Techniques For Addressing Gender Cognitive Differences In The Elementary Classroom, Nichole R. Brooker
Techniques For Addressing Gender Cognitive Differences In The Elementary Classroom, Nichole R. Brooker
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
From conception, the male and female brains develop differently. Due to these differences, current research shows methods of teaching should be examined and modified to accommodate both genders' learning needs. Educating teachers on the brain diversities between the genders is essential for opportunities in establishing a positive classroom atmosphere. In this project, the author has created an interactive workshop for new and experienced teachers to explore the vast differences between the male and female brain, and what those differences mean in the classroom. The interactive workshop will be a full day workshop where the teachers will be presented with facts …
The Language Of Mathematics: Virginia Standards Of Learning Mathematical Pictionary For Grades K-3., Amanda Rashelle Collins-Browning
The Language Of Mathematics: Virginia Standards Of Learning Mathematical Pictionary For Grades K-3., Amanda Rashelle Collins-Browning
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
My experience teaching in Virginia schools, pacing and aligning instruction to the Virginia Standards of Learning, caused me to recognize the need for a mathematics tool to simplify and transition K-3 mathematics vocabulary usage and instruction. The language of mathematics uses three linguistic tools: words, symbols, and diagrams. Within this thesis I developed an instructional tool, a "Mathematics Pictionary", to accommodate primary grades K-3 and transition mathematical language and vocabulary skills between the primary grades aligned to the instruction and guidelines of the Virginia Standards of Learning. The Pictionary may be used coherently with lesson plans, available from the Virginia …

ABSTRACT THE EFFECTS OF PRIMING ON SPONTANEOUS VERBAL LANGUAGE IN CHILDREN WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS by Michelle L. Ivey A multi-element design was used to investigate the effect of priming on spontaneous verbal communication in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Three children with ASD engaged in 20-minute thematic activity sessions (ACT) with the investigator. Prior to the ACTs, they met with another trained researcher for 10-minute presessions. Half of the presessions incorporated the conventions of priming with materials to be used in the upcoming ACT (i.e., related presessions; RP). During the other half of the presessions, participants were not …
An Exploratory Study Of Mathematics Engagement Of Secondary Students, Tracy Thomas Brown
An Exploratory Study Of Mathematics Engagement Of Secondary Students, Tracy Thomas Brown
Middle-Secondary Education and Instructional Technology Dissertations
An Exploratory Study of Mathematics Engagement of Secondary Students by Tracy Thomas Brown A large proportion of American students are not psychologically connected or engaged to what is occurring in their classes; in addition, they fail to take school seriously, have lost interest in school, and do not value or seek out success (Steinberg, Brown, & Dornbusch, 1996). In addition, the relationship in a mathematics classroom between schooling and engagement from the student’s perspective is not well known (Cothran & Ennis, 2000). The purpose of this study was to investigate engagement in order to describe students’ constructs of student engagement, …
To Stay And To Change: Beginning Social Justice Educators Creating Collaborative Third Space(S), Teresa Renae Fisher
To Stay And To Change: Beginning Social Justice Educators Creating Collaborative Third Space(S), Teresa Renae Fisher
Middle-Secondary Education and Instructional Technology Dissertations
Beginning teachers committed to social justice and emancipatory education often experience isolation and discouragement and need communities for intellectual, social, and emotional support as they learn to teach, and sustain their commitments to transformative pedagogy. This qualitative inquiry followed recent graduates who demonstrated personal commitments to a more just world through their lives and their studies and who began their first year as teachers in a variety of settings. Framed within a theory of transformational learning, third space, and Adler’s concepts of social interest and encouragement, the participants and the participant researcher co-created a virtual community to reflect upon and …
Factors Affecting Construction Of Science Discourse In The Context Of An Extracurricular Science And Technology Project, Horace P. Webb
Factors Affecting Construction Of Science Discourse In The Context Of An Extracurricular Science And Technology Project, Horace P. Webb
Middle-Secondary Education and Instructional Technology Dissertations
Doing and learning science are social activities that require certain language, activities, and values. Both constitute what Gee (2005) calls Discourses. The language of learning science varies with the learning context (Lemke, 2001,1990). Science for All Americans (AAAS, 1990) and Inquiry and the National Science Education Standards (NRC, 2000) endorse inquiry science learning. In the United States, most science learning is teacher-centered; inquiry science learning is rare (NRC, 2000). This study focused on 12 high school students from two suburban high schools, their three faculty mentors, and two engineering mentors during an extracurricular robotics activity with FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). …
