Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership
Greetings from Boiling Springs, North Carolina, home of Gardner-Webb University and the Journal of Organizational and Educational Leadership. Geographically, we are nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains about one hour west of Charlotte. Virtually, we are another story.
Like Scarlett Johansson’s cosmically ascendant character, “Lucy,” said at the end of the film by the same name, JOEL is “everywhere.” Well, almost everywhere. The fact is that in the last 30 days alone, 13 institutions in 19 countries representing every continent except Antarctica has downloaded at least one article from our premier edition.

Effective Interventions For Improving Reading Accuracy And Fluency In Children With Dyslexia, Carlea A. Winkler
Effective Interventions For Improving Reading Accuracy And Fluency In Children With Dyslexia, Carlea A. Winkler
Scholarship and Engagement in Education
There are a vast number of instructional strategies for teaching students with dyslexia, but successful approaches all share a few key components including, a high degree of structure, intensive and explicit instruction, and a low student to teacher ratio. Additionally, most research-backed strategies fall into one of two categories: programs that target phonological awareness, and programs that target orthographic pattern recognition and morphology. Numerous studies on phonological awareness training and orthographic pattern recognition training have showed positive results. However, more research is needed to understand why some children fail to make significant gains even with intensive intervention, and what factors …

Scholarship and Engagement in Education
Teaching to engage students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can inspire the whole classroom and make teaching and learning engaging and exciting. Although teachers and students alike face a challenging educational landscape, much can be done to empower students with special needs. Teaching with the whole classroom in mind with an emphasis on hands on, explorative and inspirational learning experiences to accommodate for these students strengthens and causes student engagement and agency. This article highlights the challenges and potential breakthroughs possible for classroom instruction specifically where the ADHD student is concerned and looks towards teaching mindfulness and empowerment as …

Martin Buber’S I-Thou Perspective As An Alternative Approach To Antibullying Efforts. A Response To "Exploring Prosocial Behavior Through Structured Philosophical Dialogue: A Quantitative Evaluation", Carrie M. Nolan, Sarah Stitzlein
Democracy and Education
The paper "Exploring Prosocial Behavior through Structured Philosophical Dialogue: A Quantitative Evaluation" ambitiously made the argument that a pedagogy grounded in dialogical inquiry as part of the Philosophy for Children program will positively affect incidents of bullying in schools. This response to the author’s work includes a brief overview of her main argument and subsequent study and proceeds to suggest one possible alternative that she did not consider, namely Buber’s perspective on the I-Thou relation and the potential this holds in regards to bullying. Making the argument that bullying is a normative issue stemming from how people receive each other, …
Critical Pedagogy And Participatory Democracy: Creating Classroom Contexts That Challenge "Common Sense." A Response To "The Political Nuances Of Narratives And An Urban Educator's Response", Lilia D. Monzó, P. Zitlali Morales
Critical Pedagogy And Participatory Democracy: Creating Classroom Contexts That Challenge "Common Sense." A Response To "The Political Nuances Of Narratives And An Urban Educator's Response", Lilia D. Monzó, P. Zitlali Morales
Democracy and Education
In this response to “The Political Nuances of Narratives and an Urban Educator’s Response,” the authors applaud Pearman’s critical approach to deconstructing and challenging narratives of heroic figures who single-handedly change the world and agree with him that these narratives restrict the sense of agency that may propel citizens to become actively involved in social change efforts. We argue that it is important to question why these narratives exist and to understand them in light of the hegemonic capitalist structure that exploits the masses in service to the capitalist class. Although we agree with Pearman that democracy is best served …

Problematizing Assumptions, Examining Dilemmas, And Exploring Promising Possibilities In Culturally Relevant Pedagogy. A Response To “'I Didn’T See It As A Cultural Thing': Supervisors Of Student Teachers Define And Describe Culturally Responsive Supervision", Maria Dantas-Whitney, R. Dana Ulveland
Democracy and Education
In response to the study and recommendations presented in the article “'I Didn’t See it as a Cultural Thing,'” written by Linda Griffin, Dyan Watson and Tonda Liggett, we explore three interrelated topics. First, we seek to problematize some of the assumptions in the study. We review some of the authors’ approaches and assertions that seem to reflect a hierarchical power structure and a deficit model. Second, we examine our own dilemmas and struggles in enacting culturally relevant practices within our teacher education program. Our reflections derive from our recent experience preparing for a reaccreditation site visit by NCATE. Third, …

