Under The Wig: A Critique On The Usage Of Boy Actors In The Renaissance, Christopher Nastasi
Under The Wig: A Critique On The Usage Of Boy Actors In The Renaissance, Christopher Nastasi
Symposium of Student Scholars
This paper examines the treatment of boy actors in the Renaissance between the years 1300-1600. With very little primary source material due to the low literacy rate in the Renaissance era, analyzing court records is the primary way of understanding how theatre companies and society harmfully treated the boy actors. One of the many issues the boy actors faced, was their perception from the audience. This study analyzes through a materialistic lens, how the audience treated the boy actors. By using this Marxist approach, focusing on the role of labor, the study dives deeper into the direct physical abuses the …

CW: Presentation includes references to sex and suicide.
This presentation is an in-depth score analysis of “Changing My Major” from the musical Fun Home by Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori, which is based on Alison Bechdel’s autobiographical memoir by the same name. The musical examines the similarities and differences between Alison and her father as she attempts to contruct a future without a queer elder to model it. This presentation demonstrates the collaborative, tight structure of thematic messaging in musical theatre. Overall, ““Changing My Major” personifies the show at large and celebrates the process of questioning as its own epic, …

Understanding Humanity: Demarginalizing The Intersection Of Black Masculinity And Feminity For The Psyche, Kandice Fowlkes
Symposium of Student Scholars
As the intersection of race and gender is a feat for the strong Black man and strong Black woman, the double edged sword is the deterioration of mental health overlooked by the need to maintain the guise of perfection. The social disadvantages of this intersection include a myriad of traumas such as financial stability, violence and oppression, and the internal stigma of judgment, which causes Black men and Women to delay or go undiagnosed for mental health disorders. In turn, this enables an unstable community to unite for mental health reform. Aside from seeking medical help, the conversation of mental …
The Hero's Journey Beyond The Physical, Jasmine Jones
The Hero's Journey Beyond The Physical, Jasmine Jones
Symposium of Student Scholars
How would one go about integrating a theme of acceptance of self and others into an adventure, comedy, fantasy, and family friendly film? In the film Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, the invisible hand of the screenwriters does just that. The importance of this story is in the story structure. The four main characters are used to exemplify how there is an important relationship between plot and structure. Through this, character transformation takes place both physically and emotionally. The characters are presented as four normal people who were sucked into a game and sent on a quest to solve mysteries …

The Material Wealth Of Slaves In The South, India Daniel
Symposium of Student Scholars
Since its beginning, enslavement of African peoples in the New World has been a topic of great interest. There are many different routes to go, in terms of researching that era and what went along with it. However, because of its extent and variation in different places, there is a great amount of information and stories that have gone untold. This research will help to unpack some of those stories, particularly as it relates to the slaves of the Conner-Field house in Cartersville, Georgia, whose possessions were not typical “slave possessions”. Their possessions help to shed a light on their …

The human body can be an exceptional vessel to interpret and express historical ideas through the art of dance. Rosalind Franklin is the scientist who captured the famous Photograph 51- the first photo taken that revealed DNA’s three-dimensional structure - and made groundbreaking discoveries in the area of molecular biology. This piece will be a study of her life as she fought anti-Semitism during World War II, sexism in her field of study, and ovarian cancer that eventually led to her untimely passing; as well as a celebration of her discoveries on DNA, disease control, and her love for travel. …

Within the context of the production of contemporary art, interest has increasingly focused on global art. New cultural and artistic exchanges have influenced and enabled artists of diverse backgrounds to gain recognition with international art exhibitions being the forum in which to encounter and interpret new artistic representations. The 55th Venice Biennale held in 2013 hosted over 88 national pavilions, exhibiting works by over 150 artists. It was here that I encountered the work of Egyptian artist Mohamed Banawy and his large scale multimedia mosaic ‘The Valley’. Through visual analysis and a dialog with the artist I examine Banawy’s exploration …
