Barriers Minorities Need To Overcome To Achieve The Homeownership Dream, Nieves Gomez

Community Engagement Student Work

Buying a house is a dream that many people want to achieve; for some families obtaining a house is synonymous with stability. It is a home sweet home. It is having the right place to see the kids grow and thrive with a secure education, health, a good neighborhood, work for their parents, and a way to build wealth. It is the space for families to become real families. For a long time in the United States, minorities have had to overcome many obstacles to achieve their dream of acquiring a home. Despite the fact that there are federal policies …

With the rising cost of college education, campuses have enacted creative solutions to help improve the effects of food insecurity across this population. Upon analyzing this societal issue locally, a gap in food security resources was identified at Merrimack College. As a …

Equity Through Partnership: Overcoming Barriers To Family-School Partnership In K-12 School Settings, Keely L. Mccaskie Apr 2023

Equity Through Partnership: Overcoming Barriers To Family-School Partnership In K-12 School Settings, Keely L. Mccaskie

Community Engagement Student Work

Over the last few decades, it has become widely accepted that family-school partnership is an essential strategy to support the success of all students in K-12 school settings. However, despite this fact, policies and practices within the realm of family-school partnership remain largely undeveloped and inconsistent across the U.S, particularly in schools serving students from non-dominant backgrounds. There are several reasons for this, including the fact that theoretical frameworks in the field have remained limited in scope, and that there is a demonstrated lack of training for educators in the domain of family-school partnership. Nevertheless, there now exist some promising …

An Enhanced Disability Act: The Social Benefits Of Consistent Compliance And Comprehensive Training, Kylie Ford Apr 2023

An Enhanced Disability Act: The Social Benefits Of Consistent Compliance And Comprehensive Training, Kylie Ford

Community Engagement Student Work

In 1990, the most comprehensive and protective policy impacting those with disabilities was enacted. Since then, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was amended in 2008; therefore, one of the major legislations in place to encourage equity regarding disability has only been formally modified once in over 30 years. Despite ADA’s place within legislation, individuals with disabilities have remained the victims of stigmatization, discrimination and mistreatment. It is essential to analyze and enhance this policy in order to truly protect the disabled community.

How Prepared Are Educators To Work With Students Of Color, Ja're Thorn Apr 2023

How Prepared Are Educators To Work With Students Of Color, Ja're Thorn

Dissertations

From what I have experienced, there has been a lack of preparation when it comes to preparing educators to work with students of color. This research aimed to explore the importance of early childhood teachers’ cultural preparation programs when it comes to working effectively with students of color. Most of the time, teachers teach to the common core standards set in place by the state. They also implement a curriculum that is considered “best practices” for students instead of paying attention to and considering the individual student’s specific culture, family, and community values and ways of life before planning (Spies, …

Cultivating Community In A Sixth-Grade Classroom: An Action Research Study, Jennifer Weller Wells Apr 2023

Cultivating Community In A Sixth-Grade Classroom: An Action Research Study, Jennifer Weller Wells

Theses and Dissertations

Students who experience trauma bring this trauma to school with them in the form of exaggerated behaviors—acting out or withdrawing, being violent or extremely passive, or exhibiting rudeness or academic difficulty. Because students react to trauma in many ways, there is no one way for teachers to respond. The classroom community is vulnerable to the sheer unpredictability of behaviors. Grounded in ecological systems theory, whole-child theory, and compassionate teaching theory, this study explored my efforts to mitigate the results of trauma and increase the sense of community and well-being in my sixth-grade classroom. During the last few weeks of the …

The Effects Of Gamified Peer Feedback On Student Writing In High School English Language Arts, Kerise Amaris Broome

Theses and Dissertations

National assessments on writing show that student proficiency is low in part because many high school students lack revision skills. Compounding the problem is that as classroom sizes grow, teachers have less time to give the feedback that students need to improve. Peer feedback shows promise in being able to solve the feedback problem, but it must be carefully structured to be effective. The purpose of this action research was to evaluate the impact of gamified peer feedback in a high school English Language Arts classroom at Southern Charter High School. Three research questions guided this study: (1) What impact …

Electronic Portfolios In A High School Community Of Practice: Action Research Exploring Writing Experiences In An Advanced Placement Writing Course, Archibald Franklin Harrison Iv Apr 2023

Electronic Portfolios In A High School Community Of Practice: Action Research Exploring Writing Experiences In An Advanced Placement Writing Course, Archibald Franklin Harrison Iv