The Relationship Between Intrinsic Motivation, Motivational Interviewing And Physical Activity In An African American Church Population, Simone S. Rahotep
The Relationship Between Intrinsic Motivation, Motivational Interviewing And Physical Activity In An African American Church Population, Simone S. Rahotep
Counseling and Psychological Services Dissertations
African Americans carry a disproportionate amount of the health burden for chronic disease in the United States (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2007). Diabetes, heart disease and cancer, to name a few, are diseases which prematurely capture the lives of African Americans. While chronic, these diseases are preventable with the advent of behavioral change. Physical activity is a primary contributor to longer life expectancy and fewer health concerns (United States Department of Health and Human Services, 1996). While American society, as a whole, struggles to incorporate more physical activity in their lifestyles, African Americans exhibit higher levels of physical …
An Exploration Of The Coping Strategies In Female Counseling Doctoral Students' Marriages, Jung H. Hyun
An Exploration Of The Coping Strategies In Female Counseling Doctoral Students' Marriages, Jung H. Hyun
Counseling and Psychological Services Dissertations
The growing literature on the impact of doctoral programs on marriages has identified four major areas of concern: financial difficulties, change of lifestyle, lack of time, and communication issues (Bergen & Bergen, 1978; Cao, 2001; Giles, 1983; Middleton, 2001; Norton, Thomas, Morgan, Tilley, & Dickins, 1998; Williams, 1977). In addition, Looney, Harding, Blotcky and Branhart (1980) found that psychotherapists were more likely to have marital discord and failure in their marriages than in the general population. Moreover, studies have shown that female doctoral students reported more stress compared to male students (Mallinckrodt, Leong, & Kralj, 1989). With the recognition that …

Structural Extension Of The Cattell-Horn-Carroll Cross-Battery Approach To Include Measures Of Visual-Motor Integration, Janell Hargrove Brooks
Counseling and Psychological Services Dissertations
In spite of the long-standing tradition of including measures of visual-motor integration in psychological evaluations, visual-motor abilities have not been included in the Cattell-Horn-Carroll (CHC) theory of cognitive abilities or its complementary cross-battery approach to assessment. The purpose of this research was to identify the shared constructs of a popular test of visual-motor integration and a test of intellectual functioning, and to investigate how a test of visual-motor integration would be classified within the CHC model. A large normative sample of 3,015 participants that ranged in age from 5 to 97 years completed the Bender Visual-Motor Gestalt Test, Second Edition …

Polishing Cornerstones: Tift College, Georgia Baptists' Separate College For Women, Darin Scott Harris
Educational Policy Studies Dissertations
This dissertation examines Tift College, formerly in Forsyth, Georgia, and the problems Tift faced as Georgia Baptist's women's college. Many of these difficulties were a result of the beliefs of Georgia Baptists on educating women and the fact that Georgia Baptists placed a greater value on education for males. This work also examines the role of feminism in a southern women's college. To complete this task, the dissertation examines the beliefs and attitudes of Georgia Baptists about education in general, and educating women in specific and how funding played a part in their education. The dissertation addresses Tift's struggle to …

Teacher Training For Medical Students And Residents, Gates Jr. Richards
Teacher Training For Medical Students And Residents, Gates Jr. Richards
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
The directors of many medical education accreditation bodies have called for an increased focus on teacher training for physicians and other medical professionals. As the role of specialist physicians becomes busier, many of their traditional teaching expectations have been transferred to residents and medical students. Many medical school directors have created Resident as Teacher (RAT) curricula to better prepare their students as educators. In this project, the author reviewed the literature relating to existing RAT programs. After reviewing the literature, the author created a RAT curriculum to be utilized on Medicine in the Wild, a month long, expeditionary medical school …

Faculty And Student Perceptions Of The Effects Of Mid-Course Evaluations On Learning And Teaching, Whitney Ransom
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to describe the effects of mid-course evaluations on teaching and student learning. A mixed methods approach was used, combining faculty and student surveys, faculty interviews, debriefing sessions, and a comparison of mid-course evaluations scores with end-of-semester scores. Out of 510 section mean scores (128 sections) from faculty members who participated in the study, 352 section mean scores (88 sections, 69%) showed students' perceptions of their own learning improved between the time they completed the mid-course evaluation and the time they completed the end-of-course student rating survey. Results showed when faculty administered a mid-course evaluation, …
