John Philoponus' Commentary On Aristotle's Theory Of The World, Christos Kaplanides Jan 1965

John Philoponus' Commentary On Aristotle's Theory Of The World, Christos Kaplanides

Art & Art History ETDs

The contributions of the Greeks to the development and evolution science are enormous. Not only were the Greeks the originators of the basic philosophical and scientific: modes of reflection in the western world, but they were also the continuators as well as the best commentators and critics of their ancestors and their contemporaries. To restrict the contributions of the Greeks to science to the pre-Roman period would be wrong. It would be equally as -wrong to restrict the presense of original thinkers to that period also.

A Study Of Faculty In-Service Education Programs In The Public Schools Of New Mexico, Helen P. Anderson

Art & Art History ETDs

Teacher education should be a continuous process if the teacher is to achieve full realization of his capabilities. Pre-service education is exceedingly important for achieving this, but it cannot provide complete and adequate preparation. It alone cannot produce full realization of the potentialities of the prospective teacher. Upon entrance into the profession, the beginning teacher, regardless of his adequacy of preparation, is faced with a new environment in which he must use new and relatively unfamiliar materials and tools. Rapid changes in educational procedures soon make the pre-service education of both the beginning teacher and the experienced teacher outmoded. The …

A Survey Of Southwestern Indian Stone, Shell, And Bone Sculpture, Diane Lee Aller

Art & Art History ETDs

The interest of the modern artist and craftsman in primitive art has increased yearly since the official discovery of this variety of art in the early years of the twentieth century. To meet the demand for information that this interest has aroused, large numbers of books and articles, many illustrating handsome examples of primitive work, have been compiled. These works, though often valuable and exciting, usually fail to give anything approaching a complete examination of one subject. An art student of a particular subject must turn to the works of the anthropologist, rather than to the works of the art …

It is the purpose of this study (1) to outline briefly the theory of art education as applied to the …

Nationalism: A Search For Unity, The Role Of The Mexican Government In Sponsoring Contemporary Fine Arts, Katharine Ferris Nutt

The writer has endeavored to reveal both the advantageous and disadvantageous aspects of the government's control and to render some idea as to the extent to which cultural nationalism may forge permanent unity among the Mexicans.

The Bent Brothers On The Frontier, Ina Wilson Cason Jun 1939

The Bent Brothers On The Frontier, Ina Wilson Cason

Art & Art History ETDs

Few appreciate the men who blazed the trail into our West. Although a century or more has passed since that era in American history, comparatively little has yet been written upon the subject. While these pioneers were poorly educated in books, that their influence was far reaching is shown by the records of commerce, army annals, and geographic names. So, from crudely scribbled letters, accounts, diaries, documents, witnesses, and reprints, this narrative is written.

Art & Art History ETDs

From Introduction:

This investigation was made for the purpose of determining what has been accomplished in the past in the study of ethnobiology of the southwest Indians. Much of this has been produced as incidental to the archaeology of the region, and some as definite biological problems. Also isolated pieces of work have been done with the different Indian peoples and with varying phases of their ethnobiology. It is therefore proposed to organize and correlate this great mass of ethnobiological literature into a plan which (1 ) includes the entire region and (2) considers the various phases of the culture …

The Acculturation Of Sandia Pueblo, Marjorie Ferguson Jan 1931

The Acculturation Of Sandia Pueblo, Marjorie Ferguson

Art & Art History ETDs

From Introduction:

To study the culture or a people, to become acquainted with the arts, folklore, religion, industries, and traditions, past and present, of what seems to be a slowly dying Indian pueblo -- was the writer's main purpose when she became interest􀀲d in Sandia pueblo, a town or the old, old Tiguex province, so often mentioned in southwestern history and folklore.

One might ask what there could be of interest in that shabby little settlement off the main highway from Albuquerque to Santa Fe. To the unsympathetic outsider such a study as was conducted at Sandia might seem nothing …