The Missing Elements Of Change. A Response To "Youth Change Agents: Comparing The Sociopolitical Identities Of Youth Organizers And Youth Commissioners", Matthew L. Goldwasser
Democracy and Education
By establishing a set of theoretical frameworks to view and compare the work of youth organizers and youth commissioners, and through personal interviews, the authors of the paper “Youth Change Agents: Comparing the Sociopolitical Identities of Youth Organizers and Youth Commissioners” presented their explanation of the development of the sociopolitical identities and civic commitments of each group. This response paper asks questions about the authors’ limited use of context and complexity to explain how their youth arrived at their opinions, perspectives, and ultimately their sociopolitical identities. Their work also raises questions of how and why civic engagement and social activism …
Neoliberal Ideology And Democratic Learning. A Response To "Challenging Freedom: Neoliberalism And The Erosion Of Democratic Education", Emery James Hyslop-Margison, Andrés Ramírez
Neoliberal Ideology And Democratic Learning. A Response To "Challenging Freedom: Neoliberalism And The Erosion Of Democratic Education", Emery James Hyslop-Margison, Andrés Ramírez
Democracy and Education
In "Challenging Freedom: Neoliberalism and the Erosion of Democratic Education," the author suggests that the presumed decline of democratic learning in public schooling follows from two primary forces: (a) the metaphysical implications of Cartesian psychophysical dualism that support an ontological understanding of the self as distinct from social influence and (b) a corresponding concept of freedom emerging from this ontology that exonerates individuals from any meaningful level of social moral responsibility. Although we agree in large part with the general argument advanced in the essay, there are some theoretical and historical gaps that we attempt to bridge in this response. …

Reinventing The High School Government Course: Rigor, Simulations, And Learning From Text, Walter C. Parker, Jane C. Lo
Democracy and Education
The high school government course is arguably the main site of formal civic education in the country today. This article presents the curriculum that resulted from a multiyear study aimed at improving the course. The pedagogic model, called Knowledge in Action, centers on a rigorous form of project-based learning where the projects are weeks-long simulations. The first section introduces the course and the study, the second describes the methodology and design principles, the third describes the political simulations that are the spine of the course, and the fourth examines implementation and design issues that emerged across the years. The …
Education For Deliberative Democracy: A Typology Of Classroom Discussions, Martin Samuelsson
Education For Deliberative Democracy: A Typology Of Classroom Discussions, Martin Samuelsson
Democracy and Education
The theory of deliberative democracy places public deliberations at the heart of democracy. In order to participate in democratic deliberations, citizens need certain skills, attitudes, and values. Within the field of education for deliberative democracy, it is assumed that these are learned through participation in democratic deliberation. Thus, one way to educate future citizens for deliberative democracy is by constructing democratic deliberations in the classroom. In this article, four strategically chosen examples of discussions taking place inside classrooms are analyzed, in order to flesh out the abstract criteria of democratic deliberations and to create an empirically based typology of classroom …

Building The Dream: Transformational Resistance, Community-Based Organizations, And The Civic Engagement Of Latinos In The New South, Eleanor A. Petrone Dr
Democracy and Education
This article examines how a group of Latino youth living in the Southeast experienced, adapted to, and resisted oppressive social structures within their community through their involvement with youth media. Through the content analysis of a teen radio show produced by and for Latino youth, in conjunction with semistructured interviews and ethnographic field notes, the author investigates how five Mexican-born high school students confronted and attempted to transform the educational practices that served to keep them subordinate. The study posits the community organization that sponsored the radio show as a pedagogical site of resistance and transformation, which provided the students …

