Many within vocational education and training (VET) find themselves in both leading and following roles but research into Australian VET leadership is still in an emerging stage and as yet there appears to have been no discussion of followership in this important educational sector. Furthermore, vocational education now requires individuals to lead within an increasingly global context (Carter & Morgan 2002; Coates et al. 2010) so whilst this study is primarily aimed at Australian VET practitioners, policy makers and researchers, it could also be useful to the international community involved in vocational education.

A Quasi-Experimental Evaluation Of An On-Line Formative Assessment And Tutoring System., Neil T. Heffernan Iii

ASSISTment is a web-based math tutor designed to address the need for timely student assessment while simultaneously providing instruction, thereby avoiding lost instruction time that typically occurs during assessment. This paper presents a quasi-experiment that evaluates whether ASSISTment use has an effect on improving middle school students' year-end test scores. The data was collected from 1240 seventh graders in three treatment schools and one comparison school. Posttest (7th grade year-end test) results indicate, after adjusting for the pretest (6th grade year-end test), that students in the treatment schools significantly outperformed students in the comparison school and the difference was especially ...

Student evaluations of teaching (SET) are used by institutions of higher learning in the tenure and promotion process and in awarding merit pay increases. The trend at some institutions has been towards using an online student assessment instrument (SAI) in lieu of the traditional paper –based, in-class assessment. This study examines the difference in student evaluations in two contexts; online and paper-based, in a finance course taught to non-finance majors. The evidence strongly indicates faculty receives higher evaluations using a paper-based instrument administered during class than with an online assessment instrument which students complete on their own time.

Brief article in which the authors argue that governments and organizations investing in developing-world education must move away from the assumption that improvements in test scores provide evidence of success. They believe, instead, that in a time of scarcity, it is more important to seek out interventions that lead to the greatest social and economic impact for the poor.
