A Hazard Assessment And Proposed Risk Index For Art, Architecture, Archive And Artifact Protection: Case Studies For Assorted International Museums, Clara Jeanene Kirk
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study proposes a hazard/risk index for environmental, technological, and social hazards that may threaten a museum or other place of cultural storage and accession. This index can be utilized and implemented to measure the risk at the locations of these storage facilities in relationship to their geologic, geographic, environmental, and social settings. A model case study of the 1966 flood of the Arno River and its impact on the city of Florence and the Uffizi Gallery was used as the index focus. From this focus an additional eleven museums and their related risk were assessed. Each index addressed a …
Geometry Of Faith: A Stereotomic Reconstruction Of Sainte-Anne-La-Royale In Paris, Giuseppe Mazzone
Geometry Of Faith: A Stereotomic Reconstruction Of Sainte-Anne-La-Royale In Paris, Giuseppe Mazzone
Theses and Dissertations
Planned during the XVIIth century by the Italian architect Guarino Guarini, the church of Sainte-Anne-la-Royale was supposed to be built in Paris to honor the French Queen Anne of Austria. In an unfortunate twist of fate the church was only partially realized and later destroyed. Present history's only memory comes in three engravings by Guarino Guarini himself: a plan, a transversal section, and the main elevation.
An example of Italian Baroque Architecture, the building shines for its intriguing plan and complex system of vaults. Its execution was supposed to be realized according to the refined techniques of French stereotomy. Faithful …
Subdivided Windows With Mixed Shading Devices: A Daylighting Solution For Effective Integration Of Occupants Into The Building Environmental Control, Leyla Sanati
Theses and Dissertations
Daylighting is one of the most challenging aspects of an ecological building design. The dynamic nature of daylight along with a wide range of individual preferences makes it a complex design issue. The art of daylighting relies on fine-tuning a delicate balance between admitting sufficient daylight for occupant well being and task performance and preventing glare and over heating. These goals are rarely achieved in buildings where fenestration design is reduced to an opening with an interior blind due to occupants' infrequent shade operation. To address this problem, a number of automatic shading devices have been developed to be integrated …

Developing Seamless Connections In The Urban Transit Network: A Look Toward High-Speed Rail Interconnectivity, Tingting Yu
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In the past, the studies in the U.S. on high speed rail have been on economic impact. Recently, there are a few studies on the multimodal connectivity at high speed rail stations. High speed rail stations are viewed as hubs that are connected by different modes of public transportation by which passengers are transported to their destinations. How and in which way these different modes are connected to high speed rail stations influence the ridership of high speed rail stations. As the development of high speed rail system in the U.S. has come to the stage for actual design and …

Methane Production By A Packed-Bed Anaerobic Digester Fed Dairy Barn Flush Water, Sean Richard Thomson
Methane Production By A Packed-Bed Anaerobic Digester Fed Dairy Barn Flush Water, Sean Richard Thomson
Master's Theses
Packed-bed digesters are an alternative to covered lagoon digesters for methane production and anaerobic treatment of dilute wastewaters such as dairy barn flush water. The physical media of packed-beds retain biofilms, often allowing increased treatment rates. Previous studies have evaluated several types of media for digestion of dilute wastewaters, but cost and media fouling have setback commercial development. A major operational cost has been effluent recirculation pumping.
In the present effort, a novel approach to anaerobic digestion of flush dairy water was developed at pilot-scale: broken walnut shells were used as a low-cost packed-bed medium and effluent recirculation was replaced …

Mind, Body And Soul: Performance Landscapes For A Healthy Community, Angelike G. Angelopoulos
Masters Theses
According to the World Health Organization, there have been increases in the adverse physical, mental and social conditions amongst urban populations in recent years. These issues have been attributed to impediments to healthy lifestyles, a lack of physical activity and poor food choices (WHO 29). This can lead to obesity, increasing risk of diabetes, heart disease and other health related problems. Sedentary lifestyles are worsened by modern technologies such as cell phones, computers, and video games.
Urban landscapes have evolved over time to suit the needs of various, and sometimes-competing priorities of growing cities. As a result, the health of …
The Relationship Between Bicycles And Traffic Safety For All Road Users, Jasmine A. Martin
The Relationship Between Bicycles And Traffic Safety For All Road Users, Jasmine A. Martin
Master's Theses
Over the past twenty years bicycle use as a mode of transportation has grown considerably in the United States. Other studies have examined the individual bicyclist’s risk in proportion to the growth in cycling across cities, a phenomenon referred to as ‘safety in numbers.’ This study expands from that research and examines the effect of cyclists on road safety for all road users.
The study examines the roles of bicycle modal split, a city wide analysis, and bicycle infrastructure, a site based analysis, in road safety outcomes. For the city based analysis, twenty years of crash data in 12 California …

