The University of Maine’s Mathematics Club was organized on February 23, 1916 with the objective of promoting interest in the study of mathematics. The membership consisted of all persons connected with the department of mathematics and astronomy, and of any other persons sufficiently interested in mathematics. In 1965, the University of Maine chapter of the national mathematics honor society, Pi Mu Epsilon, was established.

Finding Aids

Edward "Ted" M. Holmes was born September 27, 1910, in Montclair, N.J. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1933 and moved to Maine in 1939. Ted received master's degrees from the University of Maine at Orono (1954) and Brown University (1956), and earned his doctorate from the latter in 1962. Ted began college teaching in 1954 at Farmington State Teacher's College, now the University of Maine at Farmington. He came to UMaine in 1956, where he taught English (1956-1977) and then honors courses well into his 80s, eventually retiring in 1995.

The original College of Law (also known as School of Law) began its operations in 1898 and was located in Bangor, Maine in a building at Exchange and State streets. The building and records were destroyed during the 1911 Great Fire of Bangor. Following the fire the School relocated to a house at the corner of Second and Union streets in Bangor (now known as the Farrar building.

In September 1975, the Board of Trustees of the University of Maine approved the creation of a School of Performing Arts in the College of Arts and Sciences. The purpose for such a school was to amalgamate the various performing arts units on the Orono campus into one administrative body within the College of Arts and Sciences.

The records mainly contain textual information created by the University of Maine Dean of Women office but there are also photographs of women cleaning the dorms (vacuuming, cooking), dorms, women lounging in living area, women studying in rooms, portraits, and group photographs. The record group includes: Various items regarding the administration of the Intercollegiate Association of Women Students, particularly the organization of the 1968 convention that was held on the University of Maine campus, including information on events, committees, activities, what the convention was, their schedule, rules and regulations and workshops.

Records document the life and death of Wyatt J. Weed, originally of Veazie, Maine. Included are official government papers and awards stemming from his election to the Maine State Legislature and his membership in the Militia of Maine's band. Weed's family was involved in logging and this collection contains records directly related to the business, including memorandums and financial records, as well as original land deeds.

The University of Maine Faculty and Professional Association was founded in 1971 and dissolved on November 13, 1979. The Association's purpose was to represent the needs and interests of all professional staff at the University of Maine, specifically insuring adequate and equitable compensation for its members, maintaining proper academic freedom and personal rights, keeping the membership informed of impending administrative and legislative acts of concern, and presenting the faculty's views and desires to both administrations and legislatures.

The society, "All Maine Women", was founded at the University of Maine in April, 1925. It is the highest honorary but non-scholastic society for women. Members are chosen from the three upper classes on the basis of exemplary character, excellence in service to the University and community, Maine spirit, honor, dignity, willingness to accept responsibility, responsible leadership, and potential for continued contributions to the University. Also a portrait collection arranged by name, mostly of faculty and staff. An extensive collection it seems that most photos Arntzen took were archived here.

The bulk of the collection includes case files pertaining to Moore's legal practice in Statesboro, Bulloch County, Georgia, and as Solicitor General of the Middle Circuit Court of Georgia. The collection also contains clippings, printed material, and expense reports relating to Moore's campaigns for Solicitor-General (1912, 1916) and Congressman for Georgia's 1st District (1920-1924).
