Urban systems involve a multitude of closely intertwined components, which are more measurable than before due to new sensors, data collection, and spatio-temporal analysis methods. Turning these data into knowledge to facilitate planning efforts in addressing current challenges of urban complex systems requires advanced interdisciplinary analysis methods, such as urban informatics or urban data science. Yet, by applying a purely data-driven approach, it is too easy to get lost in the ‘forest’ of data, and to miss the ‘trees’ of successful, livable cities that are the ultimate aim of urban planning. This paper assesses how geospatial data, and urban analysis, …
Democracy And Bureaucracy Of Smart Place: Coral Gables, Fl And The Role Of Aspirational Content In Local Governance, Ramon Trias
Democracy And Bureaucracy Of Smart Place: Coral Gables, Fl And The Role Of Aspirational Content In Local Governance, Ramon Trias
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores the role aspirational content on democracy and bureaucracy for governance of place in the United States. Place is a fundamental concept for municipal democracy and bureaucracy, as it defines the physical qualities of a community and their effect on people and quality of life. Smart Place would update theory and practices for local governance. Research reviewed process and content for the implementation of place, a gap in public administration theory. Literature review, historical research on 20th century planning and zoning, research on 1920’s best practices on architecture and archival, qualitative findings and quantitative data on Coral …

Miami Urban Future Initiative
With Amazon’s search for its second headquarters or “HQ2” finally over, it’s time for Greater Miami to get back to the business of building its own economy. The fact that Miami was selected as one of 20 finalists out of the 238 cities that applied to the original request for proposals reflects the tremendous strides the region has made in the economic development arena. And, the region’s effort to come together to offer eight potential site locations across the three county mega-region—with the leadership of the Miami-Dade Beacon Council and support from the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance and the Business …

Miami’S Housing Affordability Crisis, Richard Florida, Steven Pedigo, Miami Urban Future Initiative, Florida International University
Miami Urban Future Initiative
"Miami’s downtown skyline is dotted with construction cranes, as endless new condos and apartments are built throughout the city. But the new construction is misleading: Greater Miami—the tri-county metropolitan region spanning MiamiDade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties—faces a severe crisis of housing unaffordability that stems from the dual problem of high housing costs and low wages."

"The world is abuzz with talk of a mobility revolution. This encompasses new modes of transportation, from ride sharing and electric cars to bike sharing, scooters, and even self-driving cars. But how much of that is hype, and how much is reality? In Greater Miami—as in much of rest of the country—the vast majority of people still depend on their cars to get around."

Toward A More Inclusive Region: Inequality And Poverty In Greater Miami, Richard Florida, Steven Pedigo, Miami Urban Future Initiative, Florida International University
Miami Urban Future Initiative
Greater Miami has many things going for it: beautiful weather, a thriving economy, and a unique, international culture. Also known as the Miami metro, the tri-county region that spans Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties is the nation’s eighth-largest metro. With an economic output of $300 billion, it’s about the size of Singapore and Hong Kong. The region is attracting people from the U.S. and abroad and boasts a foreign-born population three times larger than the U.S. average.1 Its renewed downtown skyline is filled with gleaming new high-rise condos and office towers. And its rapidly growing startup ecosystem is one …

Design Of Low Impact Development And Green Infrastructure At Flood Prone Areas In The City Of Miami Beach, Florida, Usa, Noura Alsarawi
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates the effectiveness of Low Impact Development Infrastructure (LIDI) and Green Infrastructure (GI) in reducing flooding resulting from heavy rainfall events and sea-level rise, and in improving stormwater quality in the City of Miami Beach (CMB). InfoSWMM was used to simulate the 5, 10, and 100-year, 24-hour storm events, total suspended solids (TSS), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) loadings, and in evaluating the potential of selected LIDI and GI solutions in North Shore neighborhood.
Post-development results revealed a decrease of 48%, 46%, and 39% in runoff, a decrease of 57%, 60%, and 62% in …

Miami Urban Future Initiative
The Miami metro—which spans Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties—is an aspiring hub for entrepreneurship and innovation. While Miami has long been a breeding ground for small businesses, the economic value of these businesses has historically trailed behind that of leading tech hubs like the San Francisco Bay Area, Austin, Seattle, and Boston-Cambridge. But the tide appears to be turning in Miami’s favor.

A Framework For Assessing Alternative Agro-Ecosystems: Finding Multi-Functional Solutions For Sustainable Urban Landscapes., Thais H. Thiesen Ms.
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Creating sustainable urban landscapes in light of growing population pressures requires interdisciplinary multi-functional solutions. Alternative agro-ecosystems described as food forests, permaculture gardens, and/or edible landscapes among others could offer potential ways to address the social, economic and ecological goals of various stakeholders simultaneously. The present research used a unique rubric, the Permaculture and Agro-ecosystems Sustainability Scorecard (PASS) that combines existing agricultural and landscape sustainability indicators in order to assess alternative agro-ecosystems. The rubric evaluates provisioning, regulating, supporting and cultural ecosystem services such as pollinator presence, biodiversity, pesticides and fertilizer use, carbon sequestration and human interactions. The PASS was used to …
