Using Brain-Based Interventions To Address Ninth Grade Students’ Misconceptions About Newton’S Laws: Descriptions Of Secondary Teachers’ Action Research, Deborah Brown

The Advocate

This study describes four secondary physics teachers’ action research investigations and perceptions of the action research process. Each of the action research projects used key aspects of brainbased teaching to address students’ misconceptions about physics. Foremost among these were the use of technology and collaborative work with peers; these approaches enabled students to make meaningful connections, do a learning activity, and demonstrate understanding. The projects yielded positive effects on post assessments of students’ understanding. The four teachers reported numerous benefits from doing action research, though they noted several important caveats.

An Examination Of External Influences And Internal Issues Challenging Teacher Education Today, Jill Gonzalez-Bravo, Donna Augustine-Shaw

The Advocate

Today’s educators are not solely content experts, but reflective practitioners competent in theory and complex learning processes. They are obligated to construct classrooms to meet the diverse needs of each child within a culture of global competition and increased levels of accountability. Prior studies amplify a necessary focus on preparing teachers capable of meeting the needs of each student from day one on the job. However, a myriad of obstacles facing teacher preparation identified throughout research provide clear direction for additional attention. The following is an investigation of external influences and internal issues that challenged the current model of teacher …

Observation And Feedback In Walkthrough Visits: Traditional Vs. Distance Supervision Settings, Allison Rothwell, Twyla Sprouse Apr 2016

Observation And Feedback In Walkthrough Visits: Traditional Vs. Distance Supervision Settings, Allison Rothwell, Twyla Sprouse

The Advocate

During student teaching, many on-site university supervisors implement quick observations in order to gather more informal data about the classrooms in which they observe and better understand the role student teachers are playing at different points within the semester. While these short walkthrough observations are effective at the beginning of the semester, the data quickly becomes unbalanced between student teachers, and supervisors often have to begin scheduling the visits in order to collect more specific, balanced information. This article examines the effectiveness of the onsite walkthrough when compared to video walkthrough observations implemented within a distance supervision model.

Rural Community College Student Perceptions Of Barriers To College Enrollment, Shanda Scott, Michael T. Miller, Adam A. Morris Apr 2016

Rural Community College Student Perceptions Of Barriers To College Enrollment, Shanda Scott, Michael T. Miller, Adam A. Morris

Academic Leadership Journal in Student Research

Rural community college students face unique difficulties in higher education for many reasons, including the resources they typically have access to, their collective histories, and in many cases, the preparation they received in high school. These challenges might be low-performing secondary schools, a lack of tradition and precedence in attending college, and even limited technology connectivity. These difficulties can be seen as barriers to college attendance, and it is important to understand how rural community college students see these barriers, and even more important to understand how they can be overcome. The current study sought to take the first step …

Graduate Expectations And Experiences: Business Degrees Delivered Through Vocational And Academic Partnership, Peter Richardson

International Journal for Business Education

Non-traditional ways of achieving a business qualification are becoming more common and popular internationally. In this case study from New Zealand, a joint delivery model including full credit between two higher education institutions, a vocational-based polytechnic and a traditional university, shows the strong foundations that can be built to assist a diverse student group moving into higher levels of study.
A representative sample of graduates (2009-2014) from the New Zealand Diploma in Business taught at a polytechnic who then progressed to a business or management degree with a partner university were surveyed to gauge student expectations and experiences of both …

Promote Interculturalism, Leadership Communication, And Professionalism In Your Students: Success With A Corporate Communication Certificate, Lana W. Carnes, Marcel Robles, Faridah Awang

International Journal for Business Education

Business educators share a common interest in encouraging their students to improve intercultural, leadership communication, and professionalism skills to enable and promote increased fulfilment, character development, and advancement toward graduation, in addition to improving student employability after graduation. While career success depends on the standards and knowledge of character and behavioral traits, much more than on technical knowledge, these attributes define the qualities desired across various professions (Barnhart, 2013) in these three areas. For example, Holmes (2015) found that the values and communication rules of discourse systems may be different from that which is expected in the international workplace.

