Speech courses have been taught at the University of Maine since 1868 under Merritt Caldwell Fernald. The Department of Speech offered programs in public speaking, theater, play production, and stage direction culminating in stage productions held at the University of Maine that would provide students with the experience of putting on a production. The Department was also instrumental in establishing and overseeing radio and television stations at the University of Maine. The Department sponsored high school debating tournaments and theater workshops and competitions at the University of Maine.

The College of Agriculture was established at the University of Maine in 1868 and went on to provide courses on animal husbandry, farm management, forestry, dietetics, household management, handwork, childcare and child welfare, home economics education, history and economics of agriculture, food processing, and horticulture. Today, many of the responsibilities of the former College are carried out by the College of Natural Sciences, Forestry, and Agriculture and Cooperative Extension Service, which is now a separate department.

The University of Maine first established an active development fund in 1959. Its efforts were directed by the University of Maine Development Council (which later became the President's Development Council). Funds raised by the Development Office were used for a range of activities including: library facilities, student financial aid, scholarships, graduate fellowships, chair and professorships, construction projects, and teaching equipment.

Effective July 1, 2016, the University of Maine Development Office closed with funding raising operations unified with a partnership with the University of Maine Foundation.

Established in 1972 as an advisory council to the President of the University of Maine at Orono, the purpose of the Professional Employees Advisory Council (PEAC) is to encourage, facilitate and contribute to collegiality among the professional staff and administration of UMO. Originally PEAC concerned itself with a variety of issues such as fringe benefits, job security, guidelines, and grievance procedures.

The building was named Murray Hall in honor of former professor of zoology and Dean of College of Arts and Sciences Joseph M. Murray (1937-1941). The University of Maine General Student Senate (GSS) is the fiduciary body of Student Government. It consists of no more than 35 Student Senators who serve as direct representatives of students in their respective colleges. The Vice President of Student Government is the President of the GSS. The GSS has final authority on all Student Government monetary issues, student organization matters and student administrative committee appointments. The Dean of Men reported to the Director of Student Services (and Registrar) and was later part of the Student Affairs Office. The dean was responsible for student housing and discipline and oversaw the many male student groups on campus including fraternities. There was also a Dean of Women who had similar responsibilities for female students. Part of the role of Dean of Men was to also chair the University of Maine Health Service and Athletic Board. Edward "Ted" M. Holmes was born September 27, 1910, in Montclair, N.J. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1933 and moved to Maine in 1939. Ted received master's degrees from the University of Maine at Orono (1954) and Brown University (1956), and earned his doctorate from the latter in 1962. Ted began college teaching in 1954 at Farmington State Teacher's College, now the University of Maine at Farmington. He came to UMaine in 1956, where he taught English (1956-1977) and then honors courses well into his 80s, eventually retiring in 1995.

The original College of Law (also known as School of Law) began its operations in 1898 and was located in Bangor, Maine in a building at Exchange and State streets. The building and records were destroyed during the 1911 Great Fire of Bangor. Following the fire the School relocated to a house at the corner of Second and Union streets in Bangor (now known as the Farrar building.

Records document the life and death of Wyatt J. Weed, originally of Veazie, Maine. Included are official government papers and awards stemming from his election to the Maine State Legislature and his membership in the Militia of Maine's band.
