An Emg Comparison Of Muscle Recruitment Associated With The Wide Grip Pull-Up And The Lat Pull-Down Exercise, Marla S. Bauermeister Apr 1996

An Emg Comparison Of Muscle Recruitment Associated With The Wide Grip Pull-Up And The Lat Pull-Down Exercise, Marla S. Bauermeister

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to describe and compare the prime mover muscles used in the wide grip pull-up and lat pull-down exercises. Ten Western Michigan University students performed the 2 exercises, using a resistance equal to their body weight for 3 sets of 3 repetitions, with 2 min rest between sets. The 2nd repetition of each set was analyzed for each exercise. Research variables included phases (concentric, coupling, and eccentric), exercises, trials, and muscles. The dependent variables were relative time to peak recruitment, peak recruitment, and phase time. Findings revealed that the concentric and eccentric phases were slower …

More Than Spelling: Widening The Lens On Emergent Writing., Marilyn L. Chapman Apr 1996

More Than Spelling: Widening The Lens On Emergent Writing., Marilyn L. Chapman

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Reading can sometimes be a transforming experience. This was the case for me when I first read Glenda Bissex's (1980) book, Gnys at Wrk many years ago. Although Bissex was not the originator of the notion that young children invent spellings through a process of active problem solving (the first being Read, 1975), it was my introduction to the concept of emergent writing. Bissex's case study of her son's writing development was so richly descriptive that it changed for ever the way I and many others will look at young children's writing. Now it seems commonplace to talk about the …

Student Choices: Book Selection Strategies Of Fourth Graders, Sherry Kragler, Christine Nolley Apr 1996

Student Choices: Book Selection Strategies Of Fourth Graders, Sherry Kragler, Christine Nolley

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

In many literature-based reading programs, students are encouraged to self-select their own reading materials. However, self-selection causes apprehensions for many teachers. They are concerned not only about their students' ability to select books that are appropriate for their reading level but they are also concerned about the types of books the students may choose. Consequently many teachers may decide to use anthologies or whole class texts where they maintain some control over the students' reading material. However, student interest and student choice should be an integral part of an elementary reading program if students are going to beturned onto reading …

Management Education: Valuing 'Differences' In The Classroom, Gloria Gordon Phd Apr 1996

Management Education: Valuing 'Differences' In The Classroom, Gloria Gordon Phd

Gloria Gordon PhD

In this paper a discussion is presented for the inclusion of the valuing of 'differences' between people as the cornerstone of hospitality management education curricula using a three-pronged approach. The models advocated for achieving this aim are 'identity development' (Myers, 1991), Action Learning (Revans, 1969) and Awareness and Competence (Howells, 1982). It is argued that the nature of the hospitality industry and the global environment which it serves demands such educational processes if self-aware, critical and ethical managers are to be developed. Empowerment of students through the development of critical thinking skills will enable them to become aware and reflective …

Klipsun Magazine, 1996, Volume 26, Issue 04 - April, Kristi Kiteley

Klipsun Magazine

During the last production of Klipsun, one of our editors brought in what was then the newest issue of Rolling Stone. To say the least, we were disappointed. We weren’t shocked that Jennifer Aniston was featured nude on the cover. We weren’t shocked that Rolling Stone would use sex appeal to draw in readers. We all were, however, disappointed in Rolling Stone's blatant portrayal of women as sex objects. This time it was just too obvious and too extreme.

We discussed the trend of Rolling Stone placing scantily-clad women on the front cover, while showing men in T-shirts …

Validation Of The Original And Modified Ymca Cycle Ergometer Tests, Joel V. Blakeman Apr 1996

Validation Of The Original And Modified Ymca Cycle Ergometer Tests, Joel V. Blakeman

Masters Theses

The problem of the study was to determine if a 3-point estimation procedure for the YMCA cycle ergometer submaximal test (YMOD) provided a more valid predictor of maximal oxygen consumption (VO2 max) than the recommended 2-point estimation YMCA procedure for male and female college students ages 18 to 25 years. Apparently healthy subjects (n = 21 females; n = 25 males) completed the ACSM maximal cycle ergometer test, the YMCA test, and the YMOD test. The reliability estimates of modified YMCA max scores, R = .39, was higher than the reliability estimate from the YMCA, R = -.80. ANOVA results …
