Correlates Of Attitudes Toward Academic And Physical Inclusive Practices For Students With Disabilities And Selected Leadership Behaviors Among Middle School Principals In North Carolina, Mary Houser, Virginia Dickens, Terence Hicks
Faculty Working Papers from the School of Education
The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between attitudes toward academic and inclusive practices for students with disabilities and selected leadership behaviors (transformational and transactional) among principals in North Carolina. Participants for this study were randomly selected middle school principals from public schools in North Carolina. This study used a one-group, correlational design, using two instruments. The results of this study found a significant relationship between academic and physical inclusive practices and transformational leadership behaviors, r (75) =.320, p <. 0 I). However, no significant relationship was found between academic and physical inclusive practices and transactional leadership behaviors, r (72) = -.068, p <.05 . The findings for this study suggest that the more North Carolina middle school principals demonstrated transformational leadership behaviors, the more positive their attitudes were toward academic and physical inclusive practices for students with disabilities.

Critical Reading And Writing: A Literary Project For Non-English Majors With Thinking Tools, Ai Chun Yen
Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)
This paper discusses how EFL non-English majors’ critical reading and writing awareness in English can be developed in a literature-based class for general education. This module was designed for non-English majors to read the classic literary texts with e-story mapping (hereafter called the “Literary Project” or the “Project”) at Dong Hwa University, Taiwan. The Literary Project centered on how context shaped students’ critical reading and writing skills and to further their knowledge management. The 4P model—plan-produce-publish-present—was introduced in the frst class and framed in such a way as to contextualize reading analytically frst and later writing academically. At the same …

Teaching In An Efl Program In Second Life: Student Teachers’ Perspectives And Implications, Charles Xiaoxue Wang, Mary L. Lefaiver, Christy Hunt, Qi Wang
Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)
Educational researchers have paid considerable attention to the use of multi-user virtual environments (MUVEs) to support learning across curricula. Among those MUVEs, Second Life (SL) is one of the most popular. This paper reports on a study of student teachers’ experience of teaching English in an experimental EFL (English as a Foreign Language) program in Second Life (SL) with students in China. This study was a collaborative effort of faculty members and graduate students of both a state university in the USA and a provincial university in China. The study took a case study approach to reveal student teachers’ perceptions …

Helping Teachers Develop Positive Dispositions About Technology-Based Learning: What A Brief Global Learning Project Revealed, Carol A. Smith, Heather Schugar, Cynthia A. Moyer
Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)
Research indicates that teachers’ dispositions significantly influence their integration of computer technology into classroom instruction. This article reports findings from a mixed-methods study that examined shifts in teachers’ dispositions about learning that occurs through information and communication technologies (ICT’s). Graduate students and remote professionals engaged in a one-semester learning project that included synchronous and asynchronous computer-mediated discussions of course content. The study sought to determine whether or not this exposure to ICT-based learning might be accompanied by a positive or negative affective shift, and to identify the salient features of such a shift. Quantitative analysis of responses on questionnaires administered …

A Multiple Aspects Quantitative Indicator For Ability Of English Vocabulary: Vocabulary Quotient, Hong-Fa Ho, Chen Huong
Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)
tudents of EFL have a common problem with insufficient vocabulary. Some studies argue that English vocabulary is one of the most difficult parts. This paper applied the idea of KPI (Key Performance Indicator) from management science to EFL vocabulary learning and teaching. A vocabulary quotient (VQ in short) with four test models, including a listening comprehension test, was proposed as KPIs. Based on VQ, VQ testing software was developed. To test the validity and reliability of the assessment tool based on VQ, assessments with 54 junior high students (n=54) was conducted. The findings of this study were generalized as the …

Action To Acquisition—Boost Students’ English Learning Motivation With Filmmaking Project, Cheng-Ting Chen, Kuo-Chen Li
Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)
In Taiwan, English is more a major subject matter for student to “study” in school rather than a language for people to use in real life situations. Under the situation, students tend to have lower learning motivation when come to English classes, especially in higher academic settings, like universities. In order to boost students’ learning motivation as well as to encourage their productivity and creativity at the same time, a preliminary action research was conducted by two researchers collaboratively whereas one researcher is the instructor simultaneously. The major focus of the action research is concerning the application of “filmmaking” as …

Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)
Although explorations on cell phone-based learning (C-learning) in the field of teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) has been gaining increasing attention in the last 10 years, the explorations are constrained mainly to distance language teaching. Researchers have pointed out that mobile devices are most effective when combined with group activities, traditional educational activities, and other information and communication technologies (Librero, Ramos, Ranga, Trinona, & Lambert, 2007; Stead, 2005). The purpose of this study was to investigate the integration of a C-learning activity into a traditional EFL classroom by looking at students’ attitudes, technological readiness, perceived learning, and perceived …

