Ministry Among Those Who Live With Disabilities: Disability As An Issue Of Faith And Hope, Joan Cornelison

Art Imitates Life: Violence And The Music Of Metal And Rap, Gordon A. Crews, Angela D. Crews
Criminal Justice Faculty Research
The purpose of this presentation is to explore the similar evolution's of Black Metal and Gangsta Rap musical genres. The authors argue the following similarities exist: 1) different cultures and statements being made, but violence is a common thread (outcomes of violence and societal responses), 2) the music and lyrics in both reflect their cultures, histories, and lives, and, 3) there is a strong musical and lyrical expression of violence related to the behavioral expression of violence among the artists and the fans in both genres. Finally, the authors question whether art imitates life or life imitates art.
Revisiting The Ethics Of Hiv Prevention Research In Developing Countries, Charles Weijer, Guy Leblanc
Revisiting The Ethics Of Hiv Prevention Research In Developing Countries, Charles Weijer, Guy Leblanc
Philosophy Presentations
Issues: We present key aspects of our paper, commissioned by UNAIDS in 2005, entitled, “Revisiting the ethics of HIV prevention research in developing countries.” In 2004 and 2005 we witnessed the closure or suspension of three international clinical trials testing tenofovir in the prevention of HIV infection in high risk groups due to the failure to provide free treatment to those who seroconvert during the conduct of the study. We examine critically moral claims for the provision of treatment to those who seroconvert in HIV prevention trials and ask whether it is a matter of moral obligation or moral negotiation? …
Mean Girls: A Feminist Re-Reading Of The Rivalry Theme In High Victorian Paintings, Jennifer Mayer
Mean Girls: A Feminist Re-Reading Of The Rivalry Theme In High Victorian Paintings, Jennifer Mayer
Jennifer Mayer
The portrayal of romantic rivalries represents an engaging topic, especially when put in the context of Victorian England. This presentation analyzes the significance of women as rivals as depicted in select painted images of the High Victorian era (1851-1867). I discuss the possible backlash component of the paintings to women's rights advances of the time, and analyze the paintings in terms of possible sites of female empowerment and resistance.

Understanding And Using Advanced Statistics, Jeremy Foster, Emma Barkus, Christian Yavorsky
Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences - Papers (Archive)
The spread of sophisticated computer packages and the machinery on which to run them has meant that procedures which were previously only available to experienced researchers with access to expensive machines and research students can now be carried out in a few seconds by almost every undergraduate. Understanding and Using Advanced Statistics provides the basis for gaining an understanding of what these analytic procedures do, when they should be used, and what the results provided signify. This comprehensive textbook guides students and researchers through the transition from simple statistics to more complex procedures with accessible language and illustration.

The Question Of The Meaning Of Religion: As Belonging-To Being-Human, Angus Brook
The Question Of The Meaning Of Religion: As Belonging-To Being-Human, Angus Brook
Theology Conference Papers
If the ‘studies in religion’ are to be reinvented, we should ask: what foundation for this reinvention? or What foundation is appropriate for this particular historical horizon? This paper will take one stance towards this issue of foundation – in relation to the question of the meaning of Religion as a notion.
I take this theme of reinvention to be an opportunity to pose the question of the meaning of Religion as foundational in three ways: as the foundational concept of the study of religion, as the question of the methodological foundation of studies in religion, and finally, the question …

This presentation, which was part of a session titled "Improving Access to E-Journals," describes a local solution to tracking the library's print and electronic journal holdings. This solution, called The Periodical Cat, served our campus community well until we were able to invest in a commercial knowledgebase. The Periodical Cat used a Microsoft Access database to produce an alphabetical, integrated list of journals in all formats, available on the library's website.
