Innovation And Employment: A Reinvestigation Using Revised Pavitt Classes, Mario Pianta, Francesco Bogliacino
Mario Pianta
The relationship between innovation and employment is addressed in this article through a model and empirical test at industry level for eight European countries in 1994–2004. We investigate this relationship for manufacturing and services and propose a Revised Pavitt taxonomy (covering both of them) in order to identify specific patterns of technological change and job creation and loss. The contrasting effects of strategies of technological or cost competitiveness are investigated using innovation variables from CIS2 and CIS3. Together with demand, wages and industry dynamics, they account for changes in employees and hours worked. The diversity in these relations across industries …

Cataloging and metadata services have reached a crossroads. The digital age presents fundamental challenges to building and describing collections of interest to the communities that libraries serve. Since the advent of the Web, what has been fundamental to libraries and higher education, what has constituted professional wisdom and best practice-all have been disrupted by new conditions. This article describes the environment in which libraries are operating and identifies the key trends driving change in metadata creation and management. It also outlines the characteristics of a next-generation metadata creation and management platform for libraries, which the OCLC cooperative is planning, to …

Changing Times And The Organisational Life Cycle, Graeme Cocks, Delyth Samuel
Changing Times And The Organisational Life Cycle, Graeme Cocks, Delyth Samuel
Graeme Cocks
All things go through a lifecycle. Organisations make mistakes. No organisation is perfect. All organisations, even winning ones, go backwards at some time in their lives. New businesses emerge from new ideas, grow, become mature and decline, unless new ideas reinvigorate them and fuel further growth. Companies go out of business over time as their operating environment changes and they fail to respond to the changes, whilst other businesses start up, taking advantage of the very factors that caused one business to close in order to grow their own. Sustained strong performance over time, through the changing lifecycle of the …

Spatial Variations In The Character Of Off-The-Books Entrepreneurship: Lessons From A Study Of Contrasting Districts In Moscow, Colin C. Williams
Spatial Variations In The Character Of Off-The-Books Entrepreneurship: Lessons From A Study Of Contrasting Districts In Moscow, Colin C. Williams
Colin C Williams
Although there is growing recognition that many entrepreneurs start-up trading partially or wholly off-the-books, few have evaluated whether the character of this hidden enterprise culture varies spatially. To begin to do so, this paper evaluates whether and how the nature of off-the-books entrepreneurship differs across an affluent, mixed and deprived district of Moscow. Drawing upon 313 face-to-face interviews, the finding is that wholly legitimate enterprises represent just the tip of the iceberg in Moscow. Beneath the surface in all the districts is a large hidden enterprise culture. However, off-the-books entrepreneurship in the affluent district is comprised more of registered businesses …
Entrepreneurship And The Informal Economy: An Overview, Colin C. Williams
Entrepreneurship And The Informal Economy: An Overview, Colin C. Williams
Colin C Williams
In recent decades, the field of entrepreneurship studies has become increasingly interested in the relationship between entrepreneurship and the informal economy. This paper reviews this burgeoning sub-field of entrepreneurship studies that recognizes how entrepreneurs do not always conduct their business affairs wholly by the rulebook. Evaluating this rapidly growing body of literature, it reviews the findings regarding the preponderance of entrepreneurs to engage in the informal economy, the nature of such informal entrepreneurship, the characteristics of informal entrepreneurs and the motives underpinning participation in such endeavor, along with the competing theories that have sought to explain engagement in this type …

Explaining The Off-The-Books Enterprise Culture Of Ukraine: Reluctant Or Willing Entrepreneurship?, Colin C. Williams
Colin C Williams
In recent years, there has been a growing realisation that beyond the realm of legitimate entrepreneurship is a large hidden enterprise culture composed of entrepreneurs conducting some or all of their trade off-the-books. Until now, however, few have evaluated how many entrepreneurs start-up their ventures trading off-the-books and why they do so. Reporting face-to-face interviews conducted in Ukraine during 2005-06 with 331 entrepreneurs, the finding is not only that the vast majority (90%) operate partially or wholly off-the-books but also that they are not all driven by necessity and as a last resort and survival strategy into entrepreneurship. Revealing how …