Evaluating Child-Based Reading Constructs And Assessments With Struggling Adult Readers, Alice Owens Nanda
Evaluating Child-Based Reading Constructs And Assessments With Struggling Adult Readers, Alice Owens Nanda
Communication Sciences and Disorders Dissertations
Due to the paucity of research on struggling adult readers, researchers rely on child-based reading constructs and measures when investigating the reading skills of adults struggling with reading. The purpose of the two studies in this investigation was to evaluate the appropriateness of using child-based reading constructs and assessments with adults reading between the third- and fifth-grade levels. The first study examined whether measurement constructs behind reading-related tests for struggling adult readers are similar to what is known about measurement constructs for children. The sample included 371 adults, including 218 native English speakers and 153 English speakers of other languages. …
An Autoethnography:A Mathematics Teacher's Journey Of Identity Construction And Change, Anthony B. Stinson
An Autoethnography:A Mathematics Teacher's Journey Of Identity Construction And Change, Anthony B. Stinson
Middle-Secondary Education and Instructional Technology Dissertations
Despite some gains, improving secondary mathematics instruction remains an area of concern of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). Recitation, also known as lecturing, prevails as the practice of choice of mathematics teachers in the United States. However, the report of the NCTM Research Advisory Committee 2000 indicates that the mathematical proficiency of students increases when the practice of choice includes more than recitation. Therefore, changes in instruction in the mathematics classroom should occur to improve student learning. The purpose of this dissertation is to provide a personalized account of one mathematics teacher’s use of reflective teaching as …
What Is Mathematics? An Exploration Of Teachers' Philosophies Of Mathematics During A Time Of Curriculum Reform, Kimberly White-Fredette
What Is Mathematics? An Exploration Of Teachers' Philosophies Of Mathematics During A Time Of Curriculum Reform, Kimberly White-Fredette
Middle-Secondary Education and Instructional Technology Dissertations
Current reform in mathematics teaching and learning is rooted in a changing vision of school mathematics, one that includes constructivist learning, student-centered pedagogy, and the use of worthwhile tasks (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, 1989, 1991, 2000). This changing vision not only challenges teachers’ beliefs about mathematics instruction but their philosophies of mathematics as well (Dossey, 1992). This study investigates the processes that four teachers’ go through as they implement a new task-based mathematics curriculum while exploring their personal philosophies of mathematics. The participants were part of a graduate-level course that examined, through the writings of Davis and Hersh …
African American Men And College Mathematics: Gaining Access And Attaining Success, Christopher Charlie Jett
African American Men And College Mathematics: Gaining Access And Attaining Success, Christopher Charlie Jett
Middle-Secondary Education and Instructional Technology Dissertations
The research literature regarding African American male college students reports that they often experience difficulties with mathematics (Stage & Kloosterman, 1995; Treisman, 1992). It is also reported that many African American students enter college seeking to complete their degrees in mathematics and science, but few of these students successfully complete the core requirements (Hrabowski, Maton, & Greif, 1998; Treisman, 1992). In spite of these reported trends, there are some African American male students who, indeed, achieve in college mathematics. The purpose of this study was to analyze how being African American and male might play out in the college mathematics …
Orchestrating Student Discourse Opportunities And Listening For Conceptual Understandings In High School Science Classrooms, Melissa Grass Kinard
Orchestrating Student Discourse Opportunities And Listening For Conceptual Understandings In High School Science Classrooms, Melissa Grass Kinard
Middle-Secondary Education and Instructional Technology Dissertations
Scientific communities have established social mechanisms for proposing explanations, questioning evidence, and validating claims. Opportunities like these are often not a given in science classrooms (Vellom, Anderson, & Palincsar, 1993) even though the National Science Education Standards (NSES, 1996) state that a scientifically literate person should be able to “engage intelligently in public discourse and debate about important issues in science and technology” (National Research Council [NRC], 1996). Research further documents that students’ science conceptions undergo little modification with the traditional teaching experienced in many high school science classrooms (Duit, 2003, Dykstra, 2005). This case study is an examination of …
Adult Learning In Nonformal Settings: Cultural Festivals As Spaces For Socially Situated Cognition, Audrey M. Ambrosino