“I Didn’T See It As A Cultural Thing”: Supervisors Of Student Teachers Define And Describe Culturally Responsive Supervision, Linda B. Griffin, Dyan Watson, Tonda Liggett
Democracy and Education
Student teaching supervisors can play an integral role in teacher candidates’ ability to understand and enact culturally responsive pedagogy (CRP). However, supervisors may lack the awareness, knowledge, skill, or willingness to serve as culturally responsive supervisors. This paper reports the findings from a qualitative study to find out how supervisors described and supported CRP. We found that supervisors hold unsophisticated views of CRP and face the following challenges enacting culturally responsive supervision: feelings of inadequacy, difficulty talking about race, color-blind orientations, and a tendency to purposefully avoid race talk. We provide recommendations for professional development to address these challenges and …
Youth Change Agents: Comparing The Sociopolitical Identities Of Youth Organizers And Youth Commissioners, Jerusha O. Conner, Katherine Cosner
Youth Change Agents: Comparing The Sociopolitical Identities Of Youth Organizers And Youth Commissioners, Jerusha O. Conner, Katherine Cosner
Democracy and Education
Although youth have long been at the forefront of social change, the last two decades have seen an upsurge in the number of organizations, agencies, and governmental bodies dedicated to supporting the idea of youth voice in public policy. Drawing on in-depth individual interviews with 32 youth in one major urban center, this study compares how participation in differently positioned political activities influences participants’ sociopolitical identities and their views of the most effective mechanisms for social change. Specifically, this research compares youth involved in a government-sanctioned youth commission, developed to advise policymakers, with youth involved in a community-based youth organizing …
Challenging Freedom: Neoliberalism And The Erosion Of Democratic Education, Robert Karaba
Challenging Freedom: Neoliberalism And The Erosion Of Democratic Education, Robert Karaba
Democracy and Education
Goodlad, et al. (2002) rightly point out that a culture can either resist or support change. Schein’s (2010) model of culture indicates observable behaviors of a culture can be explained by exposing underlying shared values and basic assumptions that give meaning to the performance. Yet culture is many-faceted and complex. So Schein advised a clinical approach to cultural analysis that calls for identifying a problem in order to focus the analysis on relevant values and assumptions.
This project starts with two assumptions: (1) The erosion of democratic education is a visible overt behavior of the current U.S. macro-culture, and (2) …

The Transformation Of High-Risk Youth: An Assessment Of A Faith-Based Program In South Africa, Bennett M. Judkins, Karen Mundy
Interdisciplinary Journal of Best Practices in Global Development
This paper considers the case of Outward Bound South Africa (OBSA), an outdoor adventure education program specifically designed for disadvantaged youth in the aftermath of apartheid in South Africa. Founded by American philanthropist Charles Stetson, the goal of OBSA is to provide recourse for South Africans who are victims of history and culture. OBSA seeks to instill values and to create economic empowerment for at-risk youth in the midst of severe social and economic deprivation. Recently, OBSA initiated a faith-based component to their program that follows many of the tenets of the original founder of Outward Bound, German educator Kurt …

Expanding Our Horizons: Alternative Approaches To Practitioner Research, Stephen P. Gordon
Journal of Practitioner Research
The author presents five types of educator practitioner inquiry: pragmatic research, lesson study, appreciative inquiry, collaborative autobiography, and equity research. Examples of each type of research carried out by K-12 practitioners are provided. The particular type of research that educators select should depend on the purpose of the research, preference of participants, researcher and facilitator capacity, and available resources. Predictors of success include commitment of researchers and leadership, professional learning on how to use the type of research selected, time to carry out the research, continued support, and recognition of the research and the researchers.
Impact Of Chronological Age Differences On The Academic Performance Of Students In A First-Grade Classroom, Astrid I. Rodriguez
Impact Of Chronological Age Differences On The Academic Performance Of Students In A First-Grade Classroom, Astrid I. Rodriguez
Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research
In this study, the researchers investigated whether chronological age differences had an impact on the academic performance of students in first grade. Twenty-nine (29) first-grade students were assessed and observed. Their teachers also provided data on their performance through interviews and grade reports. Participating students ranged in age from seventy-three (73) to ninety-two (92) months. Performance data was collected for the core subjects of mathematics and reading in both numerical and narrative forms. Data was then analyzed for relevant patterns. Participants were classified as either younger (≤85 months) or older (≥86 months). The younger group showed difficulties in mathematics, while …