An Urban Continuing Care Retirement Community Of The Twenty First Century, Michael W. Isaac
Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses
Maximizing the land-use potential in crowded urban areas by the creation of mixed-use developments built in a high-rise format is more important than ever. In urban environments with high building density the little land that does become available for development must be utilized in a manner not only efficient, but to meet the needs of the community it is constructed within. As the baby boomer generation enters retirement, the senior housing market will experience growth to accommodate the need. Developing senior housing that will provide desirable attributes expected by this generation is necessary. In the urban environment the development of …

Determining Thresholds Of Annoyance To Tones In Noise, Jennifer Marie Francis
Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Dissertations, Thesis, and Student Research
Building services equipment often produce noise with prominent tones that can lead to complaints from occupants in the built environment. Previous studies have investigated human perception to tones in noise but it is still unclear at what threshold of prominence these tones lead to human annoyance. The goal of this research is to apply two different methods towards defining thresholds of annoyance to two tonal frequencies: 125 Hz and 500 Hz. In Method I – Direct Assessment with Task, subjects are exposed to 10 minutes of broadband noise with a tonal frequency set at a certain level of prominence while …
Designing Acoustics For Linguistically Diverse Classrooms: Effects Of Background Noise, Reverberation And Talker Foreign Accent On Speech Comprehension By Native And Non-Native English-Speaking Listeners, Z. Ellen Peng
Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Dissertations, Thesis, and Student Research
The current classroom acoustics standard (ANSI S12.60-2010) recommends core learning spaces not to exceed background noise level (BNL) of 35 dBA and reverberation time (RT) of 0.6 second, based on speech intelligibility performance mainly by the native English-speaking population. Existing literature has not correlated these recommended values well with student learning outcomes. With a growing population of non-native English speakers in American classrooms, the special needs for perceiving degraded speech among non-native listeners, either due to realistic room acoustics or talker foreign accent, have not been addressed in the current standard. This research seeks to investigate the effects of BNL …

The Beach Precinct: Professional Perspectives Of Their Role And Function, Nigel Cartlidge, Lynne Armitage
Lynne Armitage
As Carr et al (1992, pp. 92) observe ‘places that do not meet people’s needs or serve any important functions for people will be underused and unsuccessful’. This observation conversely implies that places can be judged by the intensity and diversity of observed activities, provision of facilities, access to amenities and the extent to which these traits met people’s needs can be used as a measure of the ‘success’of the place. With a view to informing this observation by empirical enquiry, this paper reports on a Delphi inquiry of the opinions of professionals involved in the property field. The inquiry …

The Women’s School of Planning and Architecture (WSPA) was an ambitious, explicitly feminist educational program created by seven women planners and architects who used the school to introduce ideas and practices of the 1970s women’s movement into design and planning education in the United States. Between 1974 and 1981, WSPA organized five intensive, short-term residential educational sessions and a conference, each in a different geographical location in the United States, after which the organization ceased formal programming and the organizers moved on to other activities. The founders and participants involved in WSPA collectively imagined and created a feminist space for …
The City’S Unnoticed Limits: Considerations About The Boundaries In Caracas, Fabio Capra-Ribeiro
The City’S Unnoticed Limits: Considerations About The Boundaries In Caracas, Fabio Capra-Ribeiro
Faculty Publications
In Caracas, insecurity has prompted an individual but generalized quest for isolation that is translated into an accelerated growth of boundaries as walls and fences. This situation has led to a significant deterioration of the spaces around them, setback space on one side and the street on the other, confined and divided, urban fabric if getting fragmented. The research wants then to illustrate this complex problem from a qualitative methodology and the hermeneutic circle, from which dialogical relationships are established between the elements analyzed. The main contributions of the research highlights the explanation of a reality that is happening nowadays …