Adult Learning In Nonformal Settings: Cultural Festivals As Spaces For Socially Situated Cognition, Audrey M. Ambrosino
Communication Sciences and Disorders Dissertations
Recent years have witnessed a renewed interest in the role of museums and cultural festivals in adult learning. Once considered the keepers of physical and cultural history, there was only limited concern for if and how adults learned from these settings. The conventional view held that museums provided knowledge, and it was an individual’s prerogative whether or not to seek it out. The past few decades, however, have seen both a resurgence of interest in visiting museums and festivals and a more concerted effort to understand their value in a rapidly evolving society. This study considers visitor experiences at the …
International Students' Psychological And Sociocultural Adaptation In The United States, Seda Sumer
International Students' Psychological And Sociocultural Adaptation In The United States, Seda Sumer
Counseling and Psychological Services Dissertations
International students constitute an important cohort in the United States (U.S.) colleges and universities. In order for the U.S. colleges and universities to better accommodate the significant number of international students and to recruit them in the future, it is critical to identify factors that influence these students’ acculturation and adjustment processes and provide professionals with guidelines for creating culturally appropriate services and programs for them. Therefore the current study examined international students’ adaptation to the U.S. in relation to their acculturation levels, coping processes, and intent to stay in the U.S. after their graduation. Center for Epidemiologic Studies - …
Preservice Teacher Perspectives On Prereferral Intervention And Student Support Teams, Kathryn Rogers Grogg
Preservice Teacher Perspectives On Prereferral Intervention And Student Support Teams, Kathryn Rogers Grogg
Counseling and Psychological Services Dissertations
This qualitative inquiry evaluated the Student Support Team Project and its effects on preservice teachers’ knowledge and perceptions of prereferral intervention and student support teams. This investigation is important because prereferral intervention and student support teams have been used increasingly to provide assistance to teachers and to students who need assistance with academic, social and emotional problems. This has created a need to provide preservice education that helps to prepare teachers to use these resources to help their students. This investigation demonstrated a specific approach to such instruction for preservice teachers (i.e., the Student Support Team Project), including an evaluation …
A Monte Carlo Study Investigating Missing Data, Differential Item Functioning, And Effect Size, Phyllis Lorena Garrett
A Monte Carlo Study Investigating Missing Data, Differential Item Functioning, And Effect Size, Phyllis Lorena Garrett
Educational Policy Studies Dissertations
ABSTRACT A MONTE CARLO STUDY INVESTIGATING MISSING DATA, DIFFERENTIAL ITEM FUNCTIONING, AND EFFECT SIZE by Phyllis Garrett The use of polytomous items in assessments has increased over the years, and as a result, the validity of these assessments has been a concern. Differential item functioning (DIF) and missing data are two factors that may adversely affect assessment validity. Both factors have been studied separately, but DIF and missing data are likely to occur simultaneously in real assessment situations. This study investigated the Type I error and power of several DIF detection methods and methods of handling missing data for polytomous …
A Monte Carlo Study: The Impact Of Missing Data In Cross-Classification Random Effects Models, Meltem Alemdar
A Monte Carlo Study: The Impact Of Missing Data In Cross-Classification Random Effects Models, Meltem Alemdar
Educational Policy Studies Dissertations
Unlike multilevel data with a purely nested structure, data that are cross-classified not only may be clustered into hierarchically ordered units but also may belong to more than one unit at a given level of a hierarchy. In a cross-classified design, students at a given school might be from several different neighborhoods and one neighborhood might have students who attend a number of different schools. In this type of scenario, schools and neighborhoods are considered to be cross-classified factors, and cross-classified random effects modeling (CCREM) should be used to analyze these data appropriately. A common problem in any type of …
Congressional Debates Over Prisoner Education: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Mark Timothy Yates
Congressional Debates Over Prisoner Education: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Mark Timothy Yates
Educational Policy Studies Dissertations
The United States has the highest incarceration rate of any country. The causes for the large number of prisoners can be traced, in part, to a politicized war on crime that resulted in harsh sentencing and high recidivism rates. Prisoner education provides the potential for slowing the revolving door of prison by helping to create engaged citizens, who are committed to bettering themselves and their communities. However, there is a paucity of support for programs such as Pell Grants, which could facilitate emancipatory education in prisons. The purpose of this work is to examine why prisoners are provided few meaningful …