Theses and Dissertations

The underlying assumption of this study is that writing as a process has profound implications for success and fulfillment both in and beyond the classroom. A second assumption is that electronic portfolios provide students a space to write, revise, reflect, share, and explore themselves as writers. Students who engage with and embrace the writing process to the point that they self-identify as writers may be more likely to not only succeed at academic writing tasks but to integrate writing into their future lives (Lengelle and Meijers, 2014). For writing to play a prolonged role in this level of academic, professional …

The purpose of this action research was to implement and evaluate the impact of technology-focused personalized professional learning on participants’ use of and attitudes towards classroom technology. It attempted to show that modeling technology integration in professional learning opportunities for educators could have …

The Role Of Story In The Creation And Life Of Man, Leah Ginion Apr 2023

The Role Of Story In The Creation And Life Of Man, Leah Ginion

Senior Honors Theses

Story was created by God as a vehicle for the revelation and glorification of Himself. Man, made in the image of God, was created as an innate storyteller. The world was created through story, and story is how it progresses and is sustained. As such, story is the foundation of all culture and the most natural and effective method of human communication. Research points to all of man’s stories being derivatives of the Great Story: the metanarrative of Scripture. Exploring man’s relationship with story reveals his place within the metanarrative and ultimately provides evidence for the existence and active presence …

Cultivating The Guerrera Spirit: Forming Social Justice Warriors Through Latina Empowerment And Development, Valeria Garcia-Lara

Community Engagement Student Work

The presence of the Latina/x community in the U.S. is loud and powerful. Constituting over 18% of the entire U.S. population and the fast-growing numbers that reflect the changing face of the country calls for an examination of current leadership narratives and demands a commitment to elevate and empower Latina leadership (U.S. Census Bureau, 2022). In a society divided by power and discrimination, it is crucial that Latinas and Women of Color (WOC) have access to spaces that cultivate and celebrate their unique gifts and talents which are often overlooked and undervalued. This project gathered WOC from the Chica Project …

Gaming To Learn Genetics, Sarah Wolfe Apr 2023

Gaming To Learn Genetics, Sarah Wolfe

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

Digital game-based learning is an alternative to traditional lecture learning. It involves active engagement with concepts in a digital game setting and can apply to a variety of subjects, including STEM fields. We examined this type of learning in the context of an undergraduate introductory genetics course: specifically, use of a genetics video game for teaching. There were two groups: an experimental group that played the genetics game Geniventure, and a control group that read and studied Powerpoint lecture slides. Both groups took a pretest and posttest, as well as completed an I/D (interest/deprivation) scale and workload scale. There …

Adverse Childhood Experiences And School Productivity: What Is The Role Of Social Networks And Religion, Fahima Noor Ali

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are traumatic events children experience that can have lifelong impacts (Blodgett & Lanigan, 2018). These traumatic events may include verbal, physical, or sexual abuse, as well as family stress or dysfunction, such as the loss of a parent, incarcerated family members, substance use, economic hardships, community violence, and natural disasters. Research shows ACEs are associated with negative psychological impacts such as anxiety and depression (Zare et al., 2018). While previous research emphasized an examination of negative mental and other health outcomes, the current study sought to examine further how ACEs are associated with negative educational outcomes. …

Just Choices? Judicial Selection, Ideology, And Partisanship In The Ohio Supreme Court, Margo D'Agostino Apr 2023

Just Choices? Judicial Selection, Ideology, And Partisanship In The Ohio Supreme Court, Margo D'Agostino

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

This thesis joins the conversation on judicial selection and impacts on judicial ideology. This is a multifaceted question that engages with the history of judicial selection, differences between states, growing polarization and partisanship, and an influx in campaign spending that can all influence Justices’ behavior while on the bench. While other theorists have used more quantitative or statistical analytics, more research is still needed on the nuanced and qualitative questions surrounding the judiciary in the United States, especially on the state level. I look at three Ohio Supreme Court Justices—Maureen O’Connor, Jennifer Brunner, and Sharon Kennedy—and decisions they have penned …

Amplifying Marginal Voices Of The Global Movement For Deeper Learning: A Case Study Of A Rural K-12 Mission School In Cambodia, Mark Peter L. Lopez S.J.

LMU/LLS Theses and Dissertations

Several paradigms have been developed to define what constitutes deeper learning, how to foster it, and what desired outcomes or competencies can result from it. Much of the literature, however, has been based on studies in economically developed Western countries. There has been little, if any, that is based on developing country settings where culture and context can account for differences in the manner of promoting deeper learning. This qualitative case study explored the experiences of learners in the Mudita Mission School (MMS; pseudonym), a K-12 school in a rural part of northern Cambodia, and investigated how deeper learning was …
