The Effects Of Covid-19 On The Mobile Payment Banking System, Sydney Mason

Senior Honors Theses

This study includes an examination of the effect of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on electronic payment apps. Ever since the pandemic caused a global shutdown, the banking industry was forced to adjust their usual operations and adopt new technological advancements that would allow for contactless payment. Consumers, worried about contracting the virus through the physical exchange of currency, resorted to utilizing payment apps. This contributed to the increase in electronic payment usage. This research addresses the effect of COVID-19 on three different electronic payment apps, Venmo, PayPal, and Zelle. A comparative longitudinal analysis shows the increase in total transactions from …

Channeling The Capital Of Others: How Luxembourg Came To Be Asset Managers’ "Plumber" Of Choice, Samuel Weeks Mar 2024

Channeling The Capital Of Others: How Luxembourg Came To Be Asset Managers’ "Plumber" Of Choice, Samuel Weeks

College of Humanities and Sciences Faculty Papers

This article analyzes the development and growth of the administrative practices and structures necessary for leading asset-management companies and other firms to create and sell their “product” of choice: investment funds. To investigate this problematic, I turn to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, which currently serves as the domicile for over $5 trillion in fund assets. Indeed, since the 1980s, Luxembourg’s “offshore” financial center has become a leader in providing the “plumbing,” to quote an interviewee of mine, for worldwide asset-manager capitalism. On offer in Luxembourg to asset managers are the routine-but-essential tasks such as domiciliation, compliance, calculation of net-asset …

Financial Characteristics Of Mobile Banking And Payment Users In The United States, Jordan Mitchell, Xiao Li, Doug Steel, Phillip Decker

Journal of Global Business Insights

This study aims to examine the personal finance characteristics of mobile banking and mobile payment users in the United States. To achieve this goal, we used the 2018 National Financial Capability Study, which surveyed over 27,000 American adults regarding their personal financial standing and behaviors. By using ordinary least squares models, our results indicated that the use of mobile banking and mobile payment technology was associated with lower age, Non-White Ethnicity, higher income, higher debt load, debt types (auto, student, credit card, and predatory), and spending more than one’s income. These results reveal that the higher one’s income, financial liabilities, …

On The Effects Of Information Asymmetry In Digital Currency Trading, Kwansoo Kim, Robert John Kauffman Mar 2024

On The Effects Of Information Asymmetry In Digital Currency Trading, Kwansoo Kim, Robert John Kauffman

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We report on two studies that examine how social sentiment influences information asymmetry in digital currency markets. We also assess whether cryptocurrency can be an investment vehicle, as opposed to only an instrument for asset speculation. Using a dataset on transactions from an exchange in South Korea and sentiment from Korean social media in 2018, we conducted a study of different trading behavior under two cryptocurrency trading market microstructures: a bid-ask spread dealer's market and a continuous trading buy-sell, immediate trade execution market. Our results highlight the impacts of positive and negative trader social sentiment valences on the effects of …

Physical Frictions And Digital Banking Adoption, Hyun Soo Choi, Roger Loh Nov 2023

Physical Frictions And Digital Banking Adoption, Hyun Soo Choi, Roger Loh

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The behavioral literature suggests that minor frictions can elicit desirable behavior without obvious coercion. Using closures of ATMs in a densely populated city as an instrument for small frictions to physical banking access, we find that customers affected by ATM closures increase their usage of the bank's digital platform. Other spillover effects of this adoption of financial technology include increases in point-of-sale (POS) transactions, electronic funds transfers, automatic bill payments and savings, and a reduction in cash usage. Our results show that minor frictions can help overcome the status-quo bias and facilitate significant behavior change.

Digital Wealth Management And Consumption: Micro Evidence From Individual Investments, Qian Gong, Mingyuan Ban, Yunjun Yu, Luying Wang, Yan Yuan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

With the rapid advancement of digital finance in China, accessing wealth management services through digital platforms has become considerably convenient. However, the potential impact of digital platform investments on residents' consumption remains a relatively unexplored question. This study addresses this gap by leveraging a unique dataset obtained from one of China's largest fintech companies, encompassing individual-level data on consumption and investment. Our findings indicate that engaging in digital platform investments can indeed stimulate residents' consumption. Importantly, participation in digital platform investment has an inclusive effect, with a more pronounced marginal impact on consumption among low-income residents and in-dividuals residing in …

Islamic Banks' Decomposed Financing And Industrial Output Growth In Pakistan, Sadia Yasmin, Mohammad Ayaz Dr Jan 2023

Islamic Banks' Decomposed Financing And Industrial Output Growth In Pakistan, Sadia Yasmin, Mohammad Ayaz Dr

Business Review

Abstract

Finance is considered as "the lifeblood of an economy" and imperative to a country's growth and stability. However, this perception has been called into two propositions, "More finance more growth "and "Does too much finance harm economic growth”? Existing literature considered only a single indicator i.e. total financing, assuming all financing has the same effect on growth. Furthermore, these studies also overlooked the nonlinear dynamics of Islamic decomposed financing and sectoral growth. As the composition of every economic sector is different, therefore financing can impact differently. This gap is covered in this study by decomposing Islamic financing into Islamic …