Building Social Capital Through Corporate Social Investment, David Cooke

Corporate support for the not-for-profit sector has been underestimated by many companies as a highly effective strategy to develop brand awareness, attract and retain top staff and build social capital. Some top australian companies have understood this and have well developed partnerships with the not-for-profit sector leading to mutually beneficial outcomes and positive societal impacts. In-depth interviews and case studies support this.
Safety Culture As A Contemporary Healthcare Construct: Theoretical Review And Research Assessment, Patrick Albert Palmieri
Safety Culture As A Contemporary Healthcare Construct: Theoretical Review And Research Assessment, Patrick Albert Palmieri
Patrick Albert Palmieri
GOAL. To analyze the theoretical underpinnings of safety culture and to provide an assessment about the state of safety culture research in healthcare. METHODS. First, we reviewed the concept of safety culture, including its origination, disciplinary influences, and associated theoretical tenets. By describing the literature and discussing the interchangeable use of the terms “safety attitude,” “safety climate,” and “safety culture,” we are able to present the conceptual attributes associated with safety culture and present a definition of safety culture. Then, we discuss the psychometric properties for the most widely used instruments in healthcare. The article concludes with a discussion of …

Safety Culture As A Contemporary Healthcare Construct: Theoretical Review, Research Assessment, And Translation To Human Resource Management., Patrick Albert Palmieri
Patrick Albert Palmieri
Through a number of comprehensive reviews, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) has recommended that healthcare organizations develop safety cultures in order to align delivery system processes with the workforce requirements to improve patient outcomes. Until health systems can provide safer care environments, patients remain at risk for suboptimal care and adverse outcomes. Health science researchers have begun to explore how safety cultures might act as an essential system feature to improve organizational outcomes. Since safety cultures are established via modification in employee safety perspective and work behavior, human resource professionals need to contribute to this developing organizational domain. The IOM …

The Impact Of Macroeconomic Uncertainty On Firms Changes In Financial Leverage, Atreya Chakraborty
The Impact Of Macroeconomic Uncertainty On Firms Changes In Financial Leverage, Atreya Chakraborty
Atreya Chakraborty
We investigate the relationship between a firm’s measures of corporate gov- ernance, macroeconomic uncertainty and changes in leverage. Recent research highlights the role of governance in financing decisions. Previous research also indicates that macroeconomic uncertainty affects a firm’s ability to borrow. In this paper we investigate how both these channels of influence affects firms’ financing decisions. Our findings show that macroeconomic uncertainty has an important role to play, both by itself and in interaction with a measure of corporate governance.
Veil-Piercing, Peter B. Oh
Veil-Piercing, Peter B. Oh
Peter B. Oh
From its inception veil-piercing has been a scourge on corporate law. Exactly when the veil of limited liability can and will be circumvented to reach into a shareholder’s own assets has befuddled courts, litigants, and scholars alike. And the doctrine has been bedeviled by empirical evidence of a chasm between the theory and practice of veil-piercing; notably, veil-piercing claims inexplicably seem to prevail more often in Contract than Tort, a finding that flouts the engrained distinction between voluntary and involuntary creditors. With a dataset of 2,908 cases from 1658 to 2006, this study presents the most comprehensive portrait of veil-piercing …

An Empirical Study Of The Use Of Mixed Methods In Doctor Of Business Administration (Dba) Curriculum Within An Australian University, Roslyn Cameron, Peter Miller
Peter Miller
Business disciplines have traditionally been undertaken within the quantitative paradigm however, mixed methods approaches have recently been introduced and utilised within applied business research. The purpose of this paper is to map the experience of introducing the teaching of mixed research methods in an international Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) curriculum within an Australian University. This paper begins with a professional reflective piece on the experience of introducing the teaching of mixed methods. This is followed by a brief overview of the literature on mixed methods as a third methodological movement. The paper will then present empirical data into the …
