Developing A New Urban Quarter At Grangegorman, Dublin: The Role Of Planning In Its Successful Delivery, Terry Prendergast

Articles

This paper discussed the role of urban planning in achieving successful urban regeneration. It focuses on a specific regeneration project in Dublin’s inner city, the Grangegorman development, which relocates, on a phased basis, the Technological University Dublin’s c.40 buildings on dispersed sites within Dublin City to a single 29 hectare site. The development also provides health facilities for the Health Service Executive, in addition to community and recreational uses and commercial development. Urban planning has played a critical role in the delivery of the project and in securing Government support and funding. This paper describes the importance of project vision, …

Designing And Constructing For A Sustainable Future: Community Urban Housing In Timber: Projects By 4th. Year Architecture Students At Dit, Jim Roche Sep 2014

Designing And Constructing For A Sustainable Future: Community Urban Housing In Timber: Projects By 4th. Year Architecture Students At Dit, Jim Roche

Conference papers

There is some agreement and much debate among interested parties about what constitutes ‘sustainable housing’. The term ‘sustainable’ is used somewhat liberally to mean different things to different listeners. Governments, institutions, interest groups and individual designers often address certain aspects while ignoring the bigger picture. But the bigger picture is such a multivalent issue that includes aspects outside the architect’s immediate remit such as location, transport, security, procurement policy and post-occupancy analysis and management. Or are these outside the architect’s remit?

Teaching sustainable housing within conventional architecture programmes means educators are restricted to identifying certain key issues that students should …

Historic Former Asylum In A Perilous State, Sylvia Thompson

Media

It is in a perilous state of dereliction with only the southern end of the building remaining standing. The linking arcades on the wings of the building are long gone. The roof has collapsed inwards. The windows have all been broken and are either boarded up or covered with gratings. It is surrounded by overgrown vegetation and in some places, there are trees rooted into the walls.

Behaviour-Based Wood Connection As A Base For New Tectonics, Marcin Wójcik, Jan Strumiłło Sep 2014

Behaviour-Based Wood Connection As A Base For New Tectonics, Marcin Wójcik, Jan Strumiłło

Conference papers

This paper joins into the debate on sustainable architecture and construction and the resilience of the architectural practice. It takes up the case of solid wood construction. Heterogeneity of timber is considered a disadvantage in construction. Wood industry utilises expensive processes in order to overcome rather than exploit natural wood properties. We suggest a different approach that could lead to the reduction of environmental pollution and more economic use of resources that is discussed with a proposed wood connection method based on harnessing material behaviour induced by a change of moisture relationships -- i.e. shrinkage. Two design paths are presented: …

Transport Inequity & Disadvantage In Celtic Tiger Dublin – Preliminary Results, Sarah Rock, Aoife Ahern Sep 2014

Transport Inequity & Disadvantage In Celtic Tiger Dublin – Preliminary Results, Sarah Rock, Aoife Ahern

Conference Papers

This paper explores social equity issues in transport and land-use planning, using recently developed housing areas in Dublin as a case study. As a pillar of sustainable development, social equity is an important objective of transport planning. During the 2000s, Dublin experienced a significant increase in car ownership levels and usage. There is now a growing body of research that links increasing car ownership, usage and dependency to increasing levels of inequity and transport disadvantage. The paper briefly outlines the evolving theoretical considerations of relevance to transport and land-use related equity, and establishes a framework from which to draw a …

Using Children's Maps To Locate Areas Of Perceived Danger On Children's Routes To School, Frank Bondzio

Masters

Dublin faces many of the modern day transport problems associated with automobile transport. The bicycle is increasingly being viewed by Urban Planners as an interesting form of individual transportation which can form part of an integrated transportation solution to this problem. For cycling to be a sustainable mode of transport it must be all inclusive. However, there are some identifiable barriers which prevent certain groups in society from cycling. Barriers to children cycling are directly linked to safety concerns and strategies to encourage cycling to school in Ireland currently focus on promotion and cycle training with road safety engineering measures …