Retos Del Sector Exportador De Las Tecnologías De La Información Y Las Comunicaciones (Tic) En Colombia, Juan Camilo Pulido Fagua

Finanzas y Comercio Internacional

Generalization Of Digital Innovation For Financial Inclusion By Means Of Market Creation Through Regulation And Governance, Varsolo Sunio, Jaime Mendejar, Justin Reginald Nery, Jose Paolo Carlos Jan 2023

Generalization Of Digital Innovation For Financial Inclusion By Means Of Market Creation Through Regulation And Governance, Varsolo Sunio, Jaime Mendejar, Justin Reginald Nery, Jose Paolo Carlos

Finance and Accounting Faculty Publications

Achieving financial inclusion in shorter timeframes is a grand societal challenge that can be addressed by digital technology. Nonetheless, how an innovative digital technology gets generalized is understudied in the literature. We present the generalization of a cloud-based core banking system to drive financial inclusion in the Philippines. We draw our material from the case of cloud-based core banking system adoption in the Philippines. Our results show that market formation is essential to the generalization, and this can be accomplished through a mix of laissez-faire and dirigisme mechanisms. Pure laissez-faire mechanisms alone, with minimal intervention from the central bank, may …

A Psychological Profile Of The Digitized Economy: Who Buys Cryptocurrencies, Nfts, And Meme-Stocks (And Why)?, Nicole Wolfe

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

As the global digital economy continues to grow in interest and financial worth, it is imperative to harvest data to gain early information on this nuanced economy. Already, we have witnessed billions of dollars in losses and wins at the blink of an eye, encouragement to invest from well-known celebrities and politicians, and high anxiety from the newness, power consumption, and potential outcomes of this nuanced system. Stemming from the lack of solid evidence in this emerging field, we hope to gain more insight on the early players and variation within the digitized economy. Similarly, we hope to identify specific …

“Fiscal Trap”, The Case Of Greece, Titos Ritsatos Jul 2022

“Fiscal Trap”, The Case Of Greece, Titos Ritsatos

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

Present research aims at the introduction of the term “Fiscal Trap” in economic literature, as a comprehensive definition of the economic situation in which any available combination of fiscal-only policy measures (tax increases and austerity measures), would fail to fulfill fiscal targets during periods of recession. Using recent experience from the case of Greece, an ex-post evaluation of adopted policy effectiveness is pursued. Fiscal austerity and increased taxation enforced in Greece during the years 2009-2012, resulted in decreased tax revenues, lower GDP and increased debt-to-GDP ratio. In order to slip away from the vicious cycle generated by austerity and tax …

The Terrorist Laffer Curve:Rationality And Insurgency In Iraq, 2004-2008, Dennis S. Edwards Jul 2022

The Terrorist Laffer Curve:Rationality And Insurgency In Iraq, 2004-2008, Dennis S. Edwards

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

While the original framework by Arthur Laffer focused on tax rates and the resulting revenue from such taxation, the Laffer curve has been applied to other studies in behavior as well. This paper details evidence of a Laffer curve in Iraq with respect to terrorist violence and Iraqi public support of that violence against the U.S.-led coalition forces. As insurgents began killing more Iraqi citizens in their attacks on U.S.-led forces, the increased lethality caused initial support of such violence to erode. As a result, the high-level terrorist hierarchy has suggested that its operatives reduce lethality and indiscriminate bombings.

Central Bank Independence: An Examination Of Monetary And Economic Stability Through Ordinary And Extraordinary Times, Carroll Griffin, Yun Cheng Jun 2022

Central Bank Independence: An Examination Of Monetary And Economic Stability Through Ordinary And Extraordinary Times, Carroll Griffin, Yun Cheng

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

The idea of central bank independence (CBI) has been widely accepted over the last several decades by many countries around the world, both developed and developing. As such, many countries around the world granted autonomy to their central banks during the 1980s and 1990s. Although the majority of past studies have primarily examined the impact of central bank independence on inflation, there is only now sufficient date to empirically determine whether many of these claims are true. This study examines central bank independence over the long-term (1960 to 2015) to determine to what extent central bank independence has helped to …

Guess Who Is Not Using Mobile Money In Sub-Saharan Africa?, Aparna Gosavi Jun 2022

Guess Who Is Not Using Mobile Money In Sub-Saharan Africa?, Aparna Gosavi

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

Mobile money, which is a mobile-phone-based service, sends and/or receives money across a wide geographical area with just a touch of a mobile-phone button. This particular financial product was initially introduced in Kenya in the early part of 2007. Within the first six months of its introduction in Kenya, more than two million people enrolled for the service, partly because the utility emerged as a handy tool for urban migrants to send money back home to their families who resided in villages. This overwhelming response to the service was mainly because of its convenience, safety, and speed. Now, in Sub-Saharan …

