The purpose of this study is to offer for scrutiny certain aspects of the painters, Rouault and Soutine. In the introductory chapter they will be placed in their point in history, period in painting, and artistic line and descent. In the chapters following they will be compared to their personal backgrounds, development as painters, and respective techniques. Finally, they will be evaluated as to their importance to modern painting.

The following discussion is in part the history of nationalism in the fine arts of Mexico, as a spontaneous expression and as one artificially stimulated. Of equal concern, however, are the State's endeavors to channel nationalism by controlling the bellas artes through subsidy, decree, and law, and finally by the creation of a national institute or theater. The writer has endeavored to reveal both the advantageous and disadvantageous aspects of the government's control and to render some idea as to the extent to which cultural nationalism may forge permanent unity among the Mexicans.

The general problem included the art and execution of bronze sculpture. It was felt that the theory of art of bronze sculpture, or any art, could be best comprehended when substantiated by practical illustration. In order to fully realize the problem, a brief history of bronze metal and bronze sculpture was presented in addition to the research in the field of various techniques of bronze casting. The practical illustration of this study was made in the form of a composition for bronze sculpture.
