The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a language development program that uses music as a medium of instruction on the reading achievement of Spanish speaking migrant children. Fifty-one preschool aged subjects from a Title I (Michigan Department of Education, 1987) Summer Migrant Education Program participated in the study.

The subjects were randomly divided into 2 groups. They were provided oral language instruction to help them acquire the language of the basal readers. In other words, the vocabulary and language patterns found in a basal reading program were built into the daily language lessons. In the …

From 1986 to 1989 Alice Drive Middle School was one of the lowest among nine schools in Sumter School District 17 in average daily attendance. The problem was documented each year in a report issued by the District Attendance Supervisor to the members of the school board and to the South Carolina State Department of Education. State, school district, and Alice Drive Middle School policies, laws, and other related documents were examined in an effort to gain insight into the problem. This applied research practicum describes a program for improving reading achievement for a target group of students in grades two through five in a small public elementary school in a southeastern rural community. Problems originally noted includes students reading below grade level, and low test scores on the California Achievement Test as compared to system, state and national scores. Weaknesses in reading have been documented from 1986 to 1989. The test data were analyzed on the basis of the major reading components of word analysis, reading vocabulary, and reading comprehension. This proposal describes a series of planned strategies comprising a home-school learning program to facilitate preparation for increased student achievement in grades kindergarten through fifth on the district testing instrument the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. Problems originally noted that 50% of the kindergarten children tested in April, 1988 at River Plaza Elementary School, Middletown, New Jersy achieved below the district accepted passing score in mathematics while 83% of the first grade students fell below the cutoff in reading and 92% in spelling, Additionally, in all grades, except third, declines in the cluster areas of reading, mathematics and writing were …

Robotics And Children: Their Relationship To Science Achievement, Problem Solving, Adhd Rating Scale Scores, And Learning Styles, Susan Preston Wagner

This study investigated whether robotics could significantly improve science achievement scores or problem solving scores as compared to battery powered manipulatives or an untreated traditionally taught control. Also examined was whether there were interactions between treatment group membership and ADHD Rating Scale scores, and treatment group membership and the learning styles subscales auditory, visual, tactile, and kinesthetic. Fifteen fourth through sixth grade classes, involving 364 students from three schools participated in this study. A fifth grade science unit on force, motion, and machines was taught for 20-30 minutes daily, followed by a 50-60 minute robotics session. The treatments lasted for …

The purposes of this study were to explore: (1) cancer patients' perceptions of spiritual care given by nurses, (2) the documentation on records of the provision of care, and (3) the relationship of spiritual care provided to the spiritual well-being of patients.

Forty terminally ill cancer patients hospitalized on oncology units at three medical centers were surveyed about the nature and scope of spiritual care provided by nurses and others, and their perceptions of their spiritual well-being. Data were collected by trained registered nurses who administered two questionnaires to which patients responded orally.

This major applied research project describes a plan and skills program that was designed to improve the percentage of students passing the math section of the Georgia Basic Skills Competency Test as first-time test takers in the tenth grade at Greene/Tallaferro Comprehensive High School in Greensboro, Georgia. This report describes the inservice training activities that were designed to improve the social studies achievement of students with Specific learning Disabilities. The students scored consistently low in the area of social studies despite the high cognitive abilities of the students. This report describes a model program that through the administering of staff development inservice workshops (allowing for feedback and support services), assists teachers in utilizing developmentally appropriate practices in the primary grades. The inservice workshops were designed to facilitate the development of optimum team work strategies through and examination of the interests and performance styles of the teacher and teacher aide. The improved teamwork allowed the teacher and teacher aide to create and maintain enriched child-oriented classrooms. The purpose of this study was to kinematically describe the movements of the lower extremities in running with running shoes and running barefoot. Another purpose of this study was to identify and compare the anatomical and mechanical adaptations that occur. Seven college age females, members of the University of Nebraska at Omaha cross-country team, and one local competitive long-distance female runner 27 yrs old, were subjects of this study. All subjects were free of any physical disability that could have caused an impaired performance.

This study was conducted to determine the processes and strategies selected middle school students use during the solving of non-routine mathematics problems. Qualitative research methods were used to identify the cognitive and metacognitive skills and processes used in problem solving and to determine the affective influences on the problem solving process.

Six middle grade students were selected to participate in the study. Each student was interviewed four times. The first interview was conducted in order to develop student profiles by obtaining information about each student's family, school, and mathematics background. This study was undertaken to determine selected principals' perceptions of the importance of the NPBEA's initially recommended seven foundational areas of learning and associated topics to be included in doctoral programs for preservice preparation of principals. A secondary purpose of the study was to determine the amount of coverage of the foundational areas and associated topics in the preparation programs of the selected principals. National samples of U.S. public elementary and secondary school principals were surveyed over a 14 week period. The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between perceptions of academic deans and department chairpersons regarding the leadership behavior of deans; and, to determine the relationship between perceived leadership behavior of deans and job satisfaction of department chairpersons in the public institutions of higher education. The study involved a random sample of 50 academic deans and 285 department chairpersons at public universities in Tennessee. Testing of five null hypotheses was based upon responses of 42 academic deans (84%) and 173 department chairpersons (60%). The purpose of the study was to develop objective grading tools in the areas of key, range, rhythm/meter, tempo, dynamic and intonation control. Each area was considered separately for 17 different instruments of the band. The study included the development of a computer program capable of permitting a band director to objectively analyze the strengths and weaknesses of his/her band, scan all of the compositions which have been entered into its data bank, and then list appropriate matches.

Existing instructional design and curriculum design strategy components were synthesized to provide a comprehensive set of design models for the development of learning systems. The term instructional logistics was coined to define the management of student progress through a series of customized learning experiences. Strategies were developed for the design of student-centered learning systems by partitioning a curriculum into meaningful and manageable pieces (called chunques) and by manipulating those pieces to create personalized and individualized paths through a series of self-contained learning experiences. The Relationship Between The Attitudes Of Directors And Instructors And Student Ratings In Remedial And Developmental Studies In Tennessee's Community Colleges, Carolyn H. Brown

The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship existed between the attitudes of remedial and developmental directors and instructors and student ratings. A population of 230 full-time directors and instructors and 3,269 remedial students were surveyed in the Fall of 1990. The return rate was 95% for the directors and instructors with the student rate dependent upon instructors administering the instruments. Two instruments were developed--one to measure the attitudes of directors and instructors and one for student ratings of instructors. During the spring of the 1988-89 school year, all 115 fourth-grade students at China Grove Elementary School were given the American Alliance Physical Fitness Test. The students were also given blood-cholesterol screening and blood-pressure tests. The tests were given because of concern by faculty members anu school administrators that the students were physically unfit and this may be affecting academic performance. Formal interviews were conducted with all 115 target group members during the 1988-89 school year. Health and exercise practices by students and parents were discussed.