Expanding The Conversation: Perspective Taking As A Civic Outcome Of College, Robert D. Reason
Expanding The Conversation: Perspective Taking As A Civic Outcome Of College, Robert D. Reason
Robert D Reason
The conversation about essential learning outcomes of college has never been more active or important. Although much of the attention on learning outcomes is narrowly focused on cognitive outcomes, especially critical thinking, the need to educate students for personal and social responsibility has never been clearer. In this article the author draws upon data from the Association of American Colleges and Universities’ Core Commitments: Educating Students for Personal and Social Responsibility initiative to argue that one dimension of personal and social responsibility, taking seriously the perspectives of others, is essential to active citizenship in today’s diverse democracy and, therefore, an …

In Their Own Words: Perspectives On Hbcu Institutional Quality From Hbcu Administrators, Chutney Nichole Walton
Doctoral Dissertations
College rankings such as US News & World Report (USNWR) are used as benchmarks for measuring quality in higher education (McManus-Howard, 2002). These ranking systems utilize traditional measures of academic excellence such as academic reputation, student selectivity, and financial resources, to assess institutional quality in higher education, which appear to disadvantage institutions with specialized missions such as historically Black colleges and universities. The purpose of this qualitative study was to describe indicators of the institutional quality of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) as identified by administrators at four different HBCUs.
Data were collected from 12 in-depth interviews with administrators …

Potential Benefits From Interacting With Nature: A Look At Outdoor Education For Children, Katie Webster
Potential Benefits From Interacting With Nature: A Look At Outdoor Education For Children, Katie Webster
Psychology and Child Development
With the increase of a fast paced lifestyle and more technology centered activities, children are spending an increased amount of time indoors. A decreased interaction with the natural environment is alarming to many researchers, including Richard Louv who has defined this lack of interaction as Nature Deficit Disorder, a disorder that may result in a diminished use of the senses, increased amount of attention difficulties and higher rates of physical and emotional illness. By engaging with nature, children will have the potential of concentrating and performing better within the classroom, to be more creative, are more cognitively and intellectually developed …

Student Use And Acceptance Of Video Podcasts In The Science Laboratory, Jessica Caron
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Educational technologies (e.g., computers, social software, personal response systems, and multimedia) have become commonplace in the higher education classroom; however, the full potential of this trend has yet to be realized in the laboratory setting. Technology integration into the undergraduate science laboratory is imperative if we are to, as Hofstein and Lunetta (2004) suggest, engage our current student populations in ways consistent with their experience, knowledge, and preferences. The incorporation of multimedia technologies into the laboratory is one way to meet this charge.Using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM),this study investigated the student acceptance and usage of podcasting in the undergraduate …

Explanatory Audiovisual about CPS Process
With this Master’s Project, my aim is to create a medium to help raise awareness of "Creative Problem Solving". To this end, I believe that the creation of audiovisual material could provide an excellent medium to be used as a support for explanation sessions, and that it will facilitate understanding, specially for the Spanish and Basque Country’s market, where the CPS process is still very unknown.
The idea behind creating this material, or the necessity to do so, arose from several educational, facilitation and training sessions that I have run. When working with groups of …
The Diffusion Of Environmental Literacy In An American Urban Community Through Children, Kelley Phillips
The Diffusion Of Environmental Literacy In An American Urban Community Through Children, Kelley Phillips
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
Environmental literacy is a contentious issue in the United States of America because citizens feel it is forced upon them and interferes with our materialistic culture. Also, many Americans have limited access to green space and little time to devote to increasing their environmental mindset. This project documents a technique to introduce environmental literacy to American citizens by working with single communities in a common subset of American culture. Based on a model used by anthropologists in third world countries, the goal was to diffuse environmental literacy into a community by only instructing the children of that community in environmental …

Designing A School Garden Space That Emphasizes Children's Wants And Uses Permaculture Design Methods, Mikhaela Mullins
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
A case study was organized at Saratoga Elementary school in Lincoln, Nebraska to obtain data on what children desire in a garden space. To collect this data a school garden space was constructed and an after school garden club was implemented. Students who participated in the after school garden club partook in the study by drawing their ideal garden. Elements that the subjects drew were identified and categorized into ‘highly desired’ and ‘somewhat desired’.
These elements were then incorporated into a proposed garden design plan for Saratoga. The proposal plan uses Permaculture design methods to emphasize sustainability.
