The Impact Of Mobile Technology On The Viewing Experience Of The Avid Sports Fan, Kimberley Hansen May 2010

The Impact Of Mobile Technology On The Viewing Experience Of The Avid Sports Fan, Kimberley Hansen

Honors Scholar Theses

Viewing sports on television is a very different experience than viewing a game in-person. Sports commentators on television are seemingly able to pull up random statistics as soon as something unexpected happens during a game. Because these statistics are discussed on television, any sports fan who wants to watch a game in-person misses out on the opportunity to hear them during the game. This study identifies what statistics, both common and uncommon, are considered important or interesting by avid sports fans who watch a particular sport at least two times per week. In addition, it considers the rise of mobile …

Gathering Behavioral Samples Through A Computerized And Standardized Assessment Center Exercise Yes, It Is Possible, Filip Lievens, Etienne Van Keer, Ellen Volckaert

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Although computerization and standardization might make assessment center (AC) exercises easier to administer and score, drawbacks are that most of such exercises have a static and multiple-choice format. This study reports on the development and initial validation of a computerized and standardized AC exercise that simulates key managerial tasks. This AC exercise capitalizes not only on the benefits of computerization and standardization (efficiency and cost savings) but at the same time aims to avoid their usual drawbacks (lower response fidelity and interactivity). The composite exercise score was significantly related to several criteria of interest and had incremental validity beyond cognitive …

Importance-Performance Analysis Of Guest Entertainment Technology Amenities In The Lodging Industry, Anil Bilgihan Dr., Cihan Cobanoglu, Brian L. Miller

Hospitality Review

An assessment of how hotel guests view in-room entertainment-technology amenities was conducted to compare the importance of these technologies to how they performed. In-room entertainment technology continues to evolve in the hotel industry. However, given the multitude of entertainment products available in the marketplace today, hoteliers have little understanding of guests’ expectations and of which in-room entertainment-technology amenities will drive guest satisfaction and increase loyalty to the hotel brand. Given that technology is integral to a hotel stay, this study seeks to evaluate the importance and performance of in-room entertainment-technology amenities. Findings indicate that free-to-guest television (FTG TV) and high-speed …

The Politics Of Technological Design And Implementation, Dirk Postma Jan 2010

The Politics Of Technological Design And Implementation, Dirk Postma

Dirk Postma

The paper draws on actor-network theory, as presented by Latour, to argue that technological design and implementation are not mere technical or neutral processes which aim at more efficient means towards predefined ends, but they are processes of an inherently political nature. In these political processes through which collectives are established both humans and technologies participate as actants in the definition of ends, identities and work practices and in the distribution of resources and opportunities. The significant effects of these political processes necessitate a critical reflection on the morality of the process of shaping a collective. The hybrid nature of …

Hybrid Graduate Education: Assessing Student Comfort With Technology Interventions, Martin Sivula

Technology

This pilot study examines a cohort of fourteen, doctoral, graduate students over the last year and one-half of their hybrid (both face-to-face and on-line) program. This study’s purpose was to determine their level of comfort with the new technologies (Web 2.0 software) both before and after intended learning interventions. Several theoretical models concerning technology users’ preferences, attitudes, tasks, Task-Technology Fit (TTF), and student engagement provided frameworks for a conceptual model for the eventual course design, assignments, and learning interventions (Hersey & Blanchard, 1977; Davis, 1986; Davis et al., 1989; Goodhue & Thompson, 1995; Zigurs & Buckland, 1998; Kearsley & Shneiderman, …

Earlier today, I used my credit card to pay for a purchase. As I handed my card to the merchant, he asked if I had used my card to purchase gas recently. When I said yes, he warned me that I should never do it again. He explained that technology experts have developed something that fits inside the credit card reader and copies your credit card information. Another customer overhearing our conversation nodded in agreement. The merchant acknowledged that carrying cash to make gas purchases was much less convenient, but he cautioned me that I should never again use a …

It As A Resource For Competitive Agility: An Analysis Of Firm Performance During Industry Turbulence, Shoshana Altschuller, David S. Gelb, Theresa F. Henry

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

In an increasingly fast-paced business context, agility is crucial to firm performance. Competitive agility, the ability of a firm to rapidly sense and respond to changes in its environment, is especially important during industry turbulence. This research examines whether investment in Information Technology (IT) enhances firms’ competitive agility using analysis of firm performance during industry growth and contraction. The research approach addresses the causality question faced by previous IT productivity studies by focusing on ex-ante IT investment and subsequent firm performance during periods of unanticipated industry shocks. Findings indicate that IT investment enhances competitive agility but only in industries with …

Long Distance Managerial Intervention In Overseas Conflicts: Helping Missionaries Reframe Conflict Along Multiple Dimensions, David R. Dunaetz

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Effective ways of conflict management must be found for missionaries when no trusted mediator in the region is available. Home office management or leaders in other regions can intervene through context rich media, such as the telephone and video conferencing, to provide help. Intervention through context poor media, such as email, is much less likely to succeed. Effective managerial intervention involving interaction with each party can lead to reframing the conflict into an opportunity to cooperate and find mutually beneficial solutions. The manager can present information, ask questions, and help the parties see that resolution is possible by addressing key …

Technological-Personal-Environmental (Tpe) Framework: A Conceptual Model For Technology Acceptance At The Individual Level, Yijun Jiang, Dongyu Chen, Fujun Lai

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

This paper describes the development of the Technological-Personal-Environmental (TPE) framework, which explains individuals’ behaviors of technology acceptance. We argue that existing individual-level technology acceptance theories provide a valuable, but incomplete, understanding of individuals’ technology acceptance. By synthesizing extant technology acceptance models and theories, the proposed TPE delineates the individual-level technology acceptance from technological, personal, and environmental aspects. The proposed framework provides a wider angle to investigate individual-level technology acceptance.

Information Technology Certification Value: An Initial Response From Employers, David Wiershem, Guoying Zhang, Charles R. Johnston

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

This article looks at the value of certification from the employer's perspective. It is perhaps the first study in this area that gathers data directly from employers. A survey of directors of university information technology departments is analyzed, and the results indicate limited support for certifications being valued assets of their employees. While not sufficiently strong enough to warrant generalization of the results to business in general, with this information, students and professionals should be able to better prepare themselves for finding employment and academic programs can better evaluate the appropriateness of the inclusion of certification training in their curricula.

Automated Marketing: A Narrow Focus On Technology Or An Emerging Business Philosophy?, Edward Kasabov Jan 2010

Automated Marketing: A Narrow Focus On Technology Or An Emerging Business Philosophy?, Edward Kasabov

Association of Marketing Theory and Practice Proceedings 2010

As a new area of academic inquiry, Automated Marketing is in its adolescence but has proved to be fast developing and very innovative, mirroring the relatively early stage of the development and application of the technologies that have enabled it. This article widens the understanding of this field of study, which is important both to practice and theory, by drawing attention to two deficiencies: not much has been written on Automated Marketing as such and the little that has been written adopts a narrow technical view while overlooking the significance and impact that it has on marketing, business strategy and …

Association of Marketing Theory and Practice Proceedings 2010

This exploratory research investigates the virtual world industry, explanations for its growth and emerging trends for entrepreneurial ventures and marketing communications. It then explores the effectiveness of operating and promoting higher education in Second Life. Results illustrate consumers 17-24 years old still rely on traditional media for information related to higher education. Developing a business model and marketing mix in Second Life, that often features uncensored content, may not be an appropriate method of connecting with the target demographic. Benefits of utilizing virtual worlds are considered; further research is recommended; suggestions are offered to increase Second Life’s viability in higher …