Impairment Recognition And Revaluation– China Publicly Listed Companies, Ying Wang Jun 2022

Impairment Recognition And Revaluation– China Publicly Listed Companies, Ying Wang

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

The advent of SFAS 142 and IAS 36 regarding handling of asset impairment has spawned research into how these standards influence whether an impairment loss is recorded. Deferred tax items in China have three major components: temporary tax and financial reporting differences in depreciation; impairment losses; and previous losses, which can be carried forward for five years for tax purposes. While the temporary differences in depreciation typically defer taxes and create deferred tax liabilities, impairment losses and previous losses create deferred tax assets because they are not deductible in the current period for tax purposes. A deferred tax asset is …

Analysis Of The Comovement Of Unemployment In Midwestern States, Tammy Rapp Parker Jun 2022

Analysis Of The Comovement Of Unemployment In Midwestern States, Tammy Rapp Parker

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

The current paper investigates the interrelatedness of twelve Midwestern states through the comovement of unemployment rates. Due to their geographic location, we would anticipate similarities and comovement among macroeconomic variables. The results show that although most of the bivariate pairings do show a relationship. Five of the sixty-five pairings show no indication of cointegration among their unemployment rates. Each of these five pairings includes North Dakota. The paper investigates geographic and socioeconomic similarities between these states to try to explain these results.

Baumol And Bowen Cost Effects In Research Universities, Robert E. Martin Jun 2022

Baumol And Bowen Cost Effects In Research Universities, Robert E. Martin

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

We estimate cost models for both public and private research universities and use partial differentials from these models to estimate different cost effects. The results suggest both Baumol’s cost disease and Bowen’s revenue theory drive cost higher and that Bowen effects are larger than Baumol effects. Tight revenue since 2008 reversed some declines in productivity and accelerated the trend in economizing on the use of tenure track faculty. This behavior under loose and tight revenue constraints is consistent with Bowen’s revenue theory.

Credit Market Innovations And Gross Domestic Income, Ellis Heath Jun 2022

Credit Market Innovations And Gross Domestic Income, Ellis Heath

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

In this paper I compare the effects of different credit variables on real output in the US. However, instead of using real Gross Domestic Product as a proxy for real output, I use real Gross Domestic Income. I use a VAR framework with generalized impulse response functions and generalized variance decompositions. I look at a credit aggregate and different credit spreads. I find that shocks to some credit variables can have significant effects on real output; the reaction, however, is a temporary one. Specifically, measures of the risk premium and the term premium have the most importance in explaining innovations …

Tax Management, Ownership Structure And Corporate Governance, Ying Wang, Scott Butterfield Jun 2022

Tax Management, Ownership Structure And Corporate Governance, Ying Wang, Scott Butterfield

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

We use 2010-2018 publicly listed Chinese company data to analyze how ownership structure and corporate governance affects tax management. Our results indicate that diverse ownership structure might lower a company’s tax rates, whereas traditional corporate governance measures, such as board size, independent board member percentage and duality of CEO serving as chair do not affect tax.

The Way Digitalization Is Impacting International Financial Markets: Stock Price Synchronicity, Chen Chen, M. Mahdi Moeini Gharagozloo, Layla Darougar, Lei Shi Jan 2022

The Way Digitalization Is Impacting International Financial Markets: Stock Price Synchronicity, Chen Chen, M. Mahdi Moeini Gharagozloo, Layla Darougar, Lei Shi

Finance Faculty Publications

This paper investigates whether and how the development level of a country's digital economy affects stock price synchronicity. The results indicate that countries with high levels of digital economy development exhibit low stock price synchronicity. Additionally, by decomposing stock price synchronicity into systematic and firm‐specific stock return variations, we find that systematic (firm‐specific) variations of stock returns decrease (increase) with the level of a country's digitalization. These findings shed light on the future trend of stock price synchronicity in financial markets around the world and support the information‐based interpretation of stock price synchronicity.

The COVID-19 pandemic and rising demand for transparency has heightened the importance of sustainability communications on social media to generate deeper stakeholder engagement. Although B Corporations (B Corps), businesses committed to the triple bottom line (TBL), could serve as a catalyst for sustainable development, little is known about how they communicate on social media during a crisis. Therefore, we examined social media communications of B Corps to (1) identify salient topics and themes, (2) analyze how these themes align with the TBL, and (3) evaluate social media performance against industry benchmarks. We focused on the apparel, footwear, and accessories (AFA) …

Bitcoin: The Pioneer Of Cryptocurrency With A Limited Dream, Anna M. Gellerman, Benjamin Zheng

Publications and Research

BitCoin is the most well known and adaptable cryptocurrency today. Due to the evolvement of the cryptocurrency market, many are thinking what this could mean for society; is the world ready for a new mainstream medium of exchange? This poster argues that although BitCoin is functional for small scale payments, it is inadaptable to become a payment tool comparable to cash and card.