Contractors’ Claims For Loss And Expense Under The Principle ‘Traditional’ Forms Of Irish Building Contract, Tony Cunningham Mar 2014

Contractors’ Claims For Loss And Expense Under The Principle ‘Traditional’ Forms Of Irish Building Contract, Tony Cunningham

Other Resources

Contractor’s claims for loss and expense have long been a contentious issue on many building contracts. Claims are usually resolved during the final accounting process, but where negotiations fail, they frequently become disputes, with the parties adopting a legal route to resolve their differences. This review examines the topic of contractors’ claims in the context of ‘traditionally’ procured building contracts in theRepublicofIrelandand focuses on the RIAI ‘Yellow’ and the GCCC Public Works PW-CF1 Contracts. The study examines the grounds on which a claim for compensation may be made under these two contracts and describes the administrative procedures to be observed. …

An Introduction To Taking Off Building Quantities:An Irish Approach, Tony Cunningham Feb 2014

An Introduction To Taking Off Building Quantities:An Irish Approach, Tony Cunningham

Other Resources

The purpose of measuring building work is to establish the correct amount of work to be executed. Calculating well presented accurate quantities in a clear manner while adopting a logical approach will help to reduce errors and will save time if the measurements need to be referred to at a later date. This paper describes and demonstrates an approach to hand-written taking off procedure informed by the techniques adopted by Irish consulting quantity surveying practices. The paper also discusses the ‘direct billing’ system used inIrelandand contrasts this with the procedures demonstrated in various UK textbooks, identifying key differences between the …

Architecture, Education And Experience, Sarah Sheridan Jan 2014

Architecture, Education And Experience, Sarah Sheridan

Conference papers

In the early twentieth century, informed by an educational theory that meaningful experience is deeply embedded in sensory learning, open air school reformers set about creating deep learning experiences for children. They suggested that children should be exposed to nature, in order to contribute to their health, well-being and learning processes. Bad air remained a pervasive indicator of poor health, and to support the healthy benefits of fresh air, reformers openly called on parents and teachers to become ‘open-air crusaders.’ The public pressure to give children access to fresh air was on. The debate that ensued focused on the specification …

The Identification Of Key Economic And Property Variables That Impact On Prime Office Rents: A Study Of Seven European Cities, Aoife Reilly

Other Resources

The aim of this dissertation is to identify and assess the impact of macroeconomic and property variables on prime office rental levels. Data from seven diverse European cities was gathered from 2000 to 2014 and statistical analysis using econometric modelling was undertaken. The results unveil a number of relationships between the explanatory variables and prime office rents. In particular, the results highlight movements in the office vacancy rate and GDP as important variables impacting change in prime office rental levels while employment, interest rates and inflation play a less significant role. Results indicate that econometric modelling has a role to …

It takes departure from the Erwin Hauer’s ‘Continua’series, and proposes how it could be developed with the contemporary digital tools and by following the biological paradigm. The objective is to develop a new system that minimises wastage as well as to test how the resulting structure performance.

Backtoback: A Bio-Cybernetic Approach To Production Of Solid Timber Components, Marcin Wójcik, Jan Strumiłło Jan 2014

Backtoback: A Bio-Cybernetic Approach To Production Of Solid Timber Components, Marcin Wójcik, Jan Strumiłło

Conference papers

This paper investigates the potential and implications of using naturally occurring material phenomena as a connecting mechanism for solid timber components. Proposed and discussed are connections based on anisotropic shrinkage and geometrical variability of trees. Using the notion of material agency in design, following the bio-cyberntic and biomimetic frameworks, solutions are devised to reduce energy usage, environmental pollution and utilise low-processed material. Finally, consequences of the fusion of the natural (analogue) and the digital realms are discussed, with an example of a workflow integrating inherent material traits with digital manufacture.