Perceptions Of Information And Communications Technology (Ict) For Instructional Delivery At A University: From Technophobic To Technologically Savvy, Desmond Wesley Govender Dr, Lockias Chitanana Mr

The African Journal of Information Systems

Changing academics’ perceptions of information and communications technology (ICT) in developing countries has always been a challenge. A university in Zimbawe has witnessed an about-turn in lecturers’ perceptions and beliefs about technology, from being negative (technophobic) to positive (technologically savvy) users of technology. This paper reports on the interplay of factors that resulted in lecturers’ buy-in to the use of e-learning as a mode of instructional delivery. The study employed actor network theory (ANT) as both a methodological and analytical framework to trace the trajectory of the e-learning programme at this university. The conspicuous actors were followed using questionnaires, participant …

The Role Of Educational Technology In Design And Delivery Of Curricula Programmes: A Case Of Steps At A University Of Technology, Patient Rambe Dr

The African Journal of Information Systems

While Universities of Technologies (UoTs) regard the adoption of educational technology for the creation of effective learning environments as one of their defining features, there is limited research on these universities’ innovative use of technologies to transform their curricula design and delivery. This research explores the extent to which educational technology has been integrated into the implementation of new and recurriculated educational programmes under the Strategic Transformation of Educational Programmes and Structures (STEPS) at a UoT. The research employed document analysis and interview data from middle level managers (Deans), curriculum designers and educational technologists. The findings suggest that, except for …

Insiders' Perspectives On Project Based Learning: A Comparison Of Us And Israeli Approaches, Sharon Tamir, Barbara Withers

International Journal for Business Education

High school students and teachers in two countries (US and Israel) were interviewed to ascertain their perspectives about their Project Based Learning (PBL) experiences. Perspectives were evaluated to determine to what degree PBL approaches were based on the eight essential elements of PBL and whether PBL courses contributed effectively to workplace preparedness. Differences between teachers and students and between countries were identified. Results revealed that PBL programs incorporating the eight essential elements are more effective in preparing students to enter today’s work environment. Students perceive stronger benefits from their PBL experiences than teachers perceive. Additionally, the perspectives of Israeli teachers …

How Money Helps Keep Students In College: The Relationship Between Family Finances, Merit-Based Aid, And Retention In Higher Education, Alexandre M. Olbrecht, Christopher Romano, Jeremy Teigen

Journal of Student Financial Aid

In this paper, we leverage detailed, individual-level student data to understand the relationships between family finances, merit-based aid, and first-year student retention. With three cohorts of student data that comprise family financial status, institutional merit scholarships, and many of the other known correlates of student retention, we regress sophomore retention of first-time, full-time students on the financial variables with controls. We find that an increase in a family’s ability to contribute to educational costs improves a student’s chances of retention. Additionally, our data show that institutional financial assistance also bolsters the likelihood that students return for their sophomore year.

Are Student Loan Default Rates Linked To Institutional Capacity?, Terry T. Ishitani, Sean A. Mckitrick

Journal of Student Financial Aid

As more undergraduates have taken out loans to attend college, the number of borrowers who fail to repay their student loans has increased. While previous research has focused on students’ likelihood to default, this study employed institutional cohort default rates (CDRs) as an outcome variable. Using Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System, this study investigated the association between institutional effectiveness and CDRs. Coupled with multilevel modeling, the study also observed the effects of state-level factors, such as state appropriation and unemployment, on CDRs. The results showed that institutional characteristics—e.g., proportion of minority students, admission test scores, retention rates, and instructional expenses—are …

The Conflict Of Commodification Of Traditional Higher Education Institutions, Jarrad Plante Apr 2016

The Conflict Of Commodification Of Traditional Higher Education Institutions, Jarrad Plante

Academic Leadership Journal in Student Research

Moving into the 21st century, the landscape of the traditional higher education institution has changed, including its model of conducting business. Students in the millennial generation see higher education as a commodity, where learning can be acquired through different delivery systems. It is imperative that organizational leaders, like those in colleges and universities, improve, effectively responding to changing environments at their institutions. Double-loop learning (Rahim, 2011; Senge, 2013) is a formative method of organizational effectiveness that allows top managers to focus on the underpinning of conflicts like commodification of higher education and use strategic decision-making processes to recognize and accept …

In Search Of A Proper Role For First-Year Composition In The Two-Year Open-Enrollment College, Stephen M. Combs

Academic Leadership Journal in Student Research

The search for a common model of instruction in first-year composition began in the 1960s when composition first began to separate from literature in college English departments. Because writing is essentially a methods course with no standard curriculum as one might find in physics or economics, a common model has been elusive. A sign that consensus may be developing came in 2011 when an alliance of three professional organizations published its “Framework for Success in Postsecondary Writing.” Its recommendations consist of departures from some of the discipline’s long-cherished practices. Many of these recommendations appeared in scholarly articles more than three …
