A Narrative Inquiry On Public Middle School Teachers Experiences With Demoralization, Jessica E. Alfieri

Doctor of Education Program Dissertations

Teachers may become demoralized when they feel they are unable to access the moral rewards of teaching. Some moral rewards of teaching include building relationships with students, adjusting methods of instruction that impacts individual student growth, and completing a creative and engaging lesson plan. The purpose of this qualitative narrative inquiry was to explore the experiences of public middle school teachers with demoralization in the context of their teaching environments. Six participants who self-identified as demoralized completed semi-structured interviews over Zoom. These interviews were then restoried into narratives, then manually coded into themes. The themes that were developed included time …

Per Se Inequality: A Review Of Judge Richard Gergel's "Unexampled Courage", Daniel Coble

Seattle University Law Review SUpra

On a cool winter night in 1946, Isaac Woodard, Jr. was on his way home after serving in the United States Army in World War II. Woodard would not make it home – at least not as the same man he had been. He would be beaten, blinded, and jailed. What would follow from this incident, and so many more, was an awakening to the cruel and unjust treatment of African Americans throughout the nation. However, this awakening and action would not come over night. It would be fought on many fronts: from Judge Waties Waring’s courtroom, to the Oval …

Covid-19 Reflection, Anonymous Feb 2023

Covid-19 Reflection, Anonymous

Community Reflections

The COVID-19 Pandemic was one of the most difficult times in recent history for not only the infected, but also the general public. When COVID-19 first became an issue in the United States with schools closing down for two weeks in March of 2020, I was a junior attending a private, all-boys high school. When the school officially closed, we began virtual classes which was a difficult adjustment due to classes being taught on Zoom and the schedules of classes being strangely different. This form of learning was difficult for me personally.

Teaching With Collective Resilience During Covid-19: Korean Teachers And Collaborative Professionalism, Minseok Yang, Yujin Oh, Sunbin Lim, Taeyeon Kim

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

This study applies system-focused resilience and collaborative professionalism to examine how teachers in Korea collectively developed resilience and transformed teaching during COVID-19. Using qualitative data from seven individual interviews and four focus groups, we found Korean teachers navigated complex challenges (rapidly changing policies, online teaching, exacerbated learning gaps, and excessive social pressure) and utilized contextual resources (collective autonomy and flexibility, solidity and solidarity, and collective responsibility) to develop strategies (collaborative inquiry, timely communication, and envisioning the future of schooling). The study extends teacher resilience toward more collective and communal, from the individual level, by linking resilience to collaborative systemic changes. …

Positive Influences On Why They Stay: A Qualitative Study On The Contributing Factors To Teacher Retention In Rural North Dakota, Jennifer Jung Feb 2023

Positive Influences On Why They Stay: A Qualitative Study On The Contributing Factors To Teacher Retention In Rural North Dakota, Jennifer Jung

The Interactive Journal of Global Leadership and Learning

In the United States, a considerable amount of educators leave the field within the first five years of employment. Midwestern rural schools experience a slightly higher turnover percentage than do their urban counterparts. Due to this shortage of teachers, many districts have employed strategies to recruit and retain effective teachers. Although many studies focus on the reasons teachers exit the profession, this study identifies the positive factors of why teachers remain in a rural North Dakota school. This qualitative study employed a phenomenological approach which generated common themes among long-staying teachers in a rural district. Both the social constructivism and …

First Generation Preservice Teachers’ Self-Efficacy Regarding The Teaching Of Diverse Students And The Incorporation Of Diverse Topics Into Classroom Content, Roberto Ch. Nava, Peter M. Vigil, Jan P. Evenstad

The Interactive Journal of Global Leadership and Learning

The purpose for this study was to examine whether there is a difference in self-efficacy between first generation and non-first generation preservice teachers to address the teaching of diverse PK-12 students. Bandura’s (1997) concept of self-efficacy was employed as a framework to understand the results of the study. A cross-sectional design was used to analyze a self-efficacy survey that was administered to first generation and non-first generation preservice teachers. A total of 55 preservice teachers nearing completion of their teacher preparation at one university participated. The data demonstrates statistically significant differences of unequal self-efficacy development between first generation and non-first …
