceptions and thinking style were a seven-item version of Students’ Conceptions of Research Methods Inventory (SCoRI), specifically the misconceptions of research methods subscale (Meyer et al.(2005), and Epstein’s Rational-Experiential Inventory (REI) Scale (1996), respectively. The REI Scale consists of two subscales adapted from the Need for Cognition scale (NFC, J. T. Cacioppo & R. E. Petty, 1982) and Epstein’s Faith in Intuition (FI) scale, each with five questions; REI-NFC measures rational-analytic thinking, while the REI-FI measures …

Preliminary Study Of The Relationship Between Undergraduate Learning Outcome Assessment And Estimated Earnings Of Graduates, C. Crawford, Lawrence Gould, Robert Scott, Dane Crawford

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

The primary motivation for exploring the relationship between learning outcomes assessment and graduate earnings is to simply document the assumed link so that educators have some basis for claiming long-term benefits of outcomes assessment. Furthermore, the scope of the project was limited to exploring learning outcomes assessment in the state of Kansas as this was deemed a preliminary inquiry. Specifically, this article seeks to address the following three questions: 1. Have academic programs in Kansas adopted assessment plans? 2. Does student ability play a role in earnings differentiation upon graduation? 3. Is there a difference in earnings between the highest, …

Transformational Leadership Practices Of Teacher Leaders, Gary Alger Apr 2008

Transformational Leadership Practices Of Teacher Leaders, Gary Alger

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

Although many schools are developing teachers as leaders, researchers have not sufficiently investigated the leadership behaviors of these individuals. Therefore, using data collected from teacher leaders and their principals, I addressed three questions in this study: 1. What are the leadership practices of teacher leaders, as perceived by the teacher leaders and their principals? 2. Are there significant differences between the perceptions of teacher leaders and principals regarding the leadership practices of teacher leaders? 3. Are selected demographic variables of teacher leaders, specifically age, years of experience, educational level, and gender related to the leadership behaviors of teacher leaders?

Fuzzy And Research Paradigms Relationship: A Mutual Contribution, Devood Salmani, Mohsen Akbari

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

Fuzzy sets were introduced by Zadeh in 1965 to represent manipulate data and information possessing non-statistical uncertainties. It was specifically designed to mathematically represent uncertainty and vagueness and to provide formalized tools for dealing with the imprecision intrinsic to many problems. However, the story of fuzzy logic started much earlier. Fuzzy system is an alternative to traditional notions of set membership and logic that has its origins in ancient Greek philosophy. Research paradigms are rooted in philosophy paradigm, determine the direction of researches; how the researches reach to the reality, how they answer the questions of the seeking mind … …

Space To Learn And Grow: Assessing The Capacity Of A Regional Early Care And Education System, Robert L. Fischer, Kristen Mikelbank, Claudia J. Coulton

Faculty Scholarship

As communities across the United States work to meet the early care and education needs of young children, more research is needed to inform decision making at many levels. One key dimension of this is having clarity about the relative availability of care in light of demographic trends and geographic dispersion. The present study demonstrates a method to examine the capacity of early care programs to serve the children in a large urban county. The study takes stock of the existing early care system by comparing where the child care slots are and where the demand is—all at the neighborhood …
