Urbicidio O La Producción Del Olvido, Fernando Carrión Mena Arq. Dec 2014

How Is Mobile Technology Changing City Planning? Developing A Taxonomy For The Future, William W. Riggs, Kayla Gordon, Chris Steins Oct 2014

How Is Mobile Technology Changing City Planning? Developing A Taxonomy For The Future, William W. Riggs, Kayla Gordon, Chris Steins

William W. Riggs

The emergence of web technology has created tremendous opportunities for improving the role of good government, specifically in the form of increased information, interaction with the public, and more cost effective and efficient means of conducting public business transactions. These opportunities have been broadened with the introduction of internet-enabled mobile devices, as location-based information is used to increase awareness of user activity, movements and behaviors in real-time conditions and specific contexts (Kwak, Lee, Park & Moon, 2010). Some argue that the transition to mobile changes the nature of work and can allow individuals to work outside the office and create knowledge creation that is geographically referenced (Zurita, 2012). Based on a survey of public sector planning officials, this study confirms other work that suggests high levels of smartphone use for work purposes (Evans-Cowley & Kubinski, 2013), there are still locations where local planners do not have desktop computer access and there is little reliance on web technologies. That said, despite high levels of mobile use, activities conducted via mobile continue to be less transactive than the literature suggests, leaving room for future growth as mobile phones and tablets increase in prevalence. While some have argued that e-government tools have two major roles, 1) information sharing and 2) receptive exchanges (Evans-Cowley, 2010; Evans-Cowley & Kitchen, 2011). We argue that there is a third role for planning and e-government technology – the interactive or transactive. Given this framework, this research establishes ...

Reconnecting Mill Communities: An Architectural Intervention In Fitchburg, Massachusetts, Ronald Bujold Sep 2014

Reconnecting Mill Communities: An Architectural Intervention In Fitchburg, Massachusetts, Ronald Bujold

Ronald Bujold

For nearly a century, once prosperous mill communities throughout New England have struggled to adapt to ever-changing societal, cultural, and economic conditions. This project explores an architectural intervention for Fitchburg’s Rollstone Hill neighborhood, which seeks to reverse this trend by deploying a design strategy that begins with re-purposing a 60,000 square foot mill. This strategy focuses on utilizing the fundamental and existing components of these planned communities—people, infrastructure, and economics—to cultivate the design and the relationships necessary to reconnect this neighborhood to the modern world.

Sismos, Fernando Carrión Mena Arq. Aug 2014

¿Silenciar Al Metro De Quito?, Fernando Carrión Mena Arq.

Greta Place As A Historic District, William Riggs

William W. Riggs

This report, forwarded to the City of San Luis Obispo's Cultural Heritage Commission proposes Greta Place as a mid-century modern historic district. Greta is a small street located centrally in San Luis Obispo, CA (See Figure 1). It has a unique and distinct mid-century presence that is both a well-preserved and concentrated example of a collection of Mid-century single-family homes produced in San Luis Obispo as the City began to expand in the 1950s. It specifically called out in the City’s Historic Context Statement when it describes the street as “a cohesive collection of one-story Mid-century Modern houses ...

No Admixture, Sustainable, Self-Consolidating Grout, Craig V. Baltimore Dr Jul 2014

No Admixture, Sustainable, Self-Consolidating Grout, Craig V. Baltimore Dr

Craig V. Baltimore

ABSTRACT: The consolidation of grout in concrete masonry unit (CMU) walls is labor-intensive. Also, the grout’s Portland cement content has a high embodied energy demand – a non-sustainable characteristic. For the labor-intensive issue, chemical admixture self-consolidating grouts have been used in walls 12.67 ft. (3.86 m) tall, however the chemical additive can impose new limitations on the grout (non-robust characteristics). No admixture self-consolidating grout with high percentage Portland cement replacement have potential for robust and sustainable application.

This paper reports on the consolidation of no admixture self-consolidating grout made by substituting high percentages of Portland cement with Type-F ...

Not-I/Thou: The Other Subject Of Art And Architecture, Gavin W. Keeney May 2014

Not-I/Thou: The Other Subject Of Art And Architecture, Gavin W. Keeney

Gavin W Keeney

Not-I/Thou: The Other Subject of Art and Architecture is a series of essays delineating the gray areas and black zones in present-day cultural production with, in Part One (The Gray and the Black), an implicit critique of neoliberal capitalism and its assault on the humanities through the pseudo-scientific and pseudo-empirical biases of academic and professional disciplines. Initially surveying the shift from Cultural Ecology to Cultural Studies to Cognitive Capitalism, the essays of Part Two (What is “Franciscan” Ontology?) return to certain lost causes in the historical development of modernity and post-modernity, foremost the recourse to artistic production as both ...

Mount Tom Self-Transformation Retreat: Designing Experiential Architecture To Provoke Stimulatory, Expressive And Sensory Self-Exploration, Kyle B. Young

Kyle B Young

The environment evolved five human senses; through these receptors the majority of us experience life. Or do we? The a vast majority of our daily landscape resides enclosed, shut off from the exterior; separating people from the elements, organizing and distributing the multitude of functions that affect how we live and feel. The mental state of society is poor, the “daily dis-ease” of we wrestle with; stress, emotions, fatigue, exhaustion, disconnection suck the life out of the moments we live to barely even see. These interactions and experiences we encounter in, on, under and around the architectural forms we travel ...

Mesure Du Coefficient D’Absorption De Matériaux Poreux Sous Champ Acoustique Diffus Synthétique, Olivier Robin, Alain Berry, Olivier Doutres Ph.D., Noureddine Atalla

Olivier Doutres Ph.D.

El Regreso A La Ciudad Construida, Fernando Carrión Mena Arq. Mar 2014

Calpoly Must To Do More To Put Brakes On Vehicle Traffic, William W. Riggs

William W. Riggs

There are countless examples of university communities in the United States and internationally that have implemented similar policies. While the city of San Luis Obispo is taking aggressive steps to move in that direction as a part of updates to the Land Use and Circulation Elements, these efforts are not being matched by the campus — and this is at a time where the increase in student population necessitates it.

Living In The Past: Preservation, Interpretation, And Engagement, And The 19th – Early 20th Century Home, Kirsten Jarrett

Kirsten Jarrett

In recent years, boundaries between curated domestic space (typically open to the public, maintained by museum professionals, and supported by government or charitable funding), and privately occupied dwellings, have on occasion been eroded. Each year, usually as part of annual heritage events run by non-profit organisations, a small number of residents permit members of the public to view features of historic interest within their homes. Furthermore, extensive opportunities to share information, images, and data on-line allow residents to ‘virtually’ display historical features within otherwise closed domestic spaces. Adopting approaches from ‘Rescue’, Research, and Public Archaeology, the Living in the Past ...

La Ciudad Y Su Gobierno En América Latina, Fernando Carrión Mena Arq. Jan 2014

Quantifying The Effect Of Passive Solar Design In Traditional New England Architecture, Peter M. Levy Jan 2014

Quantifying The Effect Of Passive Solar Design In Traditional New England Architecture, Peter M. Levy

plevy@eco.umass.edu

Passive solar design can be an effective means of reducing conditioning loads in residential buildings by utilizing free solar heat during the heating season, and blocking unwanted solar heat during the cooling season. The objective of this thesis was to use energy modeling software to simulate the effect that incorporating passive solar design strategies into typical New England style houses would have on their energy usage for heating and cooling. The designs that were studied were Capes, Colonials, and Saltboxes. Four versions of increasing energy efficiency were studied for each style. After measuring baseline energy usage for each model, four ...
