Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to present the critical success factors (CSFs) for engaging in the building maintenance business in Hong Kong where maintenance is a major market sector. Design/methodology/approach - In this study, CSFs are identified for the business of building maintenance based on data collected from a questionnaire survey and interviews. Findings - A total of 12 CSFs are identified, such as client's satisfaction, certification of company, reliability of service, quality of service, and company reputation, and most are related to two principal factors, namely maintenance service and organization, and project management. Purpose - The measurement of construction performance is a vexed problem. Despite much research effort, there remains little agreement over what to measure and how to measure it. The problem is made even more complicated by the desire to benchmark national industry performance against that of other countries. As clearly construction cost forms part of the analysis, the mere adjustment of cost data to an "international currency" has undermined past attempts to draw any meaningful conclusions. Culverts under roadways can provide safe crossings for many animal species and are readily available, numbering over 12 million in the United States. In this pre and post construction study, I added a simple wooden ledge to 7 culverts in Saratoga County, New York to investigate their effect on wildlife crossings. A motion sensor camera was used to monitor each culvert for 2 consecutive summers, 2012 summer without a ledge and 2013 with a ledge. Six species of small mammals accounted for the 55 culvert crossings in 2012 and 58 crossings in 2013. The ledges did not increase culvert crossings …

Measuring construction industry productivity at any level above that of site activities such as bricklaying or plastering remains a vexed question. A variety of methods have been developed and tested but results are often far from consistent with different methods that appear equally valid in theory producing quite different results. While psychologists remain divided whether ‘workplace stress’ is caused by workplace experiences or other factors, it’s commonly accepted that, regardless of cause, people experiencing stress can demonstrate decreased workplace performance. From a human performance and productivity perspective, from whence stress arises is somewhat irrelevant–the relevant fact is that it’s far more important to have systems and procedures in place to contribute to avoidance of undue work environment caused stress.
